Abstract
The modern biotechnology focuses on the use of wild type or modified microorganisms and their products that are beneficial to the
environment and society. One of these applications is the use of the microorganisms in in the removal of aromatic hydrocarbons
(HA). The HA are present in contaminated sites that harm crops. Addition these compounds may be formed during processing and
cooking food.
Currently, studies using pure cultures of anaerobic microorganisms have shown the ability of theses, to remove monoaromatic
hydrocarbons (HMA) and polyaromatics (HPA). Also, these studies have allowed describe genes and enzymes involved in the
degradation of the HMA and HPA. Some of these enzymes are benzyl succinate synthetase, benzoyl CoA ligase and benzoyl CoA
reductasa, which participate in the activation and reduction of aromatic ring respectively. Also, it has been observed the presence
of homologous genes between different microorganisms associated with anaerobic biodegradation. However, there are compounds
that resist the attack of microorganisms and their enzymes. In this paper we collected information on the microorganisms involved
in the degradation of aromatic compounds biodegradation under anaerobic conditions, and the main genes coding for enzymes
most representative involved in the anaerobic degradation of these compounds.
