CANDY MAN

Candy Man: Main idea
Watch the video once and answer the question.
But one store in Pismo Beach, California, goes beyond the usual taffy and
caramel apples. If “Hotlicks” has its way, Americans will be snacking on
everything from caterpillars and cockroaches to mealworm-covered
apples. Larry Peterman is a candy man on a mission. For more than a
decade he’s been promoting a valuable food source that most Americans
find revolting. In a land of plenty, people resist. Larry knows why. From an
early age, parents teach children to avoid insects.

insectos.
Larry Peterman: In our culture, from the time that we’re really small, we’re
taught to avoid insects. They might bite you, like a mosquito.
Narrator: But kids aren’t the only ones munching on bugs. Around the
world more than 14OO insect species show up on menus. Insect eating, or
entomophagy, is part of healthy diets in Asia, Africa, Australia and Latin
America. This trend is anything but new. Archaeologists have found
evidence of it dating to the earliest humans. Advocates of eating insects
like to note that it’s environmentally sound.Producing a pound of
caterpillar takes a tenth of the resources needed to produce a pound of
beef. And insects brim with vitamins and minerals. But despite all the
benefits, most Americans can’t stomach bugs.

Hi, it’s nice to talk to you. I thought you were still on holiday. Really? The
weather has been hot here and it hasn’t rained for a month. It’s like a drought.
No, I haven’t been anywhere. I’ve had a bad cough . Yep, I’ve been feeling
really rough. And I’ve got lots of work to get through . Yes, I went to the doctor
and I bought the medicine he told me to, but it’s not strong enough . Anyway,
I’ll survive, although it’s not fun!.

This looks like a family picnic. They seem to be related as there are three
generations there. The couple in the middle seem to be the parents. They look
happy and it seems like a warm, sunny day, maybe in England. They all seem
relaxed because they're all laughing. The girl looks like her mother and it
seems as if she's waiting for her granny to pass her something to eat. It looks
as if they haven't started eating yet. The grandfather looks like he’s having a
great time!

This part again has a lot of vocabulary. The rules about comparative and superlatives are very
interesting and useful.

I think describing pictures, checking and clarifying are tools very useful to pair work with
Tandem.
