3. The atmosphere protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, and helps maintain the Earth’s

BIOSPHERE: BIOSFERA

1. The biosphere is composed of all living organisms: animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms: la biosfera está
2. It includes all the ecosystems on land and in the ocean and rivers: incluye todos los ecosistemas en la tierra y en
el océano y ríos.

GEOSPHERE: GEOSFERA

1. The geosphere is the solid part of the Earth; it is made up of three layers: the core, the mantle and the crust: la
2. The core is the hottest part of the Earth; it’s made of iron: el núcleo es la parte más caliente de la tierra.
2.1. The outer core is a liquid metal: el núcleo externo es un metal líquido.
2.2. The inner core is solid because the pressure here is so strong that the iron solidifies: el núcleo interno es
3. The mantle surrounds the core: el manto rodea el núcleo.
3.1. Heat and pressure in the mantle can melt rock; this liquid rock is called magma: el calor y la presión en el
4. The crust is the outer layer of the geosphere; it’s made up of rocks and minerals: la corteza es la capa externa de
la geosfera.
4.1. The crust forms the continents, the islands and the ocean floors: la corteza forma los continentes, las islas y
el suelo oceánico.
5. The crust is thicker under the continents than under the oceans: la corteza es más gruesa bajo los continentes
que bajo los océanos.

HYDROSPHERE: HIDROSFERA.

1. The hydrosphere is all the water that exists on Earth: la hidrosfera es todo el agua que existe en la tierra.
2. Water covers about 75% of the planet: el agua cubre sobre el 75% del planeta.
3. We can find water in all three states of matter; solid, liquid and gaseous: podemos encontrar agua en los tres

1. To describe geographical locations on Earth, we use a system of imaginary lines called parallels and meridians:
Para describir localizaciones geográficas en la tierra, usamos un sistema de líneas imaginarias llamadas paralelos
y meridianos.
2. Parallels are circular lines that go around the Earth from east to west: los paralelos son líneas circulares que van
2.1. The longest parallel, the Equator, divides the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern
3. Meridians are circular lines that go from north to south and pass through the poles: los meridianos son líneas
3.1. Meridians are the same length: los meridianos tienen la misma longitud.
3.2. The Prime Meridian, also called the Greenwich Meridian, divides the Earth into the Eastern Hemisphere
and the Western Hemisphere: el Primer Meridiano, también llamado Meridiano Greenwich, divide la tierra
en hemisferio este y hemisferio oeste.
4. The parallels and meridians form a grid that we use to measure the geographic coordinates of different places:
los paralelos y meridianos forman una cuadrícula que usamos para medir las coordenadas geográficas de
diferentes lugares.
5. Latitude is the distance in degrees from the Equator (0˚): la latitud es la distancia en grados desde el ecuador.
5.1. The points north form the Equator are northern latitudes (N): los puntos norte desde el ecuador son
latitudes norte.
5.2. The points south from the Equator are southern latitudes (S): los puntos sur desde el ecuador son latitudes
sur.
5.3. The North Pole is at 90˚N and the South Pole is at 90˚S: el polo norte está a 90˚ nortes y el polo sur está a
90˚ sur.
6. Longitude is the distance in degrees from the Primer Meridian (0˚): la longitud es la distancia en grados desde el
Primer Meridiano.
6.1. The points east from the Prime Meridian are eastern longitudes (E): los puntos este desde el Primer
Meridiano son longitudes este.
6.2. The points west from the Prime Meridian are western longitudes (W): los puntos oeste desde el Primer
meridiano son longitudes oeste.
7. The latitude of Madrid is 40˚N and the longitude of Madrid is 3˚W: la latitud de Madrid es 40˚N y la longitud de
Madrid es 3˚O.
7.1. The geographic coordinates of Madrid are 40˚N, 3˚W: las coordenadas geográficas de Madrid son 40˚N, 3˚O.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MAPS: CARACTERÍSTICAS DE MAPAS.

1. Features and objects on maps are represented using symbols: las características y objetos en los mapas se
representan usando símbolos.
2. The meaning of these symbols is explained in a key: el significado de estos símbolos está explicado en una clave.
3. Maps include a compass rose that shows cardinal directions: los mapas incluyen una brújula que muestra los
puntos cardinales.
4. Maps have a scale; a scale shows the relationship between the distances on the map and the actual distances

1. Political maps show countries, their borders and capital cities: los mapas políticos muestran países, sus fronteras
y sus ciudades capitales.

2
PHYSICAL MAPS: MAPAS FÍSICOS

1. Physical maps show physical features, such as mountains, plains and rivers: los mapas físicos muestran
características físicas, como montañas, llanuras y ríos.

WEATHER MAPS: MAPAS CLIMÁTICOS

1. A weather map shows cloud cover, rainfall and temperatures: un mapa climático muestra la nubosidad, las
precipitaciones y temperaturas.

GLOBES AND WORLD MAPS: GLOBOS TERRÁQUEOS Y MAPAMUNDIS

1. Globes are more accurate than maps for representing the Earth because they are three-dimensional like the
2. Once you try to reproduce the surface of the Earth on a flat map, the sizes and shapes get distorted: una vez
3. Some countries appear larger than they really are: algunos paises parecen mayores de lo que son en realidad.
