1 BARRIO DE LA VILLA 1 LA VILLA NEIGHBOURHOOD
Junto con la plaza de la Iglesia y el
Castillo, formaba la almedina árabe.
Se dibuja a partir de irregularidades
del terreno, formando calles
estrechas y recoletas, casas a
distinto nivel y albarradillas. Las
huellas más patentes del pasado
árabe pueden hallarse en la Torre
del Pan, antigua construcción
musulmana que funcionó como
tahona, o la Torre de los Olivillos.
2 CASTILLO
Construido a finales del siglo XII,
formaba parte del sistema nazarí
de Granada. Se sitúa a 623 metros
sobre el nivel del mar, siendo la cota
más alta de la localidad. Su posición
estratégica permitía divisar la línea
fronteriza de castillos que separaba
las Españas Musulmana y Cristiana.
Su planta irregular está adaptada al
alto del risco en el que se asienta.
3 LA CILLA
En este antiguo depósito para
diexmos asentado sobre el paseo de
ronda de las murallas se encuentra
la Oficina Municipal de Turismo y el
Museo la Frontera y los Castillos. El
Museo presenta una evolución de la
Frontera Medieval en la Península
Ibérica, centrándose en la conquista
de Olvera. Presenta mediante
recursos didácticos y escenográficos
los rasgos esenciales de la vida en la
frontera.
6 IGLESIA PARROQUIAL
NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA
ENCARNACIÓN
Concluida en 1841, de estilo
neoclásico, esta monumental iglesia
fue construida sobre la antigua
iglesia mayor de estilo gótico-mu-
déjar, de lla que todavía se
conserva su ábside. Está situada en
la Plaza de la Iglesia, al igual que el
Castillo, y es el principal templo de
culto religioso de Olvera.
7 CEMENTERIO PARROQUIAL
Lugar de enterramiento desde hace
siglos, protegido por la fortaleza
medieval y los riscos sobre los que
se asienta el Castillo. Desde él
pueden contemplarse unas vistas
panorámicas de toda la comarca.

9 PEÑON DEL SAGRADO
The castle, the Plaza de la Iglesia,
(where there was once a mosque) and
the area known as La Villa made up
the old Arab town. La Villa is today a
traditional and picturesque area of
narrow, stone-paved streets with steps
and little ramps leading to small white
houses on different levels. One
remnant of Arab times is the Torre del
Pan, a tower which was part of the
Muslim town’s defensive walls and
which was later used as a tahona, an
Arab bread oven.
2 THE CASTLE
The castle was built at the end of
the 12th Century and formed part of
the defences of the Nasrid kingdom
of Granada. At 623 metres above
sea level it is the highest point in the
locality. Its strategic position allowed
a view of the castles along the
frontier that separated Muslim and
Christian Spain. Its irregular
foundations are adapted to the
craggy cliff on which it sits.
3 LA CILLA
This historic building, which was
originally a granary, houses the
Tourist Office and a Museum. In the
museum there is a permanent
exhibition with information panels
and exhibits relating to the frontier
between the Christian and Muslim
kingdoms, the castle, the growth of
Olvera as a town, and the everyday
life of the area in past centuries.
4 THE CHURCH
OF NUESTRA SEÑORA DE
LA ENCARNACIÓN
This large neo-classical church, built
in 1841, is located on the Plaza de la
Iglesia, close to the Castle. It was
built on the site of an earlier, gothic
church, the apse of which still
survives. It is the main religious
building of Olvera.
7 PARISH CEMETERY
It has been a place of burial for
centuries, protected by the medieval
fortress and the cliffs on which the
castle sits. From there you can see
panoramic views of the whole
region.
9 PLAZA DE ANDALUCÍA
CORAZÓN
Se trata de un jardín colgante que
desde hace siglos ha supuesto un
espacio de recreo para la ciudadanía
olvereña. Cuenta con abundante
vegetación y el acceso se realiza
mediante escaleras dispuestas en
pequeñas terrazas. El monumento que
corona esta peña es la Estatua del
Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, con
brazos extendidos. La cima ofrece
además una vista panorámica que
puede ser contemplada desde un
balcón colgado al vacío.
11 AYUNTAMIENTO
El primer edificio que se
contruyó en este lugar para ser
destinado a ayuntamiento data
de 1783. Sufrió varias modifica-
ciones hasta que ya en el siglo
XX se derribó por completo y el
edificio actual abrió sus puertas
en 1968. Está situado en la Plaza
del Ayuntamiento 1, teléfono 956
13 00 11. El horario de apertura
es de 7,30 a 15,00 horas.
12 VÍA VERDE DE LA SIERRA
Transita por el antiguo trazado
ferroviario Jerez-Almargen. Se
encuentran transitables 36 Km
desde Olvera a Puerto Serrano. A lo
largo de su recorrido, podemos
encontrarnos la Reserva Natural
Peñón de Zaframagón, donde habita
la mayor colonia de buitres leonados
de Andalucía y una de las mayores

13 SANTUARIO DE LOS
REMEDIOS
Está situado a 2km del núcleo de
población y allí se venera a la Virgen
de los Remedios, patrona de Olvera,
coronada canónicamente en 1956.
En sus alrededores se celebra la
romería del Lunes de Quasimodo, el
segundo lunes tras la Resurrección.
14 LAVADERO DE PINO
Lavadero público cuya utilización se
centró sobre todo entre los años 1685
y 1750, aunque su uso se prolongó
hasta mediados del siglo XX. Al
lavadero se accede a través de un
patio. A la izquierda se sitúa la zona
por donde entraba el agua y a la
derecha está el desagüe, situándose a
lo largo la pileta donde se lavaba.
GARDENS
This is a hanging garden that has,
for centuries, been a recreational
space for the citizens of Olvera.
Steps leading up through ivy-cove-
red rock and small terraces planted
with trees, shrubs and flowers take
you to a statue of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus. The panoramic views from
this high point can, on one side, be
admired from a balcony suspended
out over a sheer drop.
11 THE TOWN HALL
The first town hall was built on this
little square in 1783. Various changes
were made to the building until in the
20th century it was demolished. The
current town hall opened its doors in
1968 and is located on the plaza del
ayuntamiento. Phone number

15.00, monday to friday.
12 VÍA VERDE DE LA SIERRA
This award-winning greenway
follows the old jerez-almargen
railway for 36 kilometres between
olvera and puerto serrano. Along the
way is the peñón de zaframagón
nature reserve which is home to
andalucia´s largest colony of griffon
vultures. More information can be

13 SANTUARIO DE LOS
REMEDIOS
This pretty little chapel, which is
dedicated to the Virgin of the Remedies,
is 2 kilometres from the centre of
Olvera. Here on Quasimodo Monday, the
second Monday after Easter Sunday,
the whole town takes a day out to visit
the Virgin in her shrine and picnic
among the olive trees that surround it.
14 LAVADERO DE PINO
This little whitewashed building, which
is tucked away near the Santuario de
los Remedios, is where the women of
Olvera came to do their laundry. The
place used to be fed with an
abundant supply of spring water, but
the trough through which it flowed
and where the clothes were washed
is so low that washing was done
kneeling down. The wash house was
mostly used between 1685 and 1750,
but even into the mid-20th Century
some women were still walking out
from Olvera to do their washing here.
