Estimados pasajeros:
C uando llegan estas fechas, nuestra compañía adopta un aire más
vacacional. Sin perder los atributos que son consustanciales al
servicio de calidad por el que se nos conoce y que decide a empre-
sarios y ejecutivos a viajar con nosotros, al llegar julio sabemos que
tenemos que prepararnos para atender también a otro tipo de pasa-
jero: el turista.
Haciendo gala de la versatilidad que nos caracteriza para amoldarnos
a las necesidades de nuestros clientes, estos meses de estío
cambiamos nuestro programa, lo hacemos más internacional y
con muchos más destinos de playa.
En la que denominamos subtemporada de agosto, del 20 de julio
al 2 de septiembre, AIR NOSTRUM añade a sus rutas de tempo-
rada nuevas conexiones de carácter más turístico y amplía su
presencia en Francia, Portugal, Marruecos, Alemania, Escocia,
Inglaterra, Austria, Italia, Malta, Croacia y Grecia.
Madrid vuelve a abarcar gran parte de la programación interna-
cional de AIR NOSTRUM. Desde la capital de España se puede
volar a las playas de Madeira gracias a sus vuelos a Funchal;
a Olbia, la puerta de entrada a la refulgente Costa Esmeralda; a
Split, capital de la costa Dálmata; a las islas griegas de Creta y
Corfú; a la singular Malta con sus vestigios de cruzados; a la
exótica Rabat; a la monumental Nápoles; y a las sicilianas Catania
y Palermo.
Barcelona, además de los enlaces habituales, tiene también conexión
directa con Catania, la ciudad marcada por el mayor volcán activo de
Europa, el Etna, y a la mencionada Olbia.
Bilbao y Valencia coinciden en destinos internacionales. Añaden enlaces
con la turística Funchal y con la belleza de la “perla del Adriático” a través
de sus conexiones a Dubrovnik.
En Asturias incorporamos una ruta de temporada al primer destino turís-
tico del mundo y uno de los más familiares, París, a donde también se
puede viajar desde Valladolid en su programación regular.
Nuestras islas también protagonizan la planificación de la subtempo-
rada de agosto. En este caso, las rutas de AIR NOSTRUM desde las islas
Canarias y las islas Baleares cubren un doble cometido. Por un lado
son un enlace natural con la Península que satisface la lógica demanda
nacional de las playas de nuestros archipiélagos a la vez que se rompe
la insularidad ofreciendo a los residentes baleares y canarios un acceso
rápido y cómodo a las principales ciudades de la Península. Porque
una de las grandes virtudes de este programa de verano es que no se
limita a conectar los archipiélagos con Madrid y Barcelona, sino que
se incluyen en el mapa de rutas ciudades de tamaño medio con las
que no habría conexión directa si no fuera por esta aerolínea.
Por otra parte, AIR NOSTRUM conecta las islas con ciudades fran-
cesas que son urbes emisoras de turismo. Así, este año, durante las
semanas centrales del verano nuestra compañía unirá Ibiza con Niza
y Marsella, y Mallorca con Nimes, Niza y Perpiñán. Situación pare-
cida se da con Málaga que queda conectada con Niza.
Confiamos en que esta variada oferta internacional y turística les
ayude a escoger nuestra compañía para el traslado a su lugar de
vacaciones.

DURING THE SUMMER HIGH SEASON
WELCOME ABOARD
Dear Passengers:
T his time of year brings, without a doubt, an undeniable holiday
atmosphere to AIR NOSTRUM. While maintaining the inbuilt
attributes of its famous quality in-flight service, a service that has
proven successful in attracting large numbers of business executives,
in July it begins to prepare for a different type of passenger: the
tourist passenger.
In its efforts to cover the needs of its clients, AIR NOSTRUM has
increased its summer flight network, introducing additional
international and national holiday flight routes and frequencies.
During the summer high season from 20th July to 2nd September,
AIR NOSTRUM will be increasing its holiday flights aimed at
countries such as France, Portugal, Morocco, Germany, Scotland,
England, Austria, Italy, Malta, Croatia and Greece.
The Barajas Airport in Madrid is, once again, the main destination
of the majority of AIR NOSTRUM’s international flights. This
famous airport offers holiday flights to a number of destinations
such as Funchal in Madeira; Olbia, the doorway to the splendid
Emerald Coast, in Sardinia; Split, capital of the magnificent
Dalmatian Coast, in Croatia; the Greek islands of Crete and Corfu;
Malta, home of a variety of ancient remains, some dating back
to the Crusades; Rabat in exotic Morocco; monumental Naples
and, last but not least, Catania and Palermo in the autonomous
region of Sicily.
Barcelona also provides a variety of holiday destinations during
AIR NOSTRUM’s annual summer high season with passengers being
provided with flights to holiday resorts such as Olbia and Catania,
home, by the way, of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano.
Bilbao and Valencia also provide international flights to Funchal in
Madeira and the city of Dubrovnik, also known as the “Pearl of the
Adriatic”, in Croatia.
Meanwhile, Asturias offers flights to what many consider one of the
most popular holiday destinations in the world, Paris, with Valladolid
also providing flights to Paris, although in this case, as part of its
regular flight network.
Finally, the Canary and Balearic Islands also play an important role
in AIR NOSTRUM’s high season flight planning. This Island flight
service not only provides an important link between the Spanish
Peninsular and the Canary and Balearic Islands, covering an
important national market demand for flights to the Islands’
famous tourist resorts, but also provides Island residents with
access to a variety of major Peninsular cities. I would like to add
that AIR NOSTRUM’s high season flight service to the Canary and
Balearic Islands not only provides connecting flights to Madrid
and Barcelona, but also to a variety of smaller Spanish cities
which, if it were not for AIR NOSTRUM’s flight operations, would
not have access to direct flights to the Spanish Peninsular.
The Canary and Balearic flight service also includes flights to
a number of other French cities, connecting Ibiza with Nice
and Marseilles and Majorca with Nimes, Nice and Perpignan.
A flight service between Nice and Malaga is also available.

LOS MONUMENTOS ROMANOS
Construido a finales del siglo I después de Cristo, el anfiteatro (o circo
romano) de Nimes se encuentra entre los más grandes de la Galia romana. Mide
aproximadamente 133 metros de largo y 101 metros de ancho. Su fachada, de
21 metros de altura, está compuesta por dos niveles de 60 arcos cada uno. En el
interior, más de 20.000 espectadores podían asistir a la caza y a los combates de
animales y de gladiadores. Un sistema de pasillos y escaleras permitía que todos
pudieran abandonar rápidamente su asiento. Dispuestos según su clase social,
los espectadores estaban protegidos del sol por un vélum sostenido por cuerdas
enganchadas en astas. Hoy el anfiteatro de Nimes es uno de los mejor conser-
vados del mundo romano.
La Maison Carrée (Casa Cuadrada): Levantada sobre su alta base, este
templo dominaba el foro de la ciudad antigua. Esta vasta plaza, centro de la vida
pública, estaba rodeada de un pórtico cuyas huellas aún pueden verse en la actua-
lidad: se conservan en este lugar algunas bases de las columnas del pórtico.
Construida en el siglo uno de nuestra era, la Maison Carrée (Casa Cuadrada) lleva
este nombre desde el siglo XVI. Efectivamente, en francés antiguo, todo rectángulo
con cuatro ángulos rectos era designado con la palabra carré, cuadrado. Dedicada
a Caius y Lucius César, nietos del Emperador Augusto, la Maison Carrée es el
único templo del mundo antiguo conservado en su totalidad. Seduce por la armonía
de sus proporciones, la elegancia de sus columnas con capiteles corintios y la
finura de su decoración arquitectural.
Templo de Diana: Es el monumento más romántico, pero también el más
enigmático de Nimes. Ciertamente asociado al santuario imperial, no se conoce
su función exacta. En efecto, sus pasillos laterales, que antiguamente llevaban a
un nivel superior, sus diferentes bóvedas de cubierta o los nichos de su gran sala
no forman parte de los elementos constructivos típicos de los templos grecorro-
manos. El origen de su nombre también es un misterio. El edificio se ha conservado
bastante bien ya que fue utilizado como iglesia de un monasterio benedictino entre
los siglos X y XVI.
Torre Magna: Visible desde lejos, señalaba la presencia de la ciudad y del
santuario imperial situado a los pies de la colina en torno a la fuente. Era la torre

