 THE STAYING PoWER oF SIR RoHAN
I was twenty-five and I had graduated in medicine that
previous spring. It was winter and I was living with my
mother's brother, Dr. Alfred Morris, in Warburton, a small
country town. He had invited me to come and be his
assistant and perhaps take over his practice when he
retired.
At this time I practised very little but I learnt a lot
because I often accompanied my uncle on his professional
visits. I considered this better experience than a
postgraduate course.
1 had an invitation to spend the Christmas holiday with
the Collingwoods, 1 who lived about twelve miles from
Warburton. 1 accepted the invitation happily. On the day
before Christmas 1 went to the stable in the village to hire2
a horse and sleigh for the trip. At the stable 1 met Uncle
Beamish who had come there for the same reason.
«Uncle Beamish», as he was called in the village, did
not appear to have any nephews or nieces. He was an
elderly man who was retired from sorne business - 1 do
not know what. However, he was able to live comfonably
on his income.

Tenía veinticinco años y me había graduado en medici-
na la primavera anterior. Era invierno y vivía con el herma-
no de mi madre, el doctor Alfred Morris, en Warburton,
un p equeño pueblo rural. Él me había invitado a ir allá a
trabajar como ayudante suyo y posiblemente a hacerme
cargo de su actividad cuando se retirara.
Por aquel entonces, yo ejercía muy poco la medicina,
pero aprendí mucho porque, con frecuencia, acompañaba
a mi tío en sus visitas profesionales. Consideraba aquello
como una experiencia mejor que un curso de posgrado.
Recibí una invitación para pasar las vacaciones de
N avidad con los Collingwood, que vivían a unas doce
millas 1 de Warburton. Acepté la invitación con agrado. El
día antes de Navidad fui a la caballeriza del pueblo, para
alquilar un caballo y un trineo para el viaje. En el establo
encontré al tío Beamish, que había ido allá por la misma
razón.
El «tío Beamish», como lo llamaban en el pueblo, no
parecía tener ningún sobrino ni sobrina. Era un hombre
de edad avanzada que estaba retirado de los negocios, no
sé cuáles. No obstante, podía vivir con comodidad con
sus mgresos.

He was a good man, not very cultured, but very
shrewd. He was generous - not with his money - but
he was always willing to lend a hand 3 to anyone who
needed it.
1 liked Uncle Beamish very much. He was a good
storyteller and also listened to my stories. When 1
discovercd that he wanted to hire a horse and slcigh to
go to the house of his married sister, who lived on
Upper Hill turnpike3b, 1 suggested that we hired a sleigh
together. His sister lived on the samc road as the
Collingwoods.
«That would be perfect», said Uncle Beamish. «My
sister's house is less than half a mile after you turn into
the turnpike. You can drop me off4 there and continue to
the Collingwoods' house, which isn't more than three
miles further on.»
The Sn owstorm
We startcd our journey early in the afternoon. The
sleigh was good, but 1 could not say the same about the
horse. He was a big roan, powerful and steady, but he
wasn't very fast. However, Uncle Beamish was satisfied
with him.
«When you go on a journey with a horse you need
"staying power"», he said. «A fast trotter is okay for a
mile or two, but if you have to go into the country in
winter, 1 prefer a horse like this.»

Era un buen hombre, no muy culto, pero muy listo.
Era generoso; no con su dinero, pero siempre estaba dis-
puesto a darle una mano a quien lo necesitara.
A mí me gustaba mucho el tío Beamish. Era muy bue-
no contando historias y además escuchaba las mías. Cuando
me enteré de que quería alquilar un caballo y un trineo para
ir a casa de su hermana casada, que vivía cerca de la barre-
ra del camino de Upper Hill, le sugerí que alquiláramos
juntos un trineo. Su hermana vivía en el mismo camino que
los Collingwood.
-Eso sería perfecto -dijo el tío Beamish-. La casa
de mi hermana está a menos de media milla2, después de
girar hacia el camino de peaje. Me puede dejar allí y seguir
hasta la casa de los Collingwood, que no está a más de tres
millas 3•
La tormenta de nieve
Emprendimos nuestro viaje a primera hora de la tar-
de. El trineo era bueno, pero no podría decir lo mismo
del caballo. Era un ruano4 grande, fuerte y seguro, pero
no era muy veloz. Sin embargo, el tío Beamish estaba satis-
fecho con él.
-Cuando se viaja con un caballo se necesita «resisten-
cia» -dijo-. Uno veloz está bien para una milla5 o dos,
pero si hay que ir al campo en invierno, prefiero un caba-
llo como éste.

