Abstract
Among the numerous discourse genres, literary forms have been traditionally considered as a
privileged domain for creativity, since artistic discourse exploits more exhaustively the search for
infrequent and original resources in each representational level of language. This paper
describes the requirements that aesthetic procedures impose on reading and writing processes,
considering that literary text has non-cooperative properties that demand differential
operations, more complex than in other types of discourse. It is argued that comprehensive and
productive exposure to literary genres allows the development of alternative processing forms
that lead to a maximum flexibility in symbolic representation. Thus, aesthetic texts function as a
highly specialised mediational instrument that culture provides to promote inventive and
imaginative forms of thinking.
