1. Introducción
FACHADA FLOTANTE
Se entiende por fachada flotante a la parte anterior del edificio o construcción, es
decir, a la parte de enfrente del mismo.
Generalmente, una fachada tradicional tiene un espesor de unos 15 cm., y un peso

por m2 variable.
Una fachada que sobrepasa de los 200 kg/m2 se consideran fachadas pesadas;
mientras que las inferiores a ese valor se denominan fachadas ligeras o flotantes.
Las fachadas flotantes, están fijadas a la estructura del edificio, pero no forman parte
de la construcción del mismo, por lo que no aumenta la resistencia de dicha estructura
sino que descansa sobre ella.
VENTAJAS:
1. Permite disminuir varios metros cuadrados de espacio interior, al ganar como mínimo
unos 20 cm a lo largo de la fachada. En un edificio de gran altura, la superficie que
se gana es muy importante en el total del edificio.
2. Al ser de materiales ligeros y grandes acristalamientos se logra una mejor visibilidad

y luminosidad interior.
3. Es rápida de montar y no requiere gastos de mantenimiento.
Los elementos que conforman una fachada flotante son los siguientes:
1. Montaje vertical: Están fijados a los anclajes y soportan los elementos que se fijan
a ellos, la carga del viento e incluso su propio peso.
2. Travesaños horizontales: Van anclados a los montantes y soportan la carga de los

elementos de relleno que van fijados a ellos.
3. Elementos de relleno: se dividen en dos grupos: acristalamientos y paneles. El

acristalado está ubicado en la parte de la fachada que permite la visibilidad al exterior.
El panel, esta ubicado en la zona de antepecho o como cubre-forjado cuando la
fachada está totalmente acristalada.
4. Elementos de fijación: Entre ellos se encuentran los anclajes fijos, los anclajes deslizantes
y las uniones. Los anclajes fijos, son los que inmovilizan totalmente el elemento portante
a la estructura del edificio; los deslizantes, permiten absorber las dilataciones o
contracciones que pueden originarse en la fachada.
Las uniones también pueden ser fijas o deslizantes. Los primeros, se usan para anclar
los travesaños a los montantes. Los deslizantes se utilizan en las juntas de dilatación.
1. Introduction
FLOATING CURTAIN WALLS

A Floating Curtain Wall is the outer part of a building or construction, in other words,
the building front.
Generally, a traditional front or curtain wall has a thickness of 15 cms. and a variable
m2 weight.
A curtain wall that passes 200 kg/m2 is considered heavy curtain walls; while the ones
with an inferior value are denominated as lightweight curtain walls.
The floating curtain walls are secured to the building structure, but don’t form an actual
part of the construction, for this reason, they don’t increase the structure’s resistance
but only rest on it.
ADVANTAGES :
1. Permits the reduction of various square meters of interior space, by gaiing a minimum
of 20 cms. in the length of the curtain walls. In a building of great height, the superficial
area that is gained is very important to the total of the building.
2. A better visibility and interior brightness are obtained through the use of lightweight
materials and large window panes.
3. Rapid installation and doesn’t require maintainance.
The elements that conform a floating curtain wall are the following :
1. Vertical Mounting: They are fixed to the anchors and support the elements which
are secured to them including the windload and its own weight.
2. Horizontal Crosspieces: Are anchored to the vertical pieces and support the filler
elements which are secured to them.
3. Filler elements: Are divided in two groups: Window panes and glass panels. The
window pane is located in the front part of the building permitting an external visibility.
The glass panel is located on the window ledge area or as a floating cover when the
building is completely glass – covered.
4. Fixed Elements: Among these are the fixed anchors, the sliding anchors and the
joints. The fixed anchors are the ones which completely immobilize a vertical element
to the building’s structure; the sliding ones absorb the expansion or contractions which
occur in the curtain wall. The joints may also be fixed or sliding. The fixed ones are
used to anchor the crosspieces to the vertical pieces. The sliding ones are used in the
expansion joints.