I didn't agree5 with him, but we continued our journey
at a slow pace. Suddenly it began to grow dark prematurely
and it started to snow.
«Now», I said, «what we should have is a fast horse,
so that we can reach our destination before the storm.»
«No, doctor, you're wrong», replied Uncle Bcamish.
«What we need is a strong horse that can take us there
whether there is a storm or not. We have that type of
horse. A little snow won't hurt anybody.»
We were very cold, so we turned up 6 the collars of our
coats and continued our journey accompanied by the
"music" of the slowly jingling sleigh bells.
The snow began to fall rapidly and the strong wind
blew directly into our faces. At times my eyes were so full
of snow that I couldn't see the road. Soon everything
around us was white.
«This is the biggest storm of the season», said my
companion, «and it's a good thing that we started our trip
early because if the wind keeps blowing it will be difficult
to travel on this road in a few hours.»
In about half an hour the wind died down 7 and I could
see our surroundings better, although I could not see very
far ahead because of the falling snow.
«I was thinking that it might be a good idea to stop at
Crocker's8 so we can warm ourselves a little», said Uncle
Beamish. «Crocker's house is just half a mile from the
turnpike.»

No estuve de acuerdo con él, pero continuamos nues-
tro viaje a paso lento. De repente, empezó a oscurecer
antes de tiempo y comenzó a nevar.
-Ahora -dije--, lo que deberíamos tener es un caba-
llo rápido, así podríamos llegar a nuestro destino antes de
la tormenta.
-No, doctor, se equivoca -replicó el tío Beamish-.
Lo que necesitamos es un caballo fuerte que pueda llevar-
nos haya tormenta o no. Un poco de nieve no le hace daño
a nadie.
Teníamos mucho frío 1 así que nos subimos el cuello de
los abrigos y continuamos nuestro camino acompañados
por la «música» del lento tintineo de las campanillas del
trineo.
La nieve empezó a caer rápidamente y el fuerte viento
nos golpeaba directamente en nuestras caras. Por momen-
tos, mis ojos estaban tan llenos de nieve que no podía ver
el camino. Pronto, todo lo que nos rodeaba estaba blan-
co.
-Ésta es la tormenta más fuerte de la estación -dijo
mi compañero-, y estuvo bi en que emprendiéramos
nuestro viaje temprano, porque, si sigue soplando el vien-
to, será difícil circular por este camino dentro de pocas
horas.
Una media hora más tarde, el viento amainó y pude
ver mejor los alrededores, aunque no podía ver de lejos a
causa de la nieve que caía.
-Estaba pensando que sería buena idea detenernos en
la casa de Crocker para calentarnos un poco -dijo el tío
Beamish-. La casa de Crocker está justo a media milla6
de la barrera del camino.

«I don't want to stop anywhere», I replied quickly.
«l'm all right.»
Uncle Beamish was silent for a while and then he said:
«l don't want to stop either, but I think it is strange
that we haven't passed Crocker's place yet. We could
hardly miss it, it's so near the road. I'll tell you one thing,
doctor, this horse is slow but he's improving. He's moving
faster than before. This type of horse needs time to warm
up.»
It was true. The big roan was going better, but we still
hadn't reached Crocker's place. Uncle Beamish was
d isappointed because he wanted to be assured that the
greater part of his journey was over.
«We must have passed it when the wind was blowing
so hard», remarked Uncle Beamish.
I did not want to discourage him by saying that I didn't
think we had reached Crocker's.
Again the wind began to blow in our faces, and the
snow fell faster. The violence of the storm, however,
seemed to encourage our horse, and he began to walk
faster and faster.
«Now, that's a horse!» exclaimed Uncle Beamish,
spluttering as the snow entered his mouth. «He's getting
his spirits up just when we need them most. We must have
passed Crocker's a long time ago, so it can't be long before
we reach the turnpike. It's justas well because it's getting
dark.»

-No quiero detenerme en ninguna parte -repliqué
con rapidez-. Así estoy bien.
El tío Beamish permaneció en silencio por un momen-
to y después dijo:
-Yo tampoco quiero parar, pero me parece extraño
que aún no hayamos pasado por la casa de Crocker.
Difícilmente se nos podría pasar por alto, está muy cerca
del camino. Le diré una cosa, doctor, este caballo es len-
to, pero se está superando. Ahora va más rápido que antes.
Estos caballos necesitan tiempo para calentarse.
Era cierto. El gran ruano iba mejor, pero todavía no
habíamos llegado a la casa de Crocker. El tío Beamish esta-
ba decepcionado, porque quería estar seguro de que la
mayor parte de su viaje había terminado.
-Tenemos que haberla pasado cuando el viento sopla-
ba con tanta fuerza -observó el tío Beamish.
Yo no quería desalentado diciéndole que no creía que
hubiéramos llegado a la casa de Crocker.
El viento empezó a soplar de nuevo contra nuestras
caras y la nieve caía con más rapidez. La violencia de la
tormenta, sin embargo, parecía alentar a nuestro caballo,
que empezó a caminar más y más rápido.
-¡Eso es un caballo! -exclamó el tío Beamish reso-
plando a medida que la nieve entraba en su boca-. Se está
animando justo cuando más lo necesitamos. Tenemos que
haber pasado la casa de Crocker hace tiempo, así que no
pasará mucho rato antes de que lleguemos a la barrera del
camino. Menos mal, porque está oscureciendo.