THE ROMAN HERITAGE
Built at the end of the 1st century AD, the Nîmes Amphitheatre is one of
the largest in Roman Gaul. It measures about 133m in length and 101m in
width. The façade, 21m high, is made up of 2 levels of 60 arcades each.
Inside, more than 20,000 spectators were able to watch the hunting and
fighting spectacles featuring animals and gladiators.
A system of stairways and passages allowed spectators to reach their seats
and to leave them easily. Positioned according to social status, they were
shaded from the sun by a canopy supported by ropes attached to poles. Today,
Nîmes has one of the best-preserved amphitheatres of the Roman world.
The Maison Carrée (Square House): Raised up on its high podium, this
temple would have dominated the forum of the ancient city. This spacious
square, the centre of public life, was surrounded by a portico, traces of which
can still be seen: some of the bases of the portico columns are preserved at
the site.
Built in the first century AD, the Maison Carrée has had this name since
the 16th century. In fact, in old French, any rectangle with 4 right angles was
described as ‘carré’ or ‘square’. Dedicated to Caius and Lucius Cesar, the
adopted grandsons of the Emperor Augustus, the Maison Carrée is the only
fully-preserved temple of the ancient world. It pleases the eye with its
harmonious proportions, elegant columns with Corinthian capitals and the
finesse of its architectural finish.
The Temple de Diane: This is the most romantic, but also the most
enigmatic, monument in Nîmes. Although we can be certain that it was
associated with the imperial temple, its exact role is not known. Indeed, the
lateral corridors that used to lead to the upper level, the various vaulting and
the niches in the large room are not typical of the construction of Greco-
Roman temples. The origin of its name is also a mystery. The building is
fairly well conserved as it was used as the church of a Benedictine convent
from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries.
The Tour Magne: Visible from a distance, it indicated the presence of
the city and of the Imperial temple located at the foot of the hill around the

más alta y la más prestigiosa del recinto romano. De forma octogonal, tenía en
aquella época tres niveles sobre un zócalo. Hoy el último piso ha desaparecido y su
altura es de aproximadamente 32 metros. Desde su cúspide puede disfrutarse de
una vista extraordinaria de Nimes. Con buen tiempo, se puede ver el Mont Ventoux,
los Alpilles y la planicie del Vistre y la Garrigue. Puede servir como cuadro de
orientación de la Nimes de la época romana.
Los Jardines de la Fuente: En el siglo XVIII se construyó en Nimes, sobre
el santuario de la Antigüedad, recientemente descubierto, uno de los primeros
jardines públicos de Europa. Respetando el plano del antiguo santuario que se
creó hacia fines del siglo I A.C. en torno a la fuente, J-P. Mareschal y G. Dardaihon
diseñaron un jardín a la francesa, decorado con jarrones y estatuas de mármol o de
piedra de Lens. La parte alta del jardín, el Mont Cavalier, no fue plantada hasta el
siglo XIX. Aquí dominan las especies mediterráneas como pinos, cipreses, robles,
boj y laureles siempre verdes.
El Castellum, un vestigio arquitectónico del mundo romano extremadamente
raro (solo se conservan dos en este estado, el de Nimes y el de Pompeya), es el
punto de llegada del acueducto de Nimes, el cual fue construido entre los años 40
y 60 después de C. para llevar a la localidad las aguas del manantial de Eure,
cerca de Uzès, a 50 kilómetros de distancia. Desde este estanque de recepción
circular (5,50 metros de diámetro, 1,40 metros de profundidad) tallado en la roca,
unas canalizaciones de plomo conducían el agua a los monumentos, las fuentes
públicas y los diferentes barrios de la ciudad.

Octagonal in form, it was then composed of 3 levels on top of a pedestal.
Today, the top storey has disappeared and it rises to a height of about 32m.
From the top, the view over Nîmes is remarkable. You can see Mount Ventoux,
the Alpilles, the Vistre floodplain and the Garrigue. A panel shows Nîmes in
the Roman period.
The Jardins de la Fontaine: In the 18th century, one of the greatest
public gardens in Europe was created in Nîmes on the recently discovered
ancient site. Keeping to the plan of the ancient shrine, laid out around the
spring near the end of the 1st century BC, J-P Mareschal and G. Dardaihon
designed a garden in the French style, ornamented with statues and vases
in marble or in white Pierre de Lens. The top part of the garden, the Mont
Cavalier, was planted in the 19th century. Here, Mediterranean species are
predominant - pine, cypress, ilex, boxwood and bay - providing green foliage
throughout the year.
The Castellum: An extremely rare vestige of the Roman world (this is
one of two still in this condition, the other being in Pompeii) the Castellum
is the point of arrival in Nîmes of the 50-kilometre aqueduct built between
40 and 60 AD to bring water from the Eure spring near Uzès. From this
circular tank (5.90 m in diameter, 1.40 m deep) carved into the rock, lead
pipes carried the water to the monuments, the public fountains and the
different parts of the city.

Desde que debutó con la selección española en el año 2000, con tan solo
17 años, hasta ahora, su palmarés no ha parado de llenarse, tanto a título
personal como de grupo. Campeón de Liga de División de Honor 2004,
2005 y 2006, subcampeón en los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín en 2008,
o mejor jugador de la Champions Trophy 2011 son algunos de los galar-
dones que ostenta. “Gugu”, como le llaman en el equipo, nos ha dado la
clave para conseguir una medalla en los próximos Juegos Olímpicos de
Londres este año: mantener la forma física, técnica y mentalmente.
E n Terrassa, donde naciste, se sigue la tradición de regalar un stick
a los bebés recién nacidos por lo que digamos que naciste con un
stick bajo el brazo, ¿por qué está tan ligado este deporte a esta ciudad?
Justo el pasado 2 de junio celebramos los 100 años del primer partido de hockey
en España, que se disputó en Terrassa. Por parte materna mi bisabuelo fue uno de
los responsables de que el hockey llegase a Terrassa. Me siento orgulloso de tener
estas raíces tan deportistas.
¿Familiarmente también tienes antecedentes de jugadores de hockey?
¿Cómo ha ayudado esto a tu carrera?
Tengo cuatro tíos olímpicos, tres por parte de madre y uno por parte de padre.
Para mí han sido un referente. Desde pequeño sabía que iba a ser olímpico, no me
preguntes el porqué, no lo sé. Aunque mi máximo referente fue mi hermano Uri.
Siempre iba a ver sus partidos y pensaba que de mayor quería ser como él.
Tus compañeros y allegados te apodan ‘gugu’, ¿por qué?
Era muy pequeño y solo sabía gatear y en la tele se emitían anuncios con niños
pequeños como yo y mi reacción era de ir gateando hacia el televisor y empezar
a decir “gugu gugu”. Entonces mi padre me gritaba: “¡gugu vuelve aquí!”, y así
empezó todo.
De todos los triunfos que figuran en tu extenso palmarés, ¿cuál
recuerdas con especial emoción?
Esta es una pregunta trampa. Todos los títulos han costado tanto, hoy en día es tan
difícil ganar. Pero voy a decir un triunfo que no sale en mi palmarés. El mayor
triunfo de mi carrera deportiva lo he ganado en el gimnasio. He sufrido tres opera-
ciones de rodilla en los últimos cuatro años y al empezar la recuperación afrontas
un periodo de gimnasio donde la solitud es tu primer obstáculo. Aquí he ganado
una medalla que nunca saldrá en mi palmarés deportivo pero tengo un aprendi-
zaje que lo llevo para toda mi vida.
Since his debut with the Spanish Hockey Team in the year 2000 when
he was only 17-years-old, Santi Freixa’s sporting record has grown on
both a personal and group level. Champion of the First Division in 2004,
2005 and 2006, runner-up in the Peking Olympic Games 2008 and best
player of the Champions Trophy 2011 are just some of his successes.
“Gugu”, as he is known, has some good advice for winning a medal in
the London Olympics: maintain physical, mental and technical levels
during each performance.
T he town in which you were born, Terrassa has a custom of buying a new-
born baby a hockey stick. Why is this sport so popular in Terrassa?
We celebrated, on 2nd June, 2012, the centennial of the first hockey game
played in Spain which took place in Terrassa. My maternal great grandfather was
one of the people responsible for bringing hockey to Terrassa. I am proud of my
sporting roots.
There are other hockey champions in your family. What effect has this had
on your sporting career?
I have four uncles who have competed in the Olympics, three on my mother’s
side and one on my father’s side. They have always been a reference point for
me. Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to compete in the Olympic Games,
don’t ask me why, I don’t know. My brother, Uri, has probably been my greatest
hero. I would go to see him play and think how much I wanted to be like him
when I grew up.
Why does everyone call you “Gugu”?
When I was still crawling, it seems that whenever I saw small children on the
television, I would crawl towards the screen and say “gugu, gugu”. My father
would shout, “Gugu, come here”. That is how I got my nickname.
Which of your many successes stand out most in your mind?
That is a tricky question. They have all been costly because, today, winning
is never easy. In spite of that, I would say that my greatest sporting success
cannot be found on my sporting record. It actually took place in the gym. You
see, I have had to undergo three operations on my knee over the past four
years. The greatest obstacle when recovering from this type of injury is the
loneliness of the gym work. In some ways, I feel I won a medal that cannot be
found listed on my sporting record, but that will, together with what I have
learnt, stay with me for the rest of my life.

