He was a man who throughout his life promoted the study and conservation of nature
in Bolivia, when he was a child he showed curiosity about the nature, animals, and
forests, but despite that, he graduated as an accountant.
After graduating he spent 20 years living in the field, beginning in the activities of
beekeeping. That It is the technique of raising bees to take advantage of their products,
such as honey or wax.
Some of the things that I admire about him are that he was self-taught, activist, researcher,
writer and founder of nature care projects
AUTODIDACTA
In his dedication to know the sources of nectar used by bees, he approached in the
world of flowers and his curiosity led him to know more about of botany and zoology.
He was the first self-taught cruceño to enter in the National Academy of Sciences
received many awards for his work.
Premio a las Ciencias Manuel Vicente Ballivián por la Academia Nacional de Ciencias
DOCENTE
INVESTIGADOR Y ESCRITOR
He was researcher and explorer of the park Amboro and Huanchaca and presented the
project to create the binational park Caparuch, as a cross-border management of
protected areas to join the park with the Brazilian side.
With his research he was able to write many botanical and zoological books on the
Amazonian flora of Bolivia, birds of Bolivia, and one of his most important research on
African bees.
FUNDADOR
He was the creator of the first Botanical Garden of Santa Cruz, being this work buried
by a turbion of the Piraí River; however the professor did not bend, committing himself
immediately in the creation of a new Botanical Garden, of greater scope, in the zone of
Guapilo, for strictly scientific purposes.
The South American Fauna Zoological Park was another of its great contributions to the
city, quickly becoming a center of scientific reference of what the South American
fauna represents.
In this mission that he was passionate about, he established the concept of using
ornamental native species in the urban forest of the city and directed the management
of green areas.
MUERTE
When he was developing research in the Huanchaca National Park, scientists from
Spain hired a plane to get to the place more easily, someone had informed them that
there was an abandoned airstrip very close to where they wanted to go.
On that trip were 4 people, Professor Noel Kempff, the pilot, the guide, and the
Spanish biologist.
The biologist tells that when they arrived in the area, the pilot and the guide went to
see if there were people in the place because they had been told that it was an
abandoned track and from the air they could see a series of roads and accumulated
drums. it was then that the biologist saw that the pilot and the guide returned with two
more people who were pointing at them from behind, they approached and the
biologist indicated that they only came to study the plants and animals. The men
spoke in Portuguese and shot the guide immediately, Professor Noel Kempff tried to
calm them down and they shot him too, then the biologist and the pilot ran towards
the track and heard other shots so the biologist separated and He went into the jungle
until he fell entangled in a lianas. He remained motionless until dawn and then climbed
a hill where he could see that the plane was burned. A few hours later he heard an
engine, he did not know who he was and he saw the Bolivian badge so he approached
and saw that it was other biologists who had gone in search, after they landed the
biologist got up and told them to leave very fast because there had been a disaster.
After his death, Noel Kempff Mercado became an iconic icon of biodiversity
conservation
