Abstract: The objective of the research is to improve the quality and quantity of sleep hours, in
people who doesn’t have a good or complete sleep cycle, through the use of sleep hygiene
strategies. The strategies range from desirable and present conducts and habits, to modifications
of the space destined to sleep. Twenty-four people, of legal age, with sleeping problems, were the
participating subjects in the study. Only the half of the participants were offered a 14 sleep
hygiene strategies, these, in order to check if there was a significant difference in both groups. To
check the results, the Pittsburg Quality of Sleep questionnaire was applied, before and after,
strategies have been used or not. Therefore, according to our results, which were significant, to
improve the quality of sleep, certain habits of daily life should be improved or implemented.
Key words: quality, sleep cylce, leep hygiene strategies, conducts, habits.
Department of

Department of Health and Human Services, 2011) :

Department of

Department of Health and Human Services, 2011).

Participantes

Extended Summary
Introduction
Sleep is a physiological process of vital importance for the integral health of human beings.
Thanks to research studies about sleep made in recent decades, it is known that sleep has different
stages that run through the night in predictable cycles. The brain and body functions remain
active during sleep and each stage is linked to a specific type of brain wave in humans (U.S.
The characteristics of sleep can change in different species and animals, some of the
characteristics that are associated with sleep in humans are (Carrillo, Ramírez, & Magaña, 2013):
11
4) It is usually presented with a circadian periodicity (daily)
On the other hand, there are several theories about sleep functions, such as (Carrillo, Ramírez, &
Magaña, 2013):
4. Thermal regulation
6. Synaptic homeostasis
7. Immunological activation
8. Memory consolidation
Sleep is divided into two basic types (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2011):
During REM sleep, eyes move quickly in different directions even though your eyelids are
closed. Breathing, heart rate and pressure become faster. Dreams occur at this stage where the
muscles of the arms and legs are temporarily inhibited so that no sleep can be accommodated.
This stage is entered from an hour to an hour and a half after falling asleep. After this, the sleep
12
stages are repeated and the REM sleep time lengthens, while the time spent in the 3 stages of
non-REM sleep becomes shorter (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2011).
Normally, sleep begins with a non-REM sleep where you sleep gently and can be easily
awakened by noise or other circumstances. In this first stage the eyes move slowly, the muscles
relax and the rates of your heart and breathing decrease. Afterwards, we enter a stage 2 of non-
MOR sleep where it is defined by slower brain waves with occasional bursts of rapid waves, this
is where half of the sleep is spent at night. When you progress to phase 3 of non-REM sleep, the
brain waves become much slower and the brain begins to produce extremely slow waves called
Delta. This is a very deep stage of sleep (considered as the restorative stage), during which it is
very difficult to wake up. Thanks to this the person feels well rested and energetic during the day
There are certain sleep disorders that prevent maintaining the overall health of people, as they are
alterations related to the sleep process. These disorders can prevail in the stages of initiation,
The International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD) distinguishes three major groups of
sleep disorders: disomnias, which correspond to the difficulty of initiating or maintaining sleep,
events that occur associated with sleep, in it are: night terrors, nightmares, sleepwalking,
somniloquy, nighttime bruxism and nocturnal enuresis and psychiatric sleep disorders (Caballo,
2008).

The objective of this study was to analyze whether the proper use of sleep hygiene strategies
After reviewing the current state of the subject, our hypothesis would be posed in the following
terms: "If sleep hygiene strategies are used, the quality of sleep will improve".
Method
Sample:
A non-probabilistic sample of 23 subjects, with ages go from 18 to 59 years old, of indistinct sex,
who had problems sleeping and who did not have a medical condition, was selected. The
inclusion criteria was the following: insufficient perception in the quality of sleep, problems to
fall asleep, people who wake up frequently at night, people who do not consume or make use of
any toxic substance (alcohol, drugs, etc.) after 6 o'clock in the afternoon. If the person, presented
some psychological pathology, problems in the state of mind, or with problems of alcoholism,
Instruments:
- Pittsburgh Questionnaire Quality of sleep: This instrument evaluates the quality of sleep
and its clinical alterations during the previous month. It consists of 19 items, which are
combined to form components (subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration,
habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disorders, use of sleep medications and diurnal
dysfunction). The result of the seven components is added to give a global score, which

adaptation of the Questionnaire was made to a google forms format, so that the results
- Handbook of sleep hygiene strategies: This instrument was created by us, it is a manual
that consists of 12 strategies, ranging from the place of sleep, to the improvement or
implementation of life habits. This manual was used to verify if the use of the sleep
Procedure:
In the first place, the Pittsburgh Quality of Sleep Questionnaire was applied in two ways, the
original so that it would give us the global score and one that was transcribed to a Google Forms
form which would automatically show us the results to an Excel sheet, giving the possibility of
obtaining the desired results. Secondly, 12 of the candidates applied the treatment plan, using the
manual sleep hygiene techniques, for two weeks, while the other 11 candidates continued with
their normal routines without applying the strategies. Third, after two weeks of using the
strategies and, on the contrary, not having used them, the Pittsburgh Questionnaire was applied
again, in the two ways previously described, and a comparison was made between the results
thrown by the subjects who used the techniques and those who did not, as well as being
compared with the results obtained at the beginning, to see if sleep hygiene techniques had any
The type of study conducted within the SPSS program was the Mann-Whitney U test, non-
parametric test. Which is used to compare two samples, independent groups, which in this case
was the group of 12 subjects who made use of the strategies and the other group, equal to 11
For this study, the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test was used, where the dependent variable
was sleep quality and the independent one was the use of sleep hygiene strategies.
When comparing the results of the subjects who made use of sleep hygiene strategies with those
who did not, a significant difference between both groups could be observed. The average score
in the "with strategies" group was 3.33, while for the group "without strategies" it was 7.36,
almost 4 points of difference, which indicates that the lower the score, the better it is the quality
of sleep in people.
The analysis started with the following question: Does the quality of sleep depend on the
adequate and constant use of sleep hygiene strategies? The null hypothesis and the alternative
hypothesis were proposed from this question. The null hypothesis, "If sleep hygiene strategies
are used, sleep quality, will not improve", was rejected when obtaining a significant value of
.019. At the moment of rejecting the null hypothesis, the alternative hypothesis is accepted
automatically, "If the sleep hygiene strategies are used, the quality of sleep, will improve". What
Discussion:
In this study we decided to analyze whether the continuous use of sleep hygiene strategies
positively affects the quality of a person's sleep. In the same way, this study allows us to deduce
that the importance of sleep is observed not only in its restorative function, but in the same way it
16
The study was made using the Pittsburg quality of sleep questionnaire, where only 27% of the
control group obtained in the second measurement, a score lower than the initial one while 100%
of the experimental group obtained a significant difference, positioning 75% of them within a
score lower than five which indicates , in general, an optimal sleep quality.
In this sense, the lack of healthy habits implies a decrease in the quality of sleep, and if
relation to health. In a broad sense, it affects the general health causing neurological deficits,
balance disorders and lesser capacity in the management of pain, and predisposes the organism
Therefore, according to our results, to improve the quality of sleep in people, it should be
promoted the use of strategies and good habits for adequate preventive treatment at the primary
or secondary level. For this reason, it is also necessary to use questionnaires to quickly evaluate
both, the quality of sleep of adults and related problems that this person may present at that time
to know if it is necessary to evaluate sleep in a deep way in a person who does not really have
sleep problems or on the contrary, it indicates the need to make said evaluation in clinical
practice.