¿cómo ves las posibilidades de la selección en estos Juegos de Londres?
Si miramos estos últimos cuatro años, han sido años de cambios y de irregula-
ridad tanto en nuestro juego como en los resultados. Hemos sido capaces de lo
mejor y también de lo peor. Después del último Champions Trophy el equipo tiene
mucha ilusión y confianza en sí mismo. Si conseguimos mantener este nivel de
forma tanto física, técnica como mental se puede esperar mucho de este equipo.
¿Qué supone para ti ser el capitán de la selección española?
A mi forma de ver la cosas, el capitán es una figura del pasado, pero por temas
oficiales aún se mantiene, alguien tiene que llevar el brazalete. En lo único que
he cambiado es que ahora me toca hablar más. Lo demás sigue como antes. Cada
jugador tiene su rol dentro y fuera del equipo. Por ejemplo, dentro el campo juga-
dores como Alex Fábregas o Ramón Alegre cogen la responsabilidad de aspectos
más tácticos, por su posición y experiencia.
¿Cuáles crees que son los rivales a batir?
(Resopla) Todos podría decir. En el hockey masculino no hay un rival flojo. Si tienes
un mal día cualquier equipo te puede pasar la mano por la cara.
¿Qué sientes al haber sido reconocido como el mejor jugador de la
Champions Trophy 2011?
Cuando escuché mi nombre fue un subidón, pero después lo único que pude hacer
es dar las gracias a mis compañeros. A veces me he preguntado para qué sirven
los premios individuales en deportes de equipo. Aún no he encontrado la respuesta.
¿Cómo definirías tu juego?
Soy explosivo, intuitivo y generoso aunque a veces me la juego demasiado. Disfruto
combinando con mis compañeros, para mí los ataques donde los jugadores nos
pasamos la pelota son la esencia de este deporte.
¿Por qué crees que el deporte español está triunfando tanto en los
últimos años?
Si en algo somos diferentes a otros países que nos ganan físicamente es en nuestra
pasión por el deporte. Si alguien disfruta con lo que hace tiene mucho ganado.
¿Cómo es Santi fuera del terreno de juego?
Como todo el mundo. Intento dar sentido a mi vida disfrutando de cada día.
¿Se puede vivir de este deporte?
Solo unos pocos podemos sobrevivir con este deporte. Una de las grandezas de
esta selección es que todos nos sacrificamos para estudiar o trabajar compagi-
nando con el hockey. Si alguien tiene problemas con la gestión del tiempo, le reco-
miendo que se deje asesorar por algún deportista olímpico que estudie o trabaje.
Cuándo algún día se acabe tu carrera profesional, ¿a qué te gustaría
dedicarte?
Mi intención es empezar mi carrera laboral al terminar los Juegos Olímpicos de
Londres. Durante mi carrera deportiva he podido compaginar el deporte con la
universidad. En Ámsterdam estudié un máster en gestión y recursos humanos, por
lo tanto ahora llega el momento de dar el salto a la vida laboral en esta dirección.
Quiero trabajar para mejorar las organizaciones desde mis aprendizajes en el deporte
y mi formación en la universidad. ¡Un reto!
Vuelas frecuentemente en AIR NOSTRUM, ¿qué aspectos destacarías de
la compañía?
Si una cosa tiene AIR NOSTRUM es el trato con el cliente, te sientes muy a gusto.

Your team was runner-up in the Peking Olympic Games in 2008. What chance
do you think you have of winning the London Olympic Games 2012?
If you take a look at the past four years, you will see that there have been a lot
of changes in the team, great irregularity in the games we have played and their
results. We have experienced the best and worst of ourselves. Since the last
Champions Trophy, the team has regained its excitement and confidence. If we
maintain our physical, mental and technical level, I feel we have a lot of potential.
What does it mean to you to be captain of the Spanish Hockey Team?
From my point of view, the team captain is now a figure of the past, a figure
which, for official reasons, has been maintained as somebody has to wear the
armband. The only thing that has changed is that I have to say more. Nothing
else has changed. Each player has a role on and off the field. For example,
players like Alex Fabregas and Ramon Alegre are, because of their position and
experience, take responsibility for the more tactical aspects of our formation.
Who do you consider your main rivals?
(Ufff) I could say all of them. In men’s hockey, there are no weak rivals. If you
are having a bad day, any team has the power to take you down.
How does it feel to have been acknowledged as the best player in the
Champions Trophy 2011?
I got a real buzz when I heard my name announced, but afterwards all I could
think about was thanking my team mates. I have wondered, on more than one
occasion, what the point is of an individual prize in a team game.
How would you describe yourself as a player?
I am explosive, intuitive and generous which sometimes leads to taking too
many risks. I enjoy playing with my team mates, passing the ball during an attack
is the whole point of this sport.
Why do you think Spanish sport has had so much success over the past few
years?
If there is something that singles us out from nationalities that are physically
superior, is our passion for sport. There is a great advantage in loving what
you do.
How would you describe yourself off the playing field?
Just like anybody else, I give my life meaning by enjoying each day as it comes.
Is it possible to make a living at sport?
Only a few of us can make a living at sport. One of the great things about our
team is that we are not afraid to make sacrifices when combining hockey with
studies or work. If anyone has problems with time management, I would suggest
they consult with an Olympic champion who studies or works.
What would you like to do when you retire from professional sport?
I actually plan to start work after the London Olympic Games. I have, over the
past years, combined hockey with university. I took a Masters’ Degree in human
resources and management in Amsterdam. It is time to put into practise what
I have learnt. I want to help companies improve their performance with the
knowledge I have gained on the hockey field and with my university studies. A
fantastic challenge!

Probablemente la primera fiesta de León sea, al menos para los amantes del arte, la contemplación
de los vitrales de la catedral. ¿Cómo dudar que sea un gozo para la vista elevarse hacia el ábside y
recorrer su elipse de vidrios policromados? Si de ese tipo de festejos estéticos quisiéramos escribir,
tendríamos tantos por citar, como de otros referidos fundamentalmente a la participación popular, a
la animación y a la comunicación interpersonal.
Art lovers to Leon will find the contemplation of the stained-glass windows of its magnificent
cathedral an authentic feast for the eyes. What better way to begin a visit to this marvellous
Spanish city than contemplating the sight of the cathedral apse and its ellipse of multi-
coloured windows? The city of Leon is, amongst other things, also famous for its feasts
and festivals, full of popular participation and, of course, entertainment.

The “Cabezadas” and “Cantaderas” festivities form part of Leon’s medieval traditions.
D e esta clase de diversiones, que comprenden también las romerías institucio-
nales y asociativas, religiosas y culturales, tradicionales y de reciente implan-
tación, se han llegado a inventariar más de tres mil en León y su provincia.
Las hay propias de cada una de las cuatro estaciones, otras matizadas por
la Navidad, el Año Nuevo, la Semana Santa o el Carnaval, y una gran mayoría
dedicadas a las patronas y patrones de las localidades correspondientes. Hasta
dieciocho han merecido ser declaradas de Interés Turístico Provincial. Ahora que
las comarcas españolas disponen de un buen entramado de turismo rural, resulta
un buen instante para aprovechar cualquier momento para acercarse a esos
pueblos del interior, buscando la coincidencia con alguna de esas celebraciones
repletas de originalidad, donde la diversión se alía con la historia o la cultura, y
siempre con la gastronomía.
UNA SEMANA SANTA DE INTERÉS INTERNACIONAL
Declarada de Interés Turístico Internacional, es la gran ocasión para los cris-
tianos de recordar la Pasión con sentido penitencial y para todos una excelente
posibilidad de admirar los desfiles –muchas veces al contraste de la acertada ilumi-
nación o de las sombras, de la estrechez de unas calles o de las fachadas nobles–
de las artísticas tallas realizadas por algunos de los mejores imagineros, los
vistosos trajes de los cofrades y de todo el boato que componen los doseles de
los “pasos”, los estandartes y pendones, las cruces de plata, la mantilla española
de las damas, el dramatismo de algunos penitentes, los trajes talares y el esplendor
de los ornamentos sagrados. Las procesiones de León, austeras, solemnes, repi-
cadas por las bandas de cornetas y tambores suscitan admiración y sensibilidad,
siendo una de las más afamadas la del Santo Entierro.
SAN FROILÁN Y LAS FIESTAS DE SAN JUAN Y SAN PEDRO
Celebra la capital la fiesta de su patrono, San Froilán, con diversas manifesta-
ciones, entre las que destaca, el 5 de octubre, el multitudinario y alegre traslado
de la estatua del santo hasta el santuario de la Virgen del Camino, situado a unos
seis kilómetros, cuyo monasterio es una bella muestra del arte contemporáneo
donde se venera a la patrona del Reino de León. Hay que citar también las ferias
de verano en honor a San Juan y San Pedro que permiten disfrutar a los leoneses
y a sus numerosos visitantes, del 20 al 30 de junio, de una larga serie de diver-
siones y celebraciones, desde las de índole folclórica a las corridas de toros o a
los concursos hípicos y desde las veladas en locales tradicionales a los espec-
táculos callejeros de música, danza o teatro. Cabalgatas y fuegos artificiales

