Machu Picchu, la antigua ciudad de los Incas, se encuentra en las alturas de la cordillera de los
Andes, en el departamento de Cuzco, en Perú.
Ubicada a medio camino entre los Andes y la floresta amazónica en la quebrada de Picchu,
vivían poblaciones andinas, no selváticas, alrededor del año 1400. La ciudadela de Machu
Picchu estuvo en el olvido por unos 300 años hasta que en 1911 el historiador y explorador
norteamericano Hiram Bingham la redescubrió y la hizo conocida al mundo. Nueve años antes
ya había sido descubierta por un hacendado cuzqueño llamado Agustín Lizárraga.
Esta ciudad misteriosa y encantadora, cuyo nombre significa “montaña vieja” en español, servía
de fortaleza militar y residencia de la familia real incaica y de los pobladores incas. Estaba
rodeada de muros y tenía más de cien escaleras, acueductos, casas, jardines y otros edificios.
La primera vista es el Huayna Picchu, nombre en quechua que en español significa “montaña
joven” y a cuya cima se puede acceder mediante un camino escalonado. Desde allí se observa
la ciudad construida por categorías. En las casas más cercanas al Huayna Picchu vivían las clases
altas, los religiosos y los guerreros. Las casas más lejanas eran de las clases más pobres. Solo se
observan las paredes construidas piedra sobre piedra, sin cemento, pues los techos eran de
paja. Todavía se conservan varios símbolos, un reloj solar y lugares de rituales. Hay pequeñas
mesetas donde pastan las alpacas y hay una zona agrícola de andenes (terrazas de cultivo).
Los andenes de Machu Picchu son grandes escalones construidos sobre la ladera. Estas estructuras
formadas por un muro de piedra y un relleno de diferentes capas de material tales como piedras,
arcilla y tierra de cultivo, hacían más fácil el drenaje. Esto permitía que el agua no se acumulara en
ellas y no se arruinara su estructura. Los incas cultivaban la papa o patata y el maíz.
Machu Picchu forma parte de la Lista de Patrimonios de la Humanidad de la Unesco desde 1983
y el 7 de julio de 2007 fue declarada como una de las nuevas siete maravillas del mundo
moderno. Un lugar que transmite paz, ideal para respirar aire puro y ponerse en total contacto
con la naturaleza.