We traveled 9 on and on, but we still did not reach the
turnpike. We had lost a lot of time on the fi rst part of our
journey, although now the horse was walking at a good
pace.
«You can't miss the turnpike», said Uncle Beamish.
«This road doesn't cross it - all you have to do is turn left
and in ten minutes you'll see the lights of my sister's house.
Shc'll be pleased to put you up.» 1º
«That's very kind of you», I said, «but I shall continue.
It's not late and I will be able to reach thc Collingwoods'
housc.»
Wc continued in silence. Snowdrifts 11 had bcgun to
form on the road. Our horse now had to makc a grcat
effort but he walked on bravely.
«"Staying power" is what we want, doctor!» exclaimcd
U ncle Beamish. «A fast trotter wouldn't be ablc to cope
with snowdrifts like these. We chose the right horse, but
I wish he would go a bit faster.»
lt grew darker and darker, but at last wc saw a light
ahead of us.
«That's strange», said Uncle Beamish. «I don't remember
anothcr house so near the road. I'm sure wc must have
passcd Crocker's house. However, if we haven't, I'm in
favor12 of stopping. I'm not afraid of the snowstorm, but I'm
nota fool either. It would be foolish to continuc. It's dark
and thc snowdrifts are getting bigger.»

Perdidos
Seguimos durante un buen rato, pero aún no llegá-
bamos al camino de peaje. Habíamos perdido mucho tiem-
po en la primera parte del viaje, a pesar de que, en ese
momento, el caballo marchaba a buen paso.
-No es posible pasarse de la barrrera -dijo el tío
Beamish-, este camino no la atraviesa; todo lo que tiene
que hacer es girar a la izquierda y en diez minutos verá
las luces de la casa de mi hermana. Ella estará encantada
de alojarlo.
-Es muy amable de su parte -<lije-, pero debo seguir.
No es tarde y podré llegar a casa de los Collingwood.
Continuamos en silencio. Grandes acumulaciones de
nieve habían empezado a formarse en el camino. Para
entonces, nuestro caballo tenía que hacer un gran esfuer-
zo, pero caminaba con determinación.
-¡«Resistencia» es lo que necesitamos, doctor! -ex-
clamó el tío Beamish- . Un caballo veloz no sería capaz
de hacer frente a esta gran acumulación de nieve. Elegimos
el caballo apropiado, pero me gustaría que fuera un poco
más rápido.
Cada vez estaba más oscuro, pero finalmente vimos
una luz delante nuestro.
-Qué extraño -dijo el tío Beamish- no recuerdo
otra casa tan cerca del camino. Estoy seguro de que tene-
mos que haber dejado atrás la casa de Crocker. Sin embar-
go, si no es así, soy partidario de parar. No le temo a la
tormenta de nieve, pero tampoco soy tonto. Sería impru-
dente continuar. Está oscuro y las acumulaciones de nie-
ve son cada vez más grandes.

I did not want to stop but there were three wills in our
party, and one of them belonged to the horse. Before I
could stop ~m, the animal turned suddenly and passed
through a w1de gateway. I pulled on the reins but I could
not restrain him. Finally he stopped of his own accord.
«Well, well!» exclaimed Uncle Bearnish. «Here's a barn
door.»
«What are you going to do?» I asked.
. «I'm g.oing to open the barn door and let the horse go
lil», he satd. «He seems to want to. I don't know if this is
Crocker's place, it doesn't look like it. Well, we'll let the
horse go i~ and then go to the house. We can't go any
further tomght and that's a fact. If this isn't Crocker's I
in:agi?e the people who live here are good Christians a~d
w1ll g1vc us shelter for the night.»
I did not have much time to consider the situation
because Uncle Beamish got out of the sleigh waded
through 13 the snow and opened the barn door. I~stantly,
the horse entered.
«Now, let's find a rope to tie him up with», he said.
«Then we can leave him and go to the house.»
I ha~ a lantern, which I lit quickly and held up.
«Th1s barn looks more like a waggon 14 house», said
Unclc Beamish. «It's definitely not Crocker's barn but
we'll go up to the house anyway.» ' tío Beamish-. Definitivamente no es el establo de