T hese feasts and festivals include numerous religious, cultural and
institutional celebrations, some three thousand if we include the entire
province of Leon. Celebrated throughout the four seasons of the year and
during specific periods such as Christmas, New Year, Carnival and Easter
Week, a large number of these popular events are held in honour of different
patron saints. A total of 18 of these patron saint celebrations have actually
been declared of Provincial Tourist Interest. Thanks to the extraordinary
increase in infrastructures and visitors over the past few years, these type
of celebrations, full of culture, entertainment and, of course, excellent traditional
gastronomy, provide visitors with a unique opportunity for experiencing all
types of new sensations.
EASTER OR HOLY WEEK CELEBRATIONS
Declared of International Tourist Interest, Easter or Holy Week in Spain
is a magnificent occasion for Christians to evoke The Passion of Christ and
enjoy the marvellous processions, many of which take place along narrow,
winding streets full of noble ancient buildings. These processions are
normally the highlight of the Holy Week celebrations and comprise a variety
of elements that include richly decorated floats populated by a number of
wooden, polychrome religious figures. Other elements include the famous
“cofradias” (brotherhoods) who normally walk ahead of the “pasos” (floats)
two-abreast, carrying candles and banners, wearing full-length tunics and
distinct headdress, the "antifaz" comprising a tall spire-like hat and a piece
of cloth covering the face. Huge silver crosses, sacred ornaments, typical
Spanish “mantillas” (veil headdresses) and “penitents” (penitents) also make
up an important part of the celebrations. The Leon Holy Week processions
are characterised by their austere solemnity and the mournful sound of
hundreds of bugles and drums.
SAN FROILAN AND SAN JUAN & SAN PEDRO FESTIVITIES
Leon celebrates the festivities of its patron saint, San Froilan, with a
variety of outstanding events. The first of these takes place on 5th October
when the statue of the saint is transferred to the city sanctuary known
as the “Santuario de la Virgin del Camino”, situated some six kilometres
from the city and whose beautiful monastery is a magnificent example of
contemporary art used to venerate the Patrona del Reino de Leon (The
Patroness of the Kingdom of Leon). Also worth mentioning are the summer

promueven más el bullicio, la presencia del pueblo en la calle y la alegre comuni-
cación entre las gentes.
LAS CABEZADAS Y LAS CANTADERAS, EN LA MEJOR TRADICIÓN
Una fiesta, muy particular de León, es la de las Cabezadas, en la que se repite
anualmente una representación de carácter histórico en el patio de la Real Basílica
de San Isidoro, erigida por Fernando I, en el siglo XI, sobre las ruinas de otro
templo anterior que destruyó Almanzor. Quiso el rey el edificio para servir de nueva
tumba a San Isidoro, cuyos restos se trajeron de Sevilla, constituyendo una incom-
parable joya del románico español. Es también panteón de los reyes leoneses
“dormidos” bajo la bóveda que conserva el arte mural más extenso, del siglo XIII,
existente en Europa.
Las Cabezadas recuerda el hecho, tenido por milagroso, de la benéfica lluvia
caída en los campos tras una rogativa al santo en el año 1158. El Ayuntamiento
agradecido entrega cada año a la basílica un cirio de una arroba de peso y dos
hachas de cera. Reunidos para el acto de la entrega en el elegante claustro, el
Cabildo como receptor y las autoridades municipales como oferentes, se inicia
entre ambas corporaciones una pugna verbal sobre si la cera se entrega por volun-
tario agradecimiento –tesis del Concejo– o por obligado alboroque, foro o impuesto
a favor del Cabildo. Como suele suceder en toda discusión, tampoco en ésta se
llega a un acuerdo y, para evitar males mayores, se aplaza hasta el año siguiente,
retirándose el Ayuntamiento muy educadamente, haciendo sus componentes tres
profundas reverencias, que han terminado dando nombre a la fiesta de las Cabe-
zadas.
Otra fiesta muy típica es la de las Cantaderas, que se celebra el domingo ante-
rior al 5 de octubre. Se trata de una tradición que entronca con las vicisitudes histó-
ricas de las culturas cristiana y musulmana. En este caso se conmemora la Batalla
de Clavijo, tras la que fue posible eliminar el “tributo de las cien doncellas” que
los reyes de Asturias y León venían pagando al Califato. Más que recordar la lucha,
la fiesta, a la que se acude con carros y vestidos a la usanza del tiempo rememo-
rado hasta la Plaza del Grano, es un recuerdo de los usos y costumbres de la época.
La polifacética provincia leonesa atesora en sus agraciadas lindes una agenda
lúdico-cultural digna de ser disfrutada con el mayor de los detenimientos, a lo que
ayuda la exquisita y sabrosa gastronomía local y sus afables ciudadanos.

festivals of San Juan and San Pedro celebrated between 20th and 30th
June. This annual celebration includes a variety of typical folklore traditions,
bullfights, equestrian competitions etc., street parties and a large number of
musical, dance and theatrical street performances. Cavalcades and firework
displays attract numerous spectators.
THE “CABEZADAS” AND THE “CANTADERAS”,
One of Leon’s most popular festivities is, without a doubt, the “Cabezadas”
Festival. This includes an annual representation taking place in the patio of
the Real Basilica de San Isidoro, built by Fernando I during 11th century on
the ruins of a previous temple destroyed by Almanzor. This outstanding
basilica was built to house the remains of San Isidoro following their transfer
from Seville. Considered an extraordinary example of Spanish Romanesque
architecture, it also houses the tombs of part of the royal family of Leon who
“sleep” in a vault housing the largest 13th century wall painting in Europe.
The “Cabezadas” Festival is celebrated in honour of the miraculous rain
that fell following a public prayer to the saint in 1158. Out of gratitude, the
Town Hall offers each year a wax candle weighing an “arroba” (a Spanish
measure of weight) and two wax axes. On the last Sunday in April in the
cloister of San Isidoro, the town councillors and church authorities hold a
dialectic battle as to whether the wax offerings are a voluntary offering - as
declared by the Town Council - or whether they are, in fact, an obligatory
offering imposed by the church authorities. A lack of agreement forces the
two parties to postpone the decision for the following year. Three ceremonious
bows are the signal for the discussion to end and the festivities to start.
Finally, on the Sunday prior to 5th October, Leon celebrates the Cantaderas
Festival. This festival commemorates the “Batalla de Clavijo”, an ancient battle
responsible for eliminating the “tributo de las cien doncellas” (One Hundred
Maid Tribute) previously paid by the King of Asturias and the King of Leon
to the ruling Caliph. This colourful festival is basically a reminder of the
costumes and customs of this ancient historical period.
The versatile province of Leon and its friendly inhabitants offer visitors an
impressive cultural agenda accompanied by a wide and varied gastronomy
amongst many other things.

