El 1 de agosto de 1856 se puso en circulación el timbre con la imagen de Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla,
con lo que inició formalmente la comunicación escrita a través del envío de cartas. La emisión constó de cinco
estampillas diferentes, impresas en color azul, naranja, verde, rojo y lila, con el fin de diferenciar su precio;
medio real, un real, dos reales, cuatro y ocho reales, respectivamente. Los timbres postales se imprimieron en
hojas de sesenta ejemplares para ser recortados con tijera.

El diseño y grabado fueron realizados en una placa de cobre, en una técnica conocida como huecograbado. Se
imprimieron en papel blanco de diverso grosor. Fueron obra de José Villegas, dibujante de la Oficina del Sello de
Estampas e Impresos del Gobierno. En las estampillas el busto de Miguel Hidalgo se enmarca en un óvalo
orlado. En la parte superior tiene la leyenda "Correos Méjico" y al calce su valor facial en reales.

Estos primeros timbres tuvieron valides hasta el 18 de abril de 1861, cuando se puso en circulación una nueva
emisión con siete valores y para su impresión se usó el mismo diseño con la efigie de Miguel Hidalgo.
Previamente en 1856 el Reglamento de la Oficina de Estampas normó la emisión de los timbres postales que
debían de adherirse a la correspondencia.

Un año después al promulgarse la Constitución Política de la República Mexicana, se refrendó que el servicio de
correos es una atribución del Estado. Dos hechos transformaron el concepto de la carta: la invención del sobre en
1830 y la aparición de la estampilla postal.