Yo no quería detenerme, pero había tres voluntades en
nuestro grupo y una de ellas pertenecía al caballo. Antes
de que pudiera impedirlo, el animal giró bruscamente y
pasó por ~a gran puerta. Tiré de las riendas, pero no pude
frenarlo. Fmalmente, se detuvo cuando quiso.
-¡Bueno, bueno! -exclamó el tío Beamish-. He aquí
la puerta de un establo.
-¿Qué va a hacer?-pregunté.
-Voy a abrir la puerta del establo y a dejar entrar al
caballo -dijo-. Parece que quiere entrar. No sé si ésta
es la casa de Crocker, no lo parece. Bien, dejaremos entrar
al.caballo y después iremos a la casa. No podemos ir más
leJOS esta noche y eso es un hecho. Si ésta no es la casa de
Crocker, me imagino que los que viven acá serán buenos
cristianos 7 y nos darán refugio por esta noche.
No tuve mucho tiempo para considerar la situación
porque el tío Beamish bajó del trineo, se abrió paso por
entre la nieve y abrió la puerta del establo. El caballo entró
al instante.
-Ahora busquemos una soga para atarlo -dijo-,
después podremos dejarlo y dirigirnos a la casa.
Yo tenía una linterna; la encendí rápidamente y la
levanté.
-Este establo se parece más a una cochera -dijo el
Crocker, pero de todas formas iremos hasta la casa.
Atamos el caballo, le pusimos una manta encima, cerra-
mos la puerta del establo y caminamos lentamente hasta la
puerta trasera de la casa. Pudimos ver la luz que salía de
una de las ventanas de la planta baja.

Mistaken Identity
We were about to knock on the door, when it opened. A
woman, who was obviously a servant, stood in the kitchen.
«Come in», she said. «I heard the sleigh bells. Did you
put your horse in the barn?»
«Yes», replied Uncle Beamish, «and now we would like
to see ... »
«All right», interrupted the woman, moving towards
the other door of the kitchen, «just wait here for a moment.
I'm going to tell her.»
«l don't know this place», said Uncle Beamish, as we
stood by the kitchen stove, «but I expect it belongs to a
widow.». 15
«Why do you think that?" I asked.
«Because the servant said she was going to tell her. If
there was a man in the house, she would have gone to tell
him.»
The servant returned in a few minutes.
«She said that you should take off your wet clothes and
then go into the sitting-room. She'll be down16 in a minute.
I looked at Uncle Beamish, thinking that he should
explain the situation. However, he gave me a wink, and
took off his coat. It was obvious that Uncle Beamish
expected that we would be offered shelter for the night.
«lt's a terrible night», he said to the servant.
«Yes, it is. You may hang17 your coats over those chairs.
It won't matter if they drip onto the stone floor. Now, come
into the sitting-room.»

Confusión de identidades
Estábamos a punto de golpear a la puerta cuando ésta
se abrió. En 1.a cocina había una mujer, que evidentemente
era una criada.
-Pasen -dijo-. Escuché las campanillas del trineo.
¿Han dejado su caballo en el establo?
-Sí-respondió el tío Beamish-, y nos gustaría ver a ...
-Está bien -interrumpió la mujer dirigiéndose a la
otra puerta de la cocina-, esperen acá un momento. Voy
a llamarla.
- No conozco este lugar-dijo el tío Beamish mien-
tras nos colocábamos al lado de la estufa de la cocina- ,
pero supongo que esto pertenece a una viuda.
-¿Por qué piensa eso? - pregunté.
-Porque la criada ha dicho que iba a llamarla. Si
hubiera un hombre en la casa, habría ido a llamarlo.
La criada volvió en pocos minutos.
-Ella dice que deberían quitarse la ropa mojada e ir lue-
go a la sala de estar. Bajará en un momento.
Miré al tío Beamish pensando que él explicaría la situa-
ción. Sin embargo, me guiñó un ojo y se sacó el abrigo.
Era evidente que el tío Beamish esperaba que nos ofrecie-
ran alojamiento para pasar la noche.
-Es una noche horrible -dijo dirigiéndose a la criada.
-Sí, lo es. Pueden ustedes colgar sus abrigos en esas
sillas. No importará si gotean sobre el suelo de piedra.
Ahora, pasen a la sala de estar.