A cudir a León con motivo de cualquiera de estos festejos da ocasión a visitar
las calles de una ciudad que tiene casi 2.000 años de historia. Se puede optar
por callejear sin rumbo fijo dejándose sorprender por los cientos de rincones
curiosos que esperan al forastero. Pero si uno prefiere una lista básica de monu-
mentos que no debe dejar de visitar, le podemos ofrecer algunas propuestas.
Acercarse a la catedral es inexcusable, aunque sólo sea porque se trata de
una de las mejores muestras de templo gótico español y uno de los mayores y
más ilustres conjuntos de vidrieras medievales que existen con espectaculares
efectos de luces y variados matices de tonalidades. Construida sobre los restos
de la antigua iglesia románica y en el lugar donde en tiempos romanos había
unas termas, está inspirada en la catedral de Reims. Con planta de tres naves,
se torna de cinco con una bóveda de crucero. Pensada para acoger a los fieles
locales y a los peregrinos del Camino de Santiago, sus fachadas contienen toda
la típica iconografía gótica en la que se armoniza la intención estética con el afán de
instrucción.
Si se prefiere el románico, San Isidro constituye uno de los conjuntos de este
estilo más importante de España. Aunque guarda gran parte de su hálito románico,
las sucesivas modificaciones y ampliaciones han dejado también huellas de gótico,
renacimiento y barroco hasta constituir una singular síntesis de estilos. Como fue
sede de un afamado taller de orfebrería, conserva muestras de los trabajos de
marfiles, plata y azabaches.
Al margen de los monumentos religiosos, las calles de León también ofrecen
ejemplos ilustres de construcciones civiles que hablan de la pujanza comercial
de la sociedad allí asentada. Uno de los edificios más estilizados es el Palacio de
Botines. Obra de Gaudí de estilo neogótico sus vanos parecen dialogar con las

V isitors attending any of Leon’s numerous festivities will find themselves in
a city with nearly two thousand years of remarkable history. Here, visitors
may opt for strolling around the city aimlessly discovering its numerous
secrets. Another option would be to make up a list of the monuments not
to be missed, some of which we have listed below.
One of Leon’s most important historical monuments is, without a doubt,
the Cathedral of Leon, also known as the House of Light. Considered one of
Spain’s best examples of Gothic style temples, it has one of the largest and
most illustrious collections of medieval stained windows in existence, famous
for both their spectacular colouring and wide variety of light effects. Built on
the remains of an ancient Romanesque style church constructed on a Roman
thermal bath site, it was modelled mainly on the Cathedral of Reims. It boasts
three aisles, a short transept, a five-bay choir, and an ambulatory with radiating
chapels. Built originally for the local congregation and Way of St. James
pilgrims, its façades are decorated with all kinds of typical Gothic iconography
in which aesthetics combine with an eagerness for instruction.
For those who prefer the Romanesque period, the beautiful Basilica of
San Isidro constitutes one of the most important Romanesque style temples
in Spain. Built mostly in the Romanesque style, the basilica has, however, had
major additions which have provided it with a variety of Gothic, Renaissance
and Baroque style features creating a singular synthesis of architectural styles.
As the ancient headquarters of a famous silversmith workshop, it conserves
numerous objects made of ivory, silver and jet.
In addition to its famous religious monuments, Leon is also home of
a variety of illustrious civil buildings which speak of the importance of the

vivienda, los ángulos agudos y los puntiagudos pináculos contrastan con los arcos
lobulados de sus ventanas.
Pero si un edificio ilustra mejor la combinación de la historia con el progreso,
ése es el Musac, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, cuya estruc-
tura arquitectónica les ha valido a sus autores, Emilio Tuñón y Luis Moreno
Mansilla, el premio Mies Van de Rohe de arquitectura contemporánea. El edificio
trata de plantearse como un gran contenedor cultural en el que la sucesión de dife-
rentes espacios expositivos ofrece diferentes alternativas para la instalación de
muestras temporales de diversas naturalezas artísticas.
Los límites de este artículo nos impiden explayarnos en más propuestas pero si
se dispone de tiempo se recomienda ver el Palacio Episcopal, el Torreón de los
Ponce, la Puerta del Castillo, la fuente de San Isidro, o la casa natal de Guzmán el
Bueno, en el conocido como barrio romántico de la ciudad.
Para quien tenga ocasión de desplazarse fuera de la ciudad, también hay otras
recomendaciones.
Ponferrada merece la pena visitarse por un doble motivo, por su casco histó-
rico, con multitud de manifestaciones monumentales, y el castillo templario. Villa-
franca del Bierzo conserva todavía todo el señorío en sus calles y plazas, donde
se sucede el artesonado mudéjar de la iglesia con los sillares de palacios y casas
solariegas. Y por último, Las Médulas. Pocos rincones tan apreciados por quienes
disfrutan con el paisaje como éste. El panorama de colinas rojizas rodeadas del
verde de la frondosa vegetación produce una visión singular de contrastes y juegos
de luz. Su excepcional belleza le ha valido el reconocimiento de Patrimonio de la
Humanidad.
commercial activities of its ancient inhabitants. One of its most famous civil
buildings is, without question, the Palacio de Botines or Casa de los Botines.
Designed by Gaudi, the openings of this Modernist style building with its neo-
Gothic style characteristics seem to have initiated a dialogue with the windows
of the Cathedral. With one floor originally used for the commerce of cloth and
the rest as living quarters, the sharp angles and pointed pinnacles of the
building contrast strongly with the foliated arches of its windows.
The best example, however, of the combination of past and future is the
Contemporary Art Museum of Castilla y Leon (Musac). Its design has won
its architects, Emilio Tuñon and Luis Moreno Mansilla, the famous Mies
Van de Rohe Contemporary Architecture Award. It is a magnificent building,
designed as a huge container of culture equipped with a succession of
exhibition spaces providing a series of alternatives for the installation of
temporary exhibitions.
Although, it would be impossible to describe in detail the numerous
tourist sights that visitors with enough time on their hands could visit here,
we cannot finish without mentioning the Palacio Episcopal, Torreon de los
Ponce, Puerta del Castillo, San Isidro Fountain and home of Guzman el Bueno.
Visitors interested in visiting Leon’s surrounding areas might like to start
off at Ponferrada for two reasons. The first is its Old Town, home of a large
variety of ancient monuments, and the second its magnificent Templar Knight
castle. Also worth a visit is Villafranca del Bierzo with its noble streets and
town squares and where the Mudejar coffering of its church competes with
the ashlar stone of its palaces and ancestral homes. Finally, we would
mention Las Medulas with its extraordinary scenery. Beautiful reddish hills
surrounded by lush greenery produce a unique contrast of light and shadow.
Its exceptional beauty has been acknowledged by the Unesco who has
declared it a World Heritage Site.

Entre los Pirineos y el Mediterráneo, al sur de la región de Languedoc-
Rosellón, los Pirineos Orientales es una tierra afortunada que cuenta con
más de 300 días de sol al año.
L a región dispone de 40 kilómetros de largas playas de fina arena, puertos
pesqueros y deportivos y unos 20 kilómetros de arroyos en los que el agua
corre con impetuosa belleza por entre cauces rocosos.
Los 64 municipios del Parque Natural Regional de los Pirineos Catalanes
abren las puertas de un territorio extraordinariamente oxigenado y soleado, dentro
del cual le esperan reservas naturales, fauna variada, balnearios de aguas calientes
sulfurosas y las fortificaciones militares del famoso Vauban, que forman parte del
Patrimonio Mundial de la Unesco.
Perpiñán, capital del departamento, es una localidad con el corazón en el Sur,
habla con un marcado acento y mira hacia España y Oriente. La histórica presencia
española ha dejado rasgos del pasado catalán. Se trata de una ciudad orgullosa de
su historia y optimista ante el futuro.
En sus alrededores se puede ver una sucesión de viñedos, olivares y jardines
fabulosos.
Una tierra generosa, llena de frutas, verduras, vino (Banyuls, Maury, Muscat de
Rivesaltes, Côtes du Roussillon) y miles de otras riquezas que hacen la vida más
dulce y que convierten la zona en un crisol de colores. Como consecuencia de
todas estas producciones naturales, tiene una tradición culinaria importante en la
que destaca su materia prima.
El patrimonio cultural de la zona goza de una peculiaridad nada habitual.
En un mismo territorio coinciden todas las épocas de la humanidad: desde los
primeros signos de habilidad humana en forma de herramientas prehistóricas,
al orgullo que conllevaron las victorias de Pompeyo Magno, la vía Domitia o las
fortificaciones que mandó construir Vauban o hasta la inspiración y el misticismo
que caracterizaron el arte románico y barroco, sin olvidar la audacia creativa de
los artistas seguidores del fauvismo y cubismo...

