ABSTRACT
The era in which Claro M. Recto spent his youth was a time of transition from the
Spanish colonization to the American occupation. During this transition, social reforms were
taking place, particularly in the cultural and gender aspects of society, and therefore had been
embedded in the literary production of the epoch. Having said this, our study aims to look
into the role that the embodiment of gender roles and stereotypes plays in the narrative
development of Solo entre las sombras, a one-act play written in 1917 by Recto. To carry out
the scene analysis, the structural approach to the arts and the typology of gender roles and
stereotypes were used. Furthermore, the epochal circumstances, the gender situations of the
era, and the phenomena brought about by the patriarchy in the Philippines were also utilized
as the historical context with which the gender roles and stereotypes in the play were

work performed onstage. Through our analysis, we were able to find out that the three main
means of embodiment of gender roles and stereotypes (fulfillment and acceptance; rejection
or breach; and exceedance) move the plot: conflicts are created and changes in the status quo
occur, among others. It was also proven that Recto’s one-act play resonates his ideas, beliefs,
reactions and sentiments toward the changes that the Americans brought to the Philippines
with which he disagreed. Moreover, the usage of the theatre play enables the direct
presentation, transmission and visualization of the said ideas and beliefs of the author.