In spite of my disappointment that I wouldn't be able to
reach the Collingwoods' place that night, I was happy to be
in a warm house. I hoped that we would be able to stay the
night there. I could hear the storm beatmg . 18 t he

«Sit down», said the servant. «She w1ll be here m a
minute.»
«lt appears to me», said Uncle Beamish, when we were
left alone, «that guests are expected in this house, probably
to spend Christmas, and we have been mistaken for them.»
«l was thinking the same thing», I replied. «We must
clarify the situation as soon as possible.» . -Yo estaba pensando lo mismo -contesté-.
«Üf course we will, but I can tell you one thmg:
whoever is expected isn't coming. He can't get here.
However, we have to stay here tonight, no matter who
comes or doesn't come. We must be careful when we
speak to the mistress of the house. If she is open-minde~,
we can offer to pay for our lodging and horse feed; but if
she isn't, we can't mention payment, because it will make
her angry. You had better let me explain.»
I was about to reply that I was more than willing to do
this when the door opened and a woman entered - obviously
the mistress of the house. She was tall and thin and past middle
age. She was simply dressed. She had a pale complex_ion and
a defiant look. A pair of dark eyes blazed behmd her
spectacles. 19 She looked at Uncle Beamish.and then her eyes
fixed on me. We both rose2° from our chairs.

A pesar de mi desilusión por no haber podido llegar
hasta la casa de los Collingwood aquella noche, estaba
contento de estar en una casa caliente. Esperaba que pudié-
ramos pasar allá la noche. Podía escuchar cómo la tor-
menta sacudía los cristales de las ventanas.
-Siéntense -dijo la criada-. Ella estará acá en un
momento.

« Youcan sit clown again», the woman said sharply to
me. «l don't want you. Now, sin~ , she continued,
addressing Uncle Beamish, «please come with me.»
Uncle Beamish gave me a look of surprise, but he
immediately followed the old lady out of the room.
I sat in the sitting room for at least ten minutes. I was
very surprised at what the lady had said to me. Suddenly
U ncle Beamish entered the room and closed the door.
«I know what's happened!» he said. «We have been
mistaken for people of the worst kind. We have been mistaken
for doctors.»
«That is only half a mistake»,21 I said, slighdy offended.
«What is the matter, and what can I do?»
«Nothing, that is to say, nothing that you can do
personally. The minute we were out of the room she began
pitching into you. 22 "I suppose that's young Dr. Glover",
she said. I told her it was. Without giving me a chance to
explain she continued to say that she didn't want anything
to do with you. She thinks it is a disgrace to use sick
people to teach medica} students. She had heard about
you and what she had heard she hadn't liked. She kept
talking as she went up the stairs and I followed her. She
opened a door and went into a room. There, in the bed,

El tío Beamish me miró con sorpresa, pero siguió de
inmediato a la anciana y salieron de la habitación.
Permanecí sentado en la sala de estar durante al menos
diez minutos. Estaba muy sorprendido por lo que me
había dicho la señora. De repente, el tío Beamish entró en
la sala y cerró la puerta.

la oportunidad de explicarme, continuó diciendo que no
quería tener nada que ver con usted. Piensa que es una ver-
güenza utilizar gente enferma para enseñar a los estudian-
tes de medicina. Había escuchado hablar de usted y no le
gustó lo que oyó. Siguió hablando mientras subía las esca-
leras y yo la seguía. Abrió una puerta y entró en una habi-
tación. Allí, en la cama, estaba la paciente. Entonces, de

«Your uncle had been sent for and she had mistakcn me
for him. 1 didn't know what to say but 1 began to think very
fast. lt was an awkward business to have to explain things
to that sharp old woman. The fact is, 1 didn't know how to
begin. Besides she didn't give me any ti.me to think. " I think
it's her brain", she said. "Catherine, uncover your head!"

had accompanied me. The patient must be attended to

«Of course the patient has to be attended to» , said
Uncle Beamish, «if not there will be trouble and we'll havc
to leave - storm or no storm. However, if you had hcard
what the old woman said about young doctors, and you
in particular, you'd realise that she isn't going to let you
near the sick woman.
«I can't talk anymore», he continued, «I havc to attend
to the patient. The old woman told Catherine to hold out23
her hand - I could do nothing but take her pulse. At least
1 know how to do that! After that, it seemed natural to
ask the patient to show me her tongue. The mistress of
the house asked me if it was brain fever. I told her that 1
didn't know yet but that I had to go downstairs and get
my medicine case.»

in any part of her body. All these things must be checked
with a brain condition. Then, you must come down in order

