"My Brilliant Friend" es una historia de amistad - una amistad humana, cruda y humillante - en el

to pay for it, but Elena does. Lila's father is a shoemaker and Elena's father is a doorman at
a hotel in Naples. Without Lila to compete, she continues her studies successfully.
Sometimes she needs Lila's help, and sometimes she is driven by her own intelligence and
ability to write.

Girls reach adolescence with all the normal adornments: insecurities, different levels of
self-confidence and falling in love with local boys. At the age of thirteen, Lila has become
the beauty of the neighborhood. Elena, too, yearns to be pretty and finds as many ways as
she can to match Lila's success.

The goal for both girls is to overcome their birth and leave "the neighborhood," the area
where families have lived for generations and are at the whim of the Solara family. Lila,
who is brilliant but cannot go to school, puts all her energy into one outing: she and her
brother Rino design and handcraft a pair of shoes that they hope to mass market and sell
under the name Cerullo. Shoes become his focus and obsession for over a year. All his
ferocity and intelligence is poured into the project. Meanwhile, Elena excels in school,
with some help from Lila in Latin and Greek.

When Elena reaches high school age, she is promoted and encouraged to attend. Elena is
an honest student, and Lila is the prettiest girl in the area, the target of most of the girls in
the neighborhood. Elena fills her time with several empty relationships to try to keep up
with Lila's fans. Although her heart belongs to Nino Sarratore, the son of the local poet,
she is content with a few boys in the neighborhood who help her feel loved and cherished.

Girls turn fourteen, then fifteen, in this tumultuous period. Marcello Solara, the son of the
new'ogre' of the neighbourhood, ruthlessly courts Lila with his money and power, and she
resists the will of her family. Elena leaves for a summer on an island at sea, becoming
strong, safe and beautiful. The Sarratores are also there; Nino kisses her, and the beauty
of the moment is lost when her father attacks her sexually.
On her return from the beach, Elena meets Lila defending the interests of Stefano Caracci,
the shopkeeper, one of the richest young men in the neighbourhood, competing for the
influence of the Solaras. She walks the tightrope between these two young men, finally
launching Marcello and choosing Stefano, who agrees to invest in an expansion of her
father's shoe business.

During her engagement, Lila becomes even more beautiful thanks to Stefano's wealth. The
locals love her and hate her with their envy. Elena is trapped in the same trap, and is also
trying to deal with her own feelings of inadequacy and pressure to leave the
neighborhood. The novel ends in a suspenseful ending at Lila and Stefano's wedding. They
are sixteen years old: Elena has two years of high school left and is desperate to get out
and rise above the "plebs" among whom she was born. Lila walks with feigned audacity in
her marriage, finding at the last minute that her husband Stefano has sold out to the
hated Solara family.
