The sequence of nucleotides within DNA directs the organism to

synthetize some proteins or others, according to the so-called genetic code.
A gene is a fragment of the DNA sequence which determines the structure of
one or various proteins. In order to do so, the double helix of DNA unfolds
revealing the relevant gene, which transmits its sequence to an intermediary
molecule, messenger RNA.
