The Evolution and Development of the Philippine Flag
Our current banner is the compendium of the joint efforts of the revolutionary warlords. The evolution of this flag covered no less than ten evolutionary stages. It was the secret society called "Ang Kataastaasan, Kaga-langgalangan Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan” that pushed the preparation of the first flag of the Philippines. The "Katipunan" as this society was known, had several groups under patriotic warlords who drew their flags and modified those that already existed then. It can be seen, from the different appearances of the flag, that the figure of the flag from the beginning had been a rectangle, while the predominant colors were red, white, and blue although for a moment it was tried to have black in the national flag. The first flag of the Katipunan had a red background with three letters K in white, in the middle serving as the sim-bolo of the secret organization. Later the three letters K. were fixed The letter K that was in the middle was raised and the two K’s were left as it was. The arrangement gave the idea of the figure of a triangle. The white K's of the letters and the red background were retained. The flag was simplified in the third stage by removing the two letters K and leaving a single K in the center as a symbol of the Katipunan. Llanera, a revolutionary warlord known for being very brave, drew for his group a flag on a black background, putting on the right side a blank skull, and below this two white bones crossed. The blank letter K was retained on the left side of the rectangle. Llanera believed that members should always be courageous and valued. The macabre appearance of the skull and the bones on the flag seemed to symbolize courage. The hero Pio del Pilar drew a red flag but placed a white triangle on the left side of the flag by putting a red letter K at each angle of the triangle. In the middle of the triangle, he put a half sun, in white decorating the design with eight rays on top. From Andres Bonifacio came the idea of putting the sun in white a little above the rectangle, surrounding it with an indefinite number of rays. He also retained the three letters K in white on a red background. On August 30, 1896, the Magdalo leaders decided to retain the idea of a sun in the middle. The flag was simplified, putting only eight rays of the sun and the letter K, taken from the ancient Tagalog alphabet, in the middle of the sun. The sun with eight rays and the letter K were blank with a red background. After some time the flag, in stage number eight, was a little merged. The old letter K was replaced with a white smiley face as well. The face had eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Gregorio del Pilar was attracted by the presence of the triangle on the left side of the flag introduced in the fifth stage. The triangle was retained but without decorations, putting it in blue, a color that was influenced by the flag of Cuba. The rest of the rectangle was divided into two equal horizontal parts. The upper part was put in rojo color and the lower part – was in black. This was where the division of our flag into two horizontal parts was introduced. Finally, the leaders of the Naic Conference headed by Aguinaldo decided to adopt the First National Flag. The triangle was retained on the left, the sun with eight rays in the middle representing the first eight provinces that raised arms against Spain in the Philippine Revolution, the three stars that replaced the 3 letters K in other stages represent the three geographical regions of the Philippines that are, Luzon, Mindanao, and Visayas. The three colors on the flag symbolize something; red, the sacrifices of the people in defense of their independence; blue, aspirations for peace and universality and white, purity of the intentions of the Filipinos. The flag is the symbol of the nation. We must honor and respect it. ASPECTO HISTÓRICO DEL HIMNO NACIONAL FILIPINO HISTORICAL ASPECT OF THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL ANTHEM
In 1898, General Aguinaldo returned to the Philippines from Hong Kong, bringing with him the music of a march composed by a Filipino soldier. Aguinaldo's purpose in returning to the Philippines was to resume the revolution against Spain. General Trias informed Agilinaldo that he knew a certain Don Julian Felipe, who was a composer and pianist. Aguinaldo sent Gen. Trias to call Don Julian so that he could play the march and give his opinion about it. After playing the march, Don Julian gave a very favorable opinion of the composition of the soldier. Aguinaldo, however, was not completely satisfied with the impression given by the composer. The leader of the revolutionary forces wanted to have a somewhat more majestic piece that could replace, in an impressive way, the Spanish Royal March. Because of this, Aguinaldo entrusted Don Julian with the task of producing a national anthem that he could officially make his own. The work entrusted to Don Julian resulted in what is now the "Philippine National Anthem." In the process of composing the music for our national hymn. Don Julian made sure that the anthem had melodic reminiscences, although only vaguely, of the Spanish Royal March. The composition of the hymn lasted six days and later, Don Julián went to see Aguinaldo. Mr. Felipe, in the presence of Aguinaldo and other revolutionary leaders, played on the piano, several times, the hymn composed by him. After the audition, Aguinaldo called the military assembled there to deliberate on the composition of Don Julian. Immediately afterward, the military decided to officially adopt the piece, as the "Philippine National Anthem". The anthem adopted was only for instrumental music. As soon as the agreement was made, Aguinaldo instructed General Trias and Don Julian to go to San Francisco de Malabon and rehearse the music band of that town. Aguinaldo wanted such a band to premiere the anthem under the direction of Don Julian himself in Kawit, Cavite, on June 12, 1898. On that day Philippine independence was to be proclaimed and the national flag of the Philippines was to be displayed for the first time. As stated before, the adopted anthem was only instrumental music, and so it stayed for several months. The hymn had no lyrics with which it could be sung. But the lyrics of the anthem did not wait long, because of the young Filipino poet. José Palma wrote it after some time and published it in the newspaper: "La Independencia" the organ of the libertarian movement, on September 3, 1898, with the approval of the leaders of the revolution. The verses applied by Palma to the martial cadences of the anthem express the ardent patriotism and libertarian spirit of the Filipino people. The English translation of the anthem was done much later by Senator Camilo Osias. The Tagalog version also came after the translation of Senator Camilo Osias.