«Maintain her condition until morning», interrupted
Uncle Beamish. «Hurry up! Give me the thermometer!»
He left the room quickly, and I sat clown to think about
the situation. I was full of ambition and enthusiasm about

-Mantenerla en su estado hasta la mañana -interrum-
pió el tío Beamish-. ¡Rápido! ¡Deme el termómetro!
Salió rápidamente de la sala y yo me senté a pensar en
la situación. Estaba lleno de ambiciones y entusiasmo por
mi profesión. Habrfa pagado por el privilegio de ocupar
me yo mismo de un caso importante. Hasta entonces siem-
pre había ejercido en un hospital a las órdenes de un médi-
co jefe o acompañando a mi tío y él tomaba todas las deci-
siones. Quizá sería necesario que yo me hiciera cargo del
caso, a pesar de todo lo que había dicho sobre mí la seño-
ra de la casa. Lamenté no haberle preguntado al tío
Beamish cómo había encontrado el pulso y la lengua de
la paciente.
En menos de un cuarto de hora, el tío Beamish volvió.
-Bien-dije-, ¿cuáles son los síntomas?
-Se lo diré ahora -dijo-. No hay apuro. Cuando le
saqué el termómetro de la boca, me dijo que regresara. Lo
dijo susurrando, como si no quisiera que nadie la escu-
chara, aparte de mí.

«If I werc you», interrupted Uncle Beamish, «l wouldn't
try to find anything. I would just give her somcthing to
kccp her from getting worse. If you can do that, I'm surc
that an} good doctor will be able to take oYcr28 tomorrow.»
Without noticing the implication of this, I continued
to think about the case.
« lf 1 could get a drop of blood .. . )) I said.
«No, no!» exclaimed Uncle Beamish. «I'm not going
to do anything like that. What on earth29 would you do
with her blood ?»

just worry you», he said. «I believe that she will hold out3º
without our help at least until the moming. However, you
have to give her sorne medicine - not so much for her
good as for our good. If she's not treated, we will be
discovered. Can't you give her something that won't do
her any harm no matter what she has? If you could mix
up something and add sorne of those benevolent microbes
that doctors talk about, that would be sufficient.»
«The benign bacilli», 1 said. «Unfortunately 1 haven't
got them with me at the moment.»
«If you had», remarked Uncle Beamish, «I would give
sorne to that old woman. 1 think they would be more of a
benefit to her than anybody else. Come on, doctor! I ha ve
to go back31 upstairs to see how the other medicine has
acted - 1 don't mean on the patient, I'm talking about the
old woman. We are dosing her.»
«Well», I said, speaking a little severely. «l am trying
to do my very best for the patient, but l'm afraid 1 cannot
do this without seeing her. Don't you think that you could
tell che old lady that it is absolutely necessary ... ?»

the rurnpike near my sister's house is straight, but there
are two other roads that branch off37 to the right. They
join the turnpike further to the east. Perhaps we got onto
onc of them. In the darkness and with the snowstorm it
wasn't easy to see if we were going straight.»
The horse neighed as we entered the barn.
«l wouldn't be surprised if this horse had once belonged
here», 1 said. «That could have been the reason why, when
he had the chance, he turned and headed straight for3 8 his
old home.»
«You could be right», said Beamish. «That could be
the reason why we didn't pass Crocker's house. But here
we are, and here we have to stay until the morning.»
We found hay and oats and .ª water pump in a comer
of the waggon house. We put the horse in a stable and
made him as comfortable as possible with the help of sorne
old blankets. Then, we returned to the house, bringing
our valises39 with us.
We had supper in the sitting room because there was
a good fire. The servant said that we would have to eat by
ourselves because ccshe" was not coming clown.

cha. Se unen a la barrera más adelante, hacia el este. Es
posible que hayamos tomado uno de ellos. En la oscuri-
dad y con la tormenta de nieve no era fácil ver si íbamos
en línea recta.
El caballo relinchó cuando entramos al establo.
-No me sorprendería que el caballo hubiera pertene-
cido antes a este lugar -dije-. Ése podría ser el motivo
por el que, cuando tuvo la ocasión, giró y se dirigió direc-
tamente hacia esta vieja casa.
-Podría usted tener razón -dijo Beamish-. Ése
pudo haber sido el motivo por el que no pasarnos por la
casa de Crocker. Pero acá estamos y acá tendremos que
quedarnos hasta mañana.
Encontramos heno y avena y una bomba de agua en un
rincón de la cochera. Pusimos el caballo en una caballeri-
za y procuramos que estuviera lo más cómodo posible con
la ayuda de unas viejas mantas. Entonces, regresamos a la

