island of Nevis in either 1755 or ‘57,
his father was a Scottish trader
named James, and his mother,
Rachel Fawcett Lavine, was married
to someone else at the time (though
they were separated). Hamilton's
father abandoned them when he was
a baby; at some point, his mother
moved the family to St. Croix in the
Virgin Islands. When Rachel died of a
fever in 1768, Hamilton and his older
brother went to live with a relative,
Pyer Lytton.
