Recommended Supplies:
1 to 1.5 3-ring binder
Notebook paper
Sharpened pencils and/or pens
Highlighters
3x5 note cards for vocabulary practice and a container with your name on it
English/Spanish dictionary (on device or pocket-size)

Spanish Binder:
Each student will need a three-ring binder to be used EXCLUSIVELY for Spanish class. The notebook should be
between 1 inch and 1 inches high. This notebook will be used in class and for homework assignments, so you
will be expected to bring it every single day. With proper care, this notebook can be used for more than one
year so that all of your resources are together.

You should have your binder on or before: _____________________________

Course Objectives:
Students will develop an appreciation and awareness of the language and culture of the Spanish
speaking world.
Students will learn to ask and answer basic questions about themselves and their surroundings in
Spanish.
Students will understand the idea behind short, simple texts and be able to produce the target
language in written form.

Participation:
Be a part of this class! Pay attention to what is going on around you and volunteer answers (effort counts!),
even when you are not positive you have the right answer. Part of learning a new language is making errors
--- we learn from them! Remember that when you were learning English the words did not always come out
perfectly the first time. Relax and participate!

Attendance:
It is expected that you are in your seat when the bell rings and that you will have your three-ring binder,
completed assignments, writing utensil, and any other necessary materials with you at your desk. A student
who is tardy is missing out on instruction and his or her practice time. Any tardy after the third offense will
result in a referral to the Assistant Principal for disciplinary action.

Grading Policies:

Final Grade Calculation:

80% - Trimester Grade
50% - Summative Assessments (quizzes, projects)

Quiz retakes and corrections may be offered throughout the year to earn back some of the points missed
during the original assessment. Remediation may or may not be required in order to partake in the retake
opportunity.

Late Work Policy:

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date specified in class or online. It is expected that you
turn in all work on time. While it is important to complete your work on time, late work will be accepted with
the following provisions:
1. You may earn up to half credit (50%) on most assignments. If it is not possible to earn late credit on
an assignment, it will be specified ahead of time in class.
2. Depending on the assignment, it may be emailed to guerreroa@sjredwings.org to ensure a time
and date stamp.
3. If you feel you have extenuating circumstances, please contact Srta. Guerrero.
4. If absent for a quiz, the quiz may be given the next day you are in class.
5. If you are going to miss a quiz or due date due to an excused absence, please let Srta. Guerrero
know ahead of time so that arrangements can be made.

High School Credit Policy:

Students will receive one World Language high school graduation credit upon successful completion of this
course.

Class Behavioral Support System:

Students are expected to follow all rules and guidelines laid out in the SJMS Student Handbook.
Also, students will be expected to:
Give respect to others, personal belongings, and the learning environment
Participate and give their best effort at all times
Come to class prepared
Be willing to keep an open mind in order to learn something new

Technology:
Technology will be used frequently this year in Spanish class as a valuable resource for language acquisition.
All students are expected to uphold SJMS technology rules as outlined in the school handbook.

Quizlet
Quizlet is an online flashcard and study tool that students will have access to inside and outside of our
classroom. Here they will find all of their vocabulary sets for the year to study and practice. Often times they
will receive study sets for quizzes, tests, and exams.

Remind
Parents and guardians may sign up to receive either text messages or emails through a website called
Remind. To sign up, please send a text to 81010 with the code @srtagesp. When you do this, you will be signed
up to receive any messages that are sent out. These messages will be coming directly from me and will be
informing you of homework assignments, upcoming tests, or any information that may be helpful for you to
know in regards to our Spanish class.

WordReference
Instead of using Google Translate, students are asked to use wordreference.com to look up any Spanish words
they are unsure of. It is a reliable online tool used by native and non-native speakers all over the world.
