Características del Otorongo

Es una especie ligada a la historia y tradiciones del Perú: su imagen ha

sido grabada en piedras de templos prehispánicos, en ceramios y textiles.
Además, es protagonista de numerosos mitos y leyendas, que confirman
la gran importancia que tuvo en épocas antiguas.

Se encuentra en estado de extinción, si no se reduce la deforestación de

la selva amazónica y la caza indiscriminada por el tráfico de pieles.

Su apariencia es similar al del leopardo. Este animal es el único

miembro de los “grandes felinos” que habitan el continente americano. Le
gusta habitar zonas de la selva. Junto con el tigre es uno de los felinos a
los que les gusta nadar. Es un felino solitario generalmente de color
amarillo con manchas negras. Tiene dientes gruesos y muy potentes al
triturar.

Son generalmente de color café amarilloso, con manchas negras, tienen

muy buen sentidos del olfato y el oído. El otorongo tiene un periodo de

años.