We had a good supper and then the servant accom~anied
us to a room on the ground floor where we were gomg to

dcvelopments. However, as it was getting late and ~ ncle
Beamish was tired, he asked the servant to tell the rmstress
of the house that he was going to make his final visir to

I'm in favor of doing: there's nobody awake yet and I
don't want to stay here and have to explain things to
that old woman. I don't fancy having an argument on
Christmas Day. We've done all that we can here so the
best thing we can do is to get away41 before anybody
gets up.

from here and I know she'll be willing to send for him. Then

«I like that plan», I said. «I don't want to stay here, and
as I am not allowed to see the patient, there is no reason
why I should stay. What we have done more than
compensates for our supper and lodging, so our consciences

I tore a leaf from my notebook and went to the window
where it was barely light enough to see how to write.
«Make it short», said my companion. «I want to leavc
as soon as possible.»
I wrote a ve1y short note, and then, carrying our valises,
we quictly made our way42 to the kitchen.
«This floor creaks!» exclaimed Uncle Beamish. «Get
your overcoat and shoes as quickly as you can, and we'll
leavc the note on this table.»
I had just put on my overcoat when Uncle Beamish let
out an exclamation. I turned round and saw a female figure
entering the kitchen. She was wearing a winter shawl and
was carrying a handbag.
«By George! 42 b» whispered Beamish. «lt's the patient 1»

«Oh, Dr. Glover», she whispered, «I'm so happy to
catch you before you left.»

1 recognized her. She was the reason that 1 had accepted
the invitation to the Collingwoods' house.
«Kitty!» 1 exclaimed. «I mean, Miss Burroughs -what

«I want you and your uncle to take me to the
Collingwoods.» 1 suppose that you are on your way there.
They told me you were coming.

The Escape
In half a minute we had closed the kitchen door and
we were carrying Miss Burroughs to the barn. 1 felt very
agitated. 1 wanted to ask her dozens of questions 46 but 1
didn't have the chance.
Uncle Beamish and 1 returned to the kitchen door for
the valises and then we quickly made preparations for our
departure.
We left Miss Burroughs in the waggon house and went
into the stable.
«I suppose that all this is all right», said Uncle Beamish.
«You seem to know the young woman and 1 imagine that
she is old enough to make her own decisions.»
« Whatever she wants to do is perfectly ali right, that is
for sure. 1 do not understand this matter any more than you
do. However, they are waiting for her at the Collingwoods'
and she obviously wants to go there.»
«Very well», said my companion. «We'll get away first
and we'll leave the explanations for later.»
«Dr. Glover», said Miss Burroughs, as we led the horse
into the waggon house, «don't put the bells on him. Put
them under the seat - as gently as you can. How are we to
get away? The sleigh is only big enough for two people.»

Any friends of mine are friends of my sister. On a
morning like this she'll have buckwheat cakes and
sausages.»
Miss ·Burroughs looked at him with a puzzled
expression but she didn't ask him any questions.
«How are you going to keep yourself warm, Dr.
Glovcr?» she asked.
«Oh, this overcoat will be enough», I replied. «Anyway
as I will stand up, I can't use a blanket, even if we had

In fact, the thought of being alone with Miss Burroughs
after we had left Uncle Beamish at his sister's house made
me feel so radiant that I didn't notice the cold.

Christmas Day. Take this horse blanket that we are sitting
on. We don't need it. You'd better wrap it round 49 you

I got into the sleigh, and I found that I had plenty of room
to stand in front of my companions. I wrapped the blanket
around the lower part of my body. I didn't have a belt to
secure it, but Miss Burroughs kindly offered to secure it
with a long pin that she took from her hat. It is impossible
to describe the exhilaration that I felt as she did this. After
thanking her warmly, I took the reins and we started our
JOUrney.
«lt's very lucky that I thought about the bells», said
Miss Burroughs. «We don't make any noise at all.»
This was true. The horse's hooves descended quietly
into the snow and the sleigh slipped along without a sound.

We did not answer. I did not know how Miss Burroughs

have been red in the face. I gave the horse a powerful whip
and shouted at him to move. Now I didn't need to speak

Uncle Beamish jumped out of the sleigh and took off

be the proudest woman in the country to see such a thing
happen on Christmas Day. The best thing you can do now
is to invite us for breakfast.»
«You'll have to come in», said the old lady, «Or else
stay out there and freeze to death, 59 because that horse
isn 't going to rnove. You can come in and havc