The Eastern Pyrenees, situated between the Mediterranean Sea and
Pyrenees Mountain Range, in the southern part of the Region of Languedoc-
Roussillon, is a beautiful area with over 300 days of sun per year.
H ere, visitors will find some 40 kilometres of long golden sandy beaches,
fishing ports, yacht clubs and 20 kilometres of mountain torrents, water
flowing with impetuous beauty along rocky riverbeds.
Meanwhile, the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Nature Park spreads across 64
municipalities, welcoming visitors to an extraordinarily sunny and oxygenated
area, home of nature reserves, all kinds of fauna, spas with warm sulphurous
waters and a group of military fortifications built by the famous French military
engineer, Sebastien Vauban, declared a World Heritage Site by the Unesco.
Perpignan, capital of the Eastern Pyrenees, is a locality with its heart found in
the south, a capital with a heavy accent that looks out towards Spain and the east.
The historical presence of Spain here has left numerous features of its Catalan
past. Perpignan is a city proud of its past, a city that looks forward with optimism.
Surrounded by a wealth of vineyards, it is also home of large numbers of
olive groves and fabulous parks and gardens.
This generous land produces fruit, vegetables, wine (Banyuls, Maury, Muscat
de Rivesaltes, Côtes du Roussillon) and numerous other items that make life
worthwhile, its landscape turned into an amazing crucible of colours. Its abundant
natural resources are responsible for its wide range of mouth-watering gastronomic
specialities made with fresh market produce.
It has a cultural patrimony full of peculiarities. Visitors will find here a
representation of the entire history of Man in just one territory. The first signs
of human settlements stand out in the form of prehistoric tools. Proud of the
ancient victories of Pompeyo Magno that took place here, Perpignan is also
proud of its Via Domitia, the first Roman road built in Gaul, the mysticism and
inspiration of the local Baroque and Romanesque monuments and, of course,
the audacious creativity of Fauvism and Cubism.

L as empresas siempre han estado interesadas en conocer cómo son percibidos
sus productos y servicios por los clientes, qué les ha gustado, qué mejorarían.
Este interés se ha acrecentado ahora porque en la actual dinámica de mercado
el consumidor ha adquirido el rol protagonista, está mucho más informado y se
ha convertido en un prescriptor fundamental puesto que tiende a comunicar sus
experiencias en su círculo, que cada vez amplifican más las nuevas tecnologías.
Hoy en día, para que una empresa sea competitiva debe tener muy en cuenta a
su cliente en cada una de las fases del proceso de producción. Sólo se asegura la
buena acogida del producto si se tiene presente la figura del consumidor.
Alentados con este espíritu, AIR NOSTRUM se ha asociado con el Instituto de
Biomecánica de Valencia en el desarrollo de un proyecto de I+D para su aplicación
al servicio a bordo de la aerolínea. El eje del proyecto se basa en el modelo de
Innovación Orientada a las Personas (IOP), una metodología que coloca a la

C ompanies have always been interested in the feedback provided by
customers with regard to their products and services. What customers
like best, what services they feel could be improved etc. In the light of the
present-day market dynamics, the interest in customer feedback is on the
increase as customers take on a key role in consumption, handling more and
more information, becoming true product leaders by sharing their experiences
with family and friends thanks, above all, to the market’s latest technological
advances.
To be truly competitive, companies must take into account each individual
step of production. Today, the only way to ensure a product’s success is by
taking the figure and opinion of the consumer into account.
Encouraged by current research findings, AIR NOSTRUM signed an
agreement with the Biomechanics Institute of Valencia for the development

grado y de una herramienta informática para gestionar el servicio a bordo desde
la orientación a las personas. Logra así satisfacer la demanda mediante una
adecuación entre las necesidades y demandas de los clientes y los recursos dispo-
nibles de la empresa. Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo un análisis de la calidad del
servicio a bordo de AIR NOSTRUM desde la óptica de sus usuarios, identificando
los elementos que influyen en la percepción de satisfacción.
El análisis de la calidad del servicio a bordo mediante la aplicación de metodo-
logías IOP ha permitido, en una primera fase, identificar los factores emocionales
que forman parte de la percepción de la calidad desde el punto de vista del usuario.
Para recabar la información sobre los elementos más relevantes del servicio, así
como del resultado conjunto, se han utilizado diversas vías. La más novedosa de
ellas es la netnografía, una disciplina heredera de la etnografía y la sociología en
la que se manejan datos provenientes de numerosos individuos que libremente
trasladan sus opiniones a través de blogs, webs y redes sociales. Otra fuente de
información proviene de los tripulantes de cabina de pasajeros de AIR NOSTRUM,
que por su proximidad al usuario del servicio tienen una idea bastante fiel de cómo
lo recibe éste. Finalmente, la ponderación de resultados obtenidos tras la reali-
zación de 400 entrevistas en vuelos de corta duración de la compañía completa la
fase de análisis cuantitativo.
Con el análisis detallado del conjunto de datos se ha podido establecer el grado
de importancia concedida para cada uno de los factores que componen el servicio,
así como también se ha determinado el nivel de satisfacción con cada uno de ellos.
Con todo ello, se puede deducir que la comodidad y la tranquilidad se encuen-
tran entre los factores que determina en mayor medida el grado de satisfacción del
servicio en AIR NOSTRUM. Otros componentes que intervienen en la percepción
de calidad del servicio a bordo tienen que ver con el trato personal, la información
recibida, la estética o la profesionalidad de los tripulantes.
A partir de estos resultados, se han diseñado una herramienta informática que
permite configurar y gestionar el servicio a bordo de forma rápida y satisfactoria. El
desarrollo de algoritmos y procedimientos de guiados para la toma de decisiones
facilita la adopción de decisiones en función de las necesidades de los pasajeros y
ayuda a determinar los requerimientos de recursos personales y materiales precisos
para dar satisfacción a las preferencias de los distintos perfiles de pasajeros.

aviation company’s latest market investigation project is based on a customer-
driven innovation model known in Spanish as the IOP (Innovacion Orientada
a las Personas), a model designed to provide the customer with a double role:
product consumer and reliable source of information.
A study carried out has provided AIR NOSTRUM with the technology and
appropriate software for the management of a customer orientated in-flight
service through which it will be able to cover market demand by providing
balance between its customers’ requirements and demands and the resources
it has available. AIR NOSTRUM has been given the opportunity of analysing
the quality of its in-flight service from a passenger’s point of view, identifying
the elements that provide passengers with the greatest satisfaction.
The analysis carried out on AIR NOSTRUM’s in-flight service through the
application of the above-mentioned customer-driven innovation methodology
has, in the first place, enabled the identification of the emotional factors that
create the perception of quality from a passenger’s point of view. AIR NOSTRUM
has, in order to obtain information with regard to the most important elements
of its in-flight service, implemented a variety of disciplines. One of the most
novel approaches used was, without a doubt, Netnography, a discipline that
combines Ethnology and Sociology and which is responsible for collecting
information freely expressed by individuals through blogs, web pages and
social networks. Another important source of information came from the AIR
NOSTRUM flight cabin staff who, thanks to their first-hand contact with the
passengers, are generally well aware of the level of passenger satisfaction.
The Company completed this quantitative analysis phase by also collecting
information from 400 flight interviews carried out during a variety of short-
distance air flights.
As a result of the above, AIR NOSTRUM has been able to establish, through
the information derived from the detailed analysis of its in-flight service, the
importance and level of customer satisfaction of the different elements that
make up its in-flight service.
In this respect, it has been able to determine that peace and comfort are
two of the most important factors when taking into consideration levels of
passenger satisfaction. Other important factors influencing passengers’
perception of in-flight service quality were aesthetics, flight information and
flight staff professionalism.
The software tool, created from the results of this extensive customer
survey, allows the configuration and efficient management of the Company’s
in-flight service in a fast and efficient manner. The development of algorithms
and guided procedures on decision-making facilitate the adoption of decisions
based on passenger requirements, helping to determine the personal and
material necessities when covering the preferences of the wide range of
passenger profiles.
El Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) es un centro tecnológico que
pretende la mejora de los productos, entornos y servicios. Fundado
en 1976, el instituto es un centro concertado entre el Instituto de la
Mediana y Pequeña Industria Valenciana (IMPIVA) y la Universidad
Politècnica de València (UPV). El IBV combina conocimientos de dife-
rentes ciencias y disciplinas y los aplica a diversos sectores con dos
objetivos: mejorar la calidad de vida y aumentar la competitividad del
tejido empresarial.
Este proyecto elaborado en asociación con AIR NOSTRUM es una
iniciativa de IMPIVA cofinanciado con Fondos Feder, dentro del
programa operativo Feder de la Comunitat Valenciana 2007-2013
en el marco del Programa de Investigación y Desarrollo Tecnológico
para Grandes Empresas 2011.
The Biomechanics Institute of Valencia (Instituto de Biomecanica de
Valencia - IBV) is a technological centre that studies the behaviour of the
human body and its interaction with products, environments and services.
Founded in 1976, the Institute is the result of an agreement between
the Valencian Institute for Small and Medium Companies (IMPIVA) and
the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (UPV). The Biomechanics Institute
of Valencia combines knowledge from different areas and applies the results
to diverse sectors in order to improve competitiveness within the business
sector while, at the same time, increasing well-being and quality of life.
This project, carried out in association with AIR NOSTRUM, is based
on an IMPIVA programme co-financed with Fondos Feder (Feder Funds)
from the Feder de la Comunitat Valenciana Programme 2007-2013 within
the framework of the Investigation and Technological Development for Large
Companies Programme 2011.

