Air Pollution:
There are many sources of air pollution. For example, factories emit a lot of smoke into the atmosphere.
This smoke contains carbon monoxide, organic compounds, and chemicals. Power plants (where
electricity is generated) are emitting this harmful smoke too.
Transportation is another big source of air pollution. Cars, trucks, trains, ships, and airplanes use a lot of
gasoline. When this gasoline is burned, it emits a lot of carbon monoxide. The problem is that our
society depends on these vehicles to transport people and goods.
Another big source of air pollution is factory farms. Factory farms raise the animals and animal products
(eggs, milk) that we eat. However, these animals produce a lot of manure. This manure emits hundreds
of harmful gases into the atmosphere.
There are also some natural sources of air pollution. For example, wildfires and volcanic activity emit a
lot of gases into the atmosphere.

Forests cover thirty percent of the world’s land, but each year forest areas the size of Panama are cut
down.
The biggest cause of deforestation is agriculture. Farmers cut down forests to grow more crops and raise
more animals. These crops include soy, palm oil, cocoa, and coffee.
Forests are also being cut down by logging operations. These logging operations use the trees to
produce wood and various paper products. Other causes of deforestation include mining operations and
urbanization.
Deforestation has many negative effects on the environment. Seventy percent of all terrestrial animals
and plants live in forests. When forests are cut down, the species lose their habitat and usually die. Also,
deforestation is driving global warming. Trees absorb greenhouse gases (greenhouse gases make the
planet warm). So as forests are cut down, more of these greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere,
making the planet even warmer.
Factory Farming
There are many problems with factory farms. Factory farms raise animals for their meat, milk, and eggs.
Typical animals include cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and fish. Factory farms keep these animals at high
densities in order to reduce costs. However, because of these high densities, disease spreads very
quickly among the animals. For example, contamination of even one animal can contaminate thousands
of kilos of meat from one farm. Sometimes this contamination is not discovered until humans get sick
from eating the meat.
Another problem with factory farms is the manure. The animals on factory farms produce a lot of
manure – about 350 million tons each year in the United States. This manure is stored in “lagoons”
outside. As it decomposes in these lagoons, the manure emits harmful gases into the atmosphere. Also,
sometimes these lagoons leak and the manure contaminates waterways used by animals and humans.

Plastic Trash
Plastic trash has a lot of negative effects on animals, the environment, and humans. For example, plastic
trash on land releases harmful chemicals into the soil. Sometimes these chemicals contaminate
important water sources in the soil – water sources used by animals and humans. Plastic trash in the
ocean poisons plankton and fish. So, when people consume the fish they are consuming those harmful
chemicals.
Also, many ocean animals get caught in plastic trash. When this happens, they have difficulty swimming
and sometimes die. Every year, one million sea birds and thousands of ocean mammals die because of
plastic trash.
There is so much plastic trash because humans use plastic in a large variety of goods. Plastic is usually
less expensive and more durable than other materials. Plastic takes a very long time to decompose. For
example, a small plastic cup takes fifty years to decompose. Other plastic products even take hundreds
of years to decompose. Sadly, people throw away fifty percent of the plastic they use after just one use.

Wasting Water
Water scarcity affects 2.8 billion people around the world. About 1.2 billion people lack access to clean
drinking water. However, those people who have access to it are wasting it.
The biggest waste of water is bad agricultural practices. For example, flood irrigation wastes a lot of
water and even pollutes waterways with agricultural chemicals. Another problem is that crops which
require a lot of water to grow are being grown in very dry regions. Because these dry regions cannot
water the crops naturally, humans either import the water or use harmful practices like flood irrigation.
Also, people are wasting a lot of water in their homes. For example, people leave the water running

while they brush their teeth and clean the dishes. When people wash their cars with hoses, they waste
liters and liters of water. Long showers are another example – taking showers more than five or ten
minutes long wastes 18 to 38 liters of water.
