1. NOUN PHRASES ACTIVITY

Give the English equivalents of these noun phrases.
A. La creencia de que una cultura debe ser juzgada en sus propios términos en
lugar de por las normas y estándares de otras culturas.
B. El sistema de ideas, valores, creencias, normas y costumbres que son
compartidos por la mayoría de los miembros de una sociedad particular.

question survey resembling the one used for the first census.
 D. Imagine a large household composed by eleven free persons, four Indians
and fifteen slaves. How many persons would be counted in the census?
Explain your answer.
E. What is the main idea in the third paragraph? Give an example supporting
it.
F. Define the terms “Quadroon”, “Octoroon” and “Mulatto”.
G. How would you define a man who was four-eighth black and a woman who
was two-eighth black?
H. Why does the text mention “Jim Crow”? (Tip: look up “Jim Crow Laws” in
the web.)
I. Explain the expression “all that apply” in the context of the reading.
J. Draw a table summarizing the information about the persons that
identified themselves as belonging to two races (according to the U.S. 2000
Census). Assign it a title.
K. What is the main idea in the sixth paragraph? Give an example supporting
it.
L. What does the author conclude at the end of the text (seventh paragraph)?

3. RHETORICAL FUNCTIONS ACTIVITY

A. Look for definitions (pages 95 to 97). Identify the term, class and
differences. Say what kind of definitions they are.
B. Look for physical descriptions (characteristics, traits) of symbols and
language (from page 98 on).

4. WRITING ACTIVITY
Use the ideas below to form a single paragraph in English. Use connectives to join
the ideas. (This activity is based on information available in the reading "Individuals
within society", page 97, column 2.)
CULTURAL RELATIVISM
A. Cada aspecto de una cultura debe ser considerado dentro de un contexto
