There is y there are son dos estructuras equivalentes a la forma impersonal del
verbo haber en tiempo presente: hay.

Uso del there is. Uso del there are.

There is se utiliza con nombres There are se utiliza con nombres

contables en singular introducidos por contables en plural.

La gran diferencia con el español es que en inglés diferenciamos entre there is en

singular y there are en plural.

Cómo usar there is y there are a la hora de realizar oraciones de manera
afirmativa, negativa e interrogativa.

Afirmativa

Para realizar oraciones afirmativas se hace siguiendo la estructura convencional.

Ejemplos

• There is a chair in my room. / Hay una silla en mi habitación.

• There are a lot of birds in the sky. / Hay muchos pájaros en el cielo.
Negativa

Para hacer la negación, se usa is not / are not, como siempre, según el sustantivo
singular o plural.

Ejemplos

• There is not a church near here. / No hay una iglesia cerca de aqui.
• There are not any shops on this street. / No hay tiendas en esta calle.
Interrogativa

Para hacer la interrogación se alterna la estructura (there is – Is there) teniendo

en cuenta si el sustantivo se encuentra en plural o singular.

Ejemplos

• ¿Are there any shops on this street? / Hay tiendas en esta calle?
• ¿Is there any food in the fridgerator? / Hay comida en el refrigerador?
