NUMBERS AND NATIONALITIES

1. NUMBERS IN ENGLISH
Los números son una de las bases de cualquier idioma, además, es de las primeras cosas
que nos enseñan cuando comenzamos en una lengua. Con este documento pretendemos
que aprendan todos los números (tanto cardinales como ordinales).

Empezamos por los más sencillos.

LOS NÚMEROS CARDINALES

Del 1 al 10

1 – One
2 – Two
3 – Three
4 – Four
5 – Five
6 – Six
7 – Seven
8 – Eight
9 – Nine
10 – Ten

Del 10 al 20

Hasta el número 12 tienen que aprenderse los números de memoria, pero a partir del 13
comienzan a ser regulares con algunas excepciones. La fórmula para estos números sería
el número+teen.
10 – Ten
11 – Eleven
12 – Twelve

13 – Thirteen – aquí Three pasa a Thir+…

14 – Fourteen
15 – Fifteen – aquí Five pasa a Fif+…
16 – Sixteen
17 – Seventeen
18 – Eighteen
19 – Nineteen
Como ven, los números en inglés no son muy difíciles. Además, tenemos una buena
noticia y es que a partir del 19 solo nos aprendemos los números redondos (hasta el 100),
es decir, memorizar cómo se dice y escribe 20, 30, 40, 50…

Esto es muy fácil. Solo hay que tener en cuenta algunas excepciones, pero en su mayoría
se forma el número (como hemos visto hasta ahora) + TY.

Números del 20 al 100

20 – Twenty
30 – Thirty
40 – Forty- ¡cuidado! 40 se escribe sin la u (que aparecen en 4 y 14).
50 – Fifty
60 – Sixty
70 – Seventy
80 – Eighty – igual que con el 18, el 80 no dobla la T en su forma escrita.
90 – Ninety
Y para formar los números que quedan en medio deben unir los números redondos –
(números del 1 al 9).
Observen la siguiente tabla:

A partir del cien solo deben combinar los números que ya saben con HUNDRED (esta
palabra indica que estamos hablando de números entre el 100 y 999). Lo vemos a
continuación:

104 – One hundred (and) four.

136 – One hundred (and) thirty-six.

198 – One hundred (and) ninety-eight.

La composición sería igual con los demás números:

220 – Two hundred (and) twenty.

300 – Three hundred.

453 – Four hundred (and) fifty-three.

877 – Eight hundred (and) seventy-seven.

UNA VEZ APRENDAN ESTO, YA LES QUEDA MENOS PARA SABER TODOS LOS NÚMEROS
EN INGLÉS.

La creación de 1,000 es THOUSAND.

2,000 – Two housand.

6,540 – Six thousand, five hundred and forty.

Y la de 1,000,000 es MILLION
1,000,000 – One million.

2,000,000 – Two million.

5,786,000 – Five million, seven hundred eighty-six thousand.

6,543,123- Six million five hundred forty-three thousand one hundred twenty-three.

4,170,916,614 Four billion one hundred seventy million nine hundred sixteen thousand six
hundred fourteen.

En inglés no se utiliza el punto como en español para separar las cifras. A continuación
veamos algunos ejemplos:

1,521 One thousand five hundred twenty-one.

87,675,435,789,754 eighty-seven trillion, six hundred seventy-five billion, four hundred

thirty-five million, seven hundred eighty-nine thousand, seven hundred fifty-four.

LOS NÚMEROS ORDINALES

Una vez aprendidos los números cardinales, vamos con los ordinales.

1st – the first

2nd – the second

3rd – the third

Y los demás números, a partir del tercero, se forman añadiendo al número cardinal TH;
aunque también hay excepciones.

4th – the fourth

5th – the fifth
6th – the sixth

7th- the seventh

8th- the eighth
9th- the ninth
10th- the tenth

11th-the eleventh

12th-the twelfth
13th- the thirteenth

14th- the fourteenth

15th- the fifteenth

16th- the sixteenth

17th- the seventeenth

18th- the eighteenth

19th- the nineteenth

20th- the twentieth

Tenemos buenas noticias y es que a partir de aquí, siempre es la misma combinación.

Primero, segundo y tercero como hemos visto (1st, 2nd y 3rd) y todos los demás con th.
21st the twenty-first, 22nd the twenty-second, 23rd the twenty-third, 24th the twenty-
fourth, 25th the twenty-fifth, 30th the thirtieth, 50th the fiftieth, 60th the
sixtieth, 80th the eightieth, 100th the hundredth, 1,000th the thousandth…

COUNTRIES AND NATIONALITIES

Los gentilicios son los adjetivos que señalan la nacionalidad o procedencia de un objeto,
una persona, una costumbre, etc. En español, las nacionalidades se escriben con
minúscula (ej. argentino, mexicano). Pero en inglés las nacionalidades se escriben con
mayúscula (Argentinian, Colombian, Mexican)

Estas son algunos países y nacionalidades comunes.