Make it real
Si ha soñado alguna vez con un oasis perdido en medio del
océano, un refugio para su mente y un retiro para su cuerpo,
abra los ojos porque lo ha encontrado.
If you were dreaming of a haven lost in the middle of the ocean,
a refuge for your mind, a sanctuary for your body, open your
eyes, you’ve just found it.
Tan sólo 57 kilómetros de largo y 22 kilómetros de ancho definen
este pequeño destino apenas visible en el mapa. Sin embargo es un
gigante gracias a todo lo que ofrece Madeira, isla principal del archi-
piélago que lleva su mismo nombre, donde podemos encontrar
espectáculos como el bosque del Laurisilva.
A 75 kilómetros de la isla de Madeira, se encuentra la isla de
Porto Santo con cálidas aguas azul-turquesa y arenas doradas que
se combinan para formar un refugio de paz y tranquilidad.
Como su propio nombre las define, las Islas Desiertas y Salvajes
se encuentran deshabitadas, siendo por tanto el lugar perfecto para
una expedición donde se puede apreciar la exclusiva fauna y flora
de las islas, únicas en el mundo.
EL JARDÍN DE DIOS
Hablar de Madeira es hablar de naturaleza. El Jardín Botánico de
Dios, Perla del Atlántico o el Edén, son algunos de los nombres que
definen esta isla habitada por una flora exótica, compuesta de espe-
cies traídas de los cuatro rincones del planeta por los navegantes y
visitantes.
Clasificado por la UNESCO como Patrimonio Natural Mundial y
considerado como una reliquia del bosque subtropical, el bosque del
Laurisilva pertenece a lo que fue un extenso bosque que existía en
el sur de Europa, el cual se extendía por la cuenca del Mediterráneo.
Aproveche también para caminar por las levadas –canales de irri-
gación escarbados entre las rocas– una obra de ingeniería que cuenta
con 600 años de historia. Con casi 200 recorridos diferentes para
escoger y con diversos grados de dificultad, las levadas son una
de las formas de apreciar los paisajes únicos de la isla y de llegar a
zonas imposibles de otra acceder de otra forma.

on the map. Grandiose in everything it has to offer, it is on Madeira,

existed in the Tertiary Period in southern Europe and the Mediterranean
basin, the Madeira Laurissilva Forest is currently the largest and most
well conserved area of Laurissilva in the world.

New Audi S series
Audi inicia la comercialización de los nuevos modelos de la familia S,
unos vehículos que combinan a la perfección potencia, dinamismo y
deportividad con extraordinarias aptitudes para el uso cotidiano, y que
cuentan con una apariencia elegante que huye de cualquier ostentación.
L os Audi S6, S6 Avant, S7 Sportback y S8 comparten el extraordinario motor
biturbo v8 de cuatro litros de cilindrada, aunque en el caso de éste último la
potencia llega hasta los 520 caballos, mientras que en el resto es de 420 cv.
En lo que respecta a la transmisión, el S6, el S6 Avant y el S7 Sportback
emplean la caja de cambios S-tronic de siete velocidades, caracterizada por la
extraordinaria velocidad con la que realiza los cambios. Para el S8 se recurre a
una transmisión tiptronic de ocho marchas.
Lo que sí es común a todos los nuevos modelos de la familia S es el uso de
la tracción integral permanente quattro de última generación, que incorpora un
diferencial central autoblocante y un sistema de gestión del par individual para
cada rueda. Si el cliente lo desea, Audi puede complementarla con el diferencial
trasero deportivo, que distribuye activamente las fuerzas entre las ruedas poste-
riores.
Entre el equipamiento de serie de los Audi S6, S6 Avant, S7 Sportback y S8
se cuenta también con la adaptive air suspension sport, una suspensión neumática
que regula de forma constante la dureza de la amortiguación y que tiene una
puesta a punto especialmente deportiva para los modelos S.

Powerful performance, subtle understatement, a sumptuous level
of equipment and a high degree of everyday practicality: All these
attributes come together in the Audi S models. Each model applies
its power to the road with a Quattro permanent all-wheel drive.
T he Audi S6, S6 Avant, S7 Sportback and S8 are all powered by the same
4 litre V8 biturbo engine of four litres of displacement, which in the case of
S8 power goes up to 520 hp, while the rest is in the 420 hp. The engine features
a new cylinder deactivation system that disengages four of the eight cylinders
under part load to maximise fuel efficiency
Meanwhile, the Audi S6, S6 Avant, S7 Sportback are all equipped with a 7-
speed gearbox, the S8 coming with a tiptronic 8-speed gearbox, a new double
clutch robotized transmission that can be coupled with longitudinally mounted
engines. Both gearboxes shift at lightning speed without interrupting traction.
All four models include a Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, which
features a self-locking centre differential and torque vectoring. If desired, Audi
complements the Quattro with the optional sport differential, which actively
distributes the power between the rear wheels.
The Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system is also standard. It influences
numerous features within the car, including the throttle pedal response, the shift
points of the S tronic transmission, the servo boost of the electromechanical
steering, the characteristics of the adaptive air suspension and the sport
differential. The driver can adjust the operation of these systems in five stages.

public for the first time. Situated in the foothills of a rugged sierra
on the southern part of the Mediterranean Levante coast, next to the

E l complejo, con una extensión total de 50.000 metros
cuadrados, propone conocer una región transformada
por la industria minera, ya desde época romana y que vivió
su momento de mayor esplendor a finales del siglo XIX.
En el horizonte sobresalen los vestigios que conforman
el parque; un total de ocho yacimientos mineros rehabi-
litados de finales del siglo XIX que se mimetizan con el
medio y que se han constituido en auténticas señas de
identidad de la zona.
En especial destaca la Mina Agrupa Vicenta, con sus
más de 4.000 metros abierta al público a 80 metros de
profundidad y que impacta al visitante con sus gigantescas
galerías y su fascinante lago subterráneo de aguas rojizas
por efecto de la pirita.
No cabe duda de que el Parque Minero de La Unión
supera su mera condición de referencia arqueológica indus-
trial, alcanzando la categoría de bien cultural y antropoló-
gico; un destino obligado para los que huyen del turismo
convencional y van en busca de experiencias diferentes. Un
viaje que experimentar. Un viaje no typical.

W ith a surface area of 50,000 square meters,

this fascinating theme park offers a view of
a region whose prosperous mining industry not only
transformed the region itself, since roman times
and lived it´s period of greatest splendor in the late
nineteen century.
The remains that form the present-day mining
park stand out against the horizon offering views of
eight different mining areas. The mines that make up
part of this out of the ordinary mining park have, over
the years, become one of La Union’s most emblematic
landmarks.
In particular highlights the Agrupa Vicenta Mine,
with more than 4.000 meters open to the public at
80 meters deep and that impresses visitors with
its huge gallery’s and fascinating underground lake
water reddish effect of pyrite.
The La Unión Mining Park is, without a doubt,
much more than just an industrial archaeological
reference point. It is an important cultural and
anthropological asset, a tourist sight not to be missed
by those looking for something new, for something
different. It is a worthwhile experience. A non-typical
experience.

y puntualidad. El acuerdo se sostiene con las ventajas mutuas que

Iberia, y alimenta el hub de la Terminal 4 de Barajas especialmente
en el horario considerado como ventana de conexión para los vuelos
intercontinentales del Grupo IAG. Todo un caso de éxito de coope-
ración empresarial analizada en la escuela de negocios de la Asocia-
ción Valenciana de Empresarios.
A preguntas de los asistentes al curso, el consejero delegado de
AIR NOSTRUM vaticinó la continuidad en el proceso de lowcosti-
zación del medio radio europeo con el previsible adelgazamiento
del sector ante la coyuntura económica que retrae la demanda y el
mantenimiento de unos elevados precios del crudo.
Bertomeu también se refirió a las ventajas que supone la presencia

LAS EDADES DEL HOMBRE “MONACATUS”,
AL ALCANCE DE TODOS LOS PÚBLICOS
Desde el pasado 30 de mayo, y durante todos los miércoles hasta
la finalización de la exposición en el mes de noviembre, se ofrece
la “Pieza de la Semana”, una iniciativa que pretende hacer llegar
la exposición de la Edades del Hombre “Monacatus” a todos los
públicos.
A través de las redes sociales, y en particular con facebook, se
trata de hacer una visita semanal a la colección, despertar el interés
por la muestra, así como ofrecer detalles y curiosidades de las 138
piezas presentes en la exposición de las Edades del Hombre "Mona-
catus", que se exhibe en el monasterio San Salvador en la población
burgalesa de Oña.
La "Pieza de la Semana", iniciativa que aspira a llegar a los más
de 12.000 seguidores de Facebook a través de Castilla y León es
Vida, ya ha divulgado varias obras. La primera pieza fue "La Oración
en el Huerto", un óleo pintado sobre lienzo de Francisco de Goya en
1819 y cuya procedencia es las Escuelas Pías de España (Madrid).
Pertenece a las obras que se pueden contemplar dentro del primer
capítulo de la exposición Monacatus.
Otra de las obras mostradas es un óleo pintado sobre tabla de
Pedro de Berruguete. Está realizado en 1485 y representa la escena
de "La Anunciación a la Virgen María". La pintura procede de la loca-
lidad palentina de Becerril de Campos y más concretamente de su
espectacular Museo de Arte Sacro en la Iglesia de Santa María.