The Doctor Finally Arrives
Uncle Beamish turned the horse towards the barn and
this time Sir Rohan did not object. He told us that he
would attend to the horse and that we should go into the
house. Jane, with a big smile on her face, opened the
kitchen door.
«Merry Christmas to you both!» she said.
We went into the sitting room to wait for Kitty's aunt.
We had thousands of things to say and Kitty explained the
occurrences of the previous night.
She had been visiting her aunt but two days before they
had had an argument about her invitation to the
Collingwoods'. The old lady, for sorne reason, hated this
family and did not want Kitty to go. Her aunt had even
sold her horse to make things more difficult. It was
impossible to travel without a sleigh, and as Kitty was an
orphan and she couldn't contact her guardian to ask for
help, in total despair, she went to bed. She refused to eat
or drink and also to speak.
«After a day and a night», explained Kitty, «aunty got
very frightened and sent for the doctor. I was surprised
when I saw Mr. Beamish and not Dr. Morris. Now tell
me how you arrived here.»
I told her the whole story and she said:
«So you had no idea that you were prescribing for me.
Please tell me what you gave me.»
«l gave you sixty drops of the deepest love in a glass
of water and ten grains of adoration.»
«Nonsense!» said Kitty, blushing, and at that moment
Beamish entered the room.

. El tío ~eamish hizo girar el caballo hacia el establo y,
esta vez, Sir Rohan no se resistió. Nos dijo que él se ocu-
paría del caballo y que nosotros podíamos entrar en la
casa. Jane, con una gran sonrisa en la cara, abrió la puer-
ta de la cocina.
-¡Feliz Navidad a los dos! -dijo.
Entramos en la sala de estar a esperar a la tía de Kitty.
Teníamos miles de cosas que decirnos y Kitty me expli-
có lo sucedido la noche anterior.
Había estado visitando a su tía, pero dos días antes
habían tenido una discusión acerca de la invitación de los
Collingwood. La anciana, por alguna razón, odiaba a esa
familia y no quería que Kitty fuera allá. Su tía incluso había
vendido el caballo para hacer las cosas más difíciles. Era
imposible viajar sin trineo y, como Kitty era huérfana y
no tenía manera de ponerse en contacto con su tutor para
pedirle ayuda, totalmente desesperada se fue a la cama. Se
negó a comer y a beber y también a hablar.
-Pasados un día y una noche -explicó Kitty-, mi
tía se asustó mucho y mandó llamar al médico. Me llevé
una sorpresa cuando vi al señor Beamish y no al doctor
Morris. Ahora decime cómo llegaron hasta aquí.
Le conté toda la historia y ella dijo:
-Así que no tenías ni idea de que me estabas recetan-
do a mí. Por favor, decime qué me diste.
-Te di sesenta gotas del más profundo amor en un
vaso de agua y diez granos de adoración.
-¡Tonterías! -dijo Kitty poniéndose colorada, y en
ese momento Beamish entró en el salón.

both a Merry Christmas», he said.
Breakfast was a strange meal, but a happy one. Beamish
had persuaded Jane to make buckwheat cakes and
sausages. The old lady did not mention anything about
what had happened. She talked to Uncle Beamish about
people in Warburton.
1 was a bit anxious at what to do when breakfast was
finished. But just as we were about to get up from the table
we heard the sound of sleigh bells. The old lady opened the
window.
«Now there's a thing!» she exclaimed. «1 suppose it's
Dr. Morris; he has come a long way to see the patient.
Now who is going to tell him that he has come on a fool's
crran?» 6 º
«Fool's errand!» 1 cried. «Everyone wait here and 1'11
go and tell him the situation.»
1 ran out of the house. My uncle was surprised to sce me.
«l'll get into the sleigh», 1 said. «Let John drive slowly

The story was longer than 1 expected it to be. We must
have driven around for half an hour.
«Well», said my uncle. «I don't know your K.itty, but 1
knew her mother and father. 1 will go in and have a look at
her. If 1 like her, I will cake you to the Collingwoods' and
drop off Uncle Beamish at his sister's.»

el doctor Morris; ha venido desde lejos a ver a la pacien-
te. ¿Ahora, quién va a decirle que ha venido para nada?
-¡Para nada! -grité-. Esperen todos aquí y yo iré a
explicarle la situación.
Salí corriendo de la casa. Mi tío se sorprendió al verme.
-Subiré al trineo -dije-. Deje que John dé vueltas
lentamente alrededor del jardín y yo le contaré por qué
estoy aquí.
La historia resultó más larga de lo que yo esperaba.
Tuvimos que estar dando vueltas durante media hora.
-Bien-dijo mi tío- No conozco a tu Kitty, pero
conocí a su madre y a su padre. Entraré y le echaré un vis-
tazo. Si me gusta, los llevaré a casa de los Collingwood y
dejaré al tío Beamish en casa de su hermana.
