Some uses of ser and estar: Both estar and ser mean ‘to be’ but their uses are very different
(for the forms of ser, see Unit 1).
r Ser is used to give personal information like origin, nationality, occupation, political
affiliation and religion. It is also used to describe general characteristics of people,
places and objects. Marital status can be expressed with either ser or estar.
Origin Soy de Madrid. Political affiliation Es socialista.
Nationality Marı́a es española. Religion Son católicos.
Occupation Soy profesor. Marital status Soy/estoy casada.
Description Juan es alto / Sheffield es bastante grande.
r Estar is used when talking about health, and location of people, places and objects. With
locations it is often followed by a preposition of place and normally requires the definite
article (in contrast with hay which is normally followed by the indefinite article un or una):
Health ¿Cómo estás? Location Está en la farmacia.