“The franchise agreement between Iberia and AIR NOSTRUM
has, over the years, become a magnificent example of successful
business collaboration, creating added value and competitive
advantage”. These were the terms used by Carlos Bertomeu,
Chief Executive Officer of AIR NOSTRUM, to describe the working
relationship between AIR NOSTRUM and Iberia during an encounter
with the business owners and executives taking part in the 15x15
course organised by the EDEM Foundation.
Mr. Bertomeu pointed out that in order to achieve AIR
NOSTRUM’s famous Franchise Agreement with Iberia; it had to
demonstrate high levels of quality standards in aircraft maintenance,
in-flight services and punctuality. The agreement between the
airlines is, and remains, sustained by the mutual advantages it
generates. The flight routes operated by AIR NOSTRUM do not
conflict with Iberia’s flight routes. In fact, they are designed to
complement Iberia’s flight network, providing passageway support
to the entire Iberia Group flight network, especially during the Iberia
window for connecting flights timetable. This successful business
alliance is being used as a case study at the Valencia Entrepreneur
Association’s business school.
In reply to questions from the participants, the Chief Executive
of AIR NOSTRUM forecasted that the low cost process affecting
European aviation will continue with a foreseeable sector reduction
due to the present economic situation and subsequent decrease
in market demand along with the constantly rising cost of fuel.

THE AGES OF MAN “MONACATUS” WITHIN
THE REACH OF A WIDE RANGE OF PUBLIC
The “Pieza de la Semana” (Piece of the Week), initiative aimed
at bringing the Ages of Man “Monacatus” Exhibition within the
reach of a wide range of public, will be on show every Wednesday
until the exhibition ends in November, 2012.
The aim of the organisers of this magnificent exhibition is to
provide, with the help of social networks such as Facebook, a weekly
online visit to the Ages of Man “Monacatus” Exhibition as a way of
increasing public interest. Online visitors will be offered detailed
information and anecdotes concerning this amazing exhibition
presently housed in the Monastery of San Salvador in Oña (Burgos).
The Ages of Man “Monacatus” Exhibition’s “Piece of the Week”
initiative is aimed at Castilla y Leon’s approximately 12,000 “Castilla
y Leon es Vida” Facebook fans. The first of the pieces already
presented was Francisco de Goya’s "La Oracion en el Huerto" (Prayer
in the Olive Grove), an oil painting dating back to 1819 on loan
from the Escuelas Pias de España in Madrid. Visitors will find this

Exhibition.

L a misma nube que cubrió Pompeya de ceniza y la mantuvo en silencio durante
casi mil setecientos años cubrirá la mente del viajero, convirtiendo las sensa-
ciones que transmiten sus piedras en un recuerdo imborrable, casi obsesivo, que
te convierte en uno más de los dos mil habitantes que llegó a tener esta bulliciosa
ciudad levantada junto a las faldas del Vesubio, la referencia. Un volcán que
un día convirtió sus alrededores en un fértil paraje, y otro se cobró con creces
la cosecha cubriéndolo de cenizas. Plinio el joven fue testigo de la tragedia. En
una carta a Tácito, en la que comunicaba la muerte
de su tío, Plinio el Viejo, lo describe así: “Desde el
monte Vesubio por muchos lugares resplandecían
llamaradas anchísimas y elevadas deflagraciones,
cuyo resplandor se acentuaba por las tinieblas de
la noche”.
A las ruinas de Pompeya se accede por la
Puerta Marina, en la que se encontraba en su día el
puerto fluvial, en la desembocadura del río Sarno.
Nada más atravesarla, ascendiendo suavemente
por la via della Marina, pisando ya sus piedras y
flanqueados por los primeros edificios, empezamos
a saborear los primeros tragos de historia. Es por la
mañana, temprano, y te encuentras en el foro, junto
a los restos del templo de Apolo, de la Basílica.
Y un poco más allá el Macellum –el mercado en
el que se vendían los alimentos– y casi te puedes
imaginar los puestos de pescado. Pero las sensa-
ciones no han hecho más que empezar. Una vez
que pisas las baldosas de piedra de la via della
Abbondanza, las fachadas, las tiendas, las tahonas,
las tabernas que componen la calle te hacen volver
dos siglos atrás, respirarlos. Ahí están los mostra-
dores de ladrillo con sus huecos para las bebidas
y los alimentos; los bares en los que se ofrecía
comida y bebidas o se alquilaban “piezas” a los
visitantes, sobre todo comerciantes; los tintes, con
sus pilas aún preparadas para teñir los tejidos...
Pero hay que saborear despacio cada detalle. Quedan aún en algunas fachadas las
típicas pintadas electorales de la época como “Por favor, vota para edil a Popidio”;
incluso en alguna de las piedras del suelo se puede observar un falo esculpido,
que indicaba una casa de citas.
La simbiosis con la ciudad es mayor cuantas más horas llevas en ella. Las
casas reconstruidas abiertas, con sus vestíbulos, sus atrios, sus jardines, sus
salones, las estancias y sobre todo sus magníficos frescos. Sus termas, teatros,
anfiteatro, el cuartel de los gladiadores, el lupanar, con sus estancias y frescos
eróticos. Y sobre todo, los paseos al atardecer por sus callejuelas, por las tumbas
diseminadas junto a las murallas de la Puerta de Vesubio, con sus zonas para
descansar. Es revivir la historia. Un sueño hecho realidad al que siempre deseas
regresar.

T he same cloud that covered Popeii in ash, silencing it for nearly 1,700
years, will cloud your mind when visiting this legendary historical spot,
turning the sensations conveyed by its ancient stones into a lasting memory,
almost obsessive, as if you were one of the two thousand inhabitants that
once inhabited this bustling city built on the foothills of the Vesuvius volcano.
After turning the surrounding areas into a fertile land, Vesuvius decided
to charge an unexpected toll, covering the harvest with ash. Pliny the Younger,
witness to this tragedy, wrote a letter to Tacitus
informing him with regard to the death of his
uncle, Pliny the Older. “Large explosions could
be seen coming from Mount Vesuvius the glow
produced accentuated by the darkness of the
night”, he wrote.
The Marine Gate, located on the ancient site of
the Pompeii river port on the Sarno River Estuary,
is the main entrance to the present-day ruins of
Pompeii. As you make your way up the Via della
Marina, flanked by ancient buildings, following the
ancient flagstones, you will experience your first
bitter taste of history. It is early morning and you
are contemplating the Basilica located at the
southwest end of the Forum close to the remains
of the Temple of Apollo. A little further along stands
the Macellum - the food market - evoking images
of ancient fish stands. You become immersed
in a tidal wave of sensations that has probably
only just begun. As you make your way along the
Via della Abbondanza, you will find yourself face
to face with a variety of building façades, shops,
bakeries and inns, amongst others, that will take
you back centuries, we would suggest you breathe
deeply. Brick counters with cubby holes once used
to display food and drink; inns that once offered
meals and drinks or rented “pieces” to travellers,
the majority merchants and all kinds of dyes along
with the areas used to dye the fabric. We would recommend that you savour
each small detail. You will also find façades with electoral messages such as
“Please, vote for Councillor Popidio” and even a phallus sculpted in stone
indicating a brothel.
The longer you stay, the more symbiotic the city seems to become.
Reconstructed houses with their halls, atriums, gardens, living rooms, bedrooms
and wonderful selection of magnificent frescoes along with the ruins of public
baths, theatres, amphitheatres, the House of the Gladiators and a brothel with
its private rooms and erotic frescoes. An afternoon stroll through Pompeii’s
ancient narrow streets, amongst the tombs spread along the walls of the
Vesuvius Gate, is an impressive way to relive history, a dream come true that
we are sure you will want to repeat over and over again.
