GRAMMAR. The past unreal conditional

Use the past unreal conditional to describe unreal or untrue conditions

and results.
If I had had a cell phone, I could have called, for directions. (But I
didn’t, so I couldn’t call.)
She wouldn’t have been late if she had checked the map. (But she
didn’t, she was late.)

Gramática. El pasado irreal condicional.

Usamos el pasado irreal condicional para describir condiciones y resultados
irreales o falsos.
Si yo hubiese tenido un celular, yo podría haber llamado para direcciones.
(Pero no tenia, así que no podría llamar)
Ella no habría llegado tarde si ella hubiera chequeado el mapa. (Pero ella no lo
hizo, así que llegó tarde)

Como puedes ver, el pasado irreal condicional se compone de la siguiente

estructura gramatical:
Condicional If +pronombre personal o sustantivo + verbo have en
pasado simple + el verbo principal en pasado participio (en la primera oración),
pronombre personal o sustantivo + el verbo could o would + verbo haber en
presente + verbo principal en pasado participio.

En este caso, la primera oración, la que lleva el condicional if = si, nos

presenta una irrealidad; la segunda oración es el resultado, también irreal, de la
primera. Por ende, traducimos las oraciones así: si alguien hubiera/ hubiese
hecho tal cosa, ese alguien hubiese podido hacer tal cosa. (algo hubiera
sucedido)
 

Be careful! Don’t use would or could in the if clause in the past unreal
conditional.

If I would have had a cell phone, I could have called for directions.

 Aquí la oración pierde sentido.
