This is the basic formula for subjunctive
that every student in this class must know
well, for the 4 basic subjunctive verb
tenses. Every student will write activities,
compositions, quizzes and tests with these
4 tenses: presente, imperfecto, presente
perfecto, pluscuamperfecto.
ANTICIPATION (p.97) of an action that
has not taken place, that will take place.
Yo quiero que t hagas el trabajo.
Ella recomienda que t tengas paciencia.

Yo quera que t hicieras el trabajo.
Ella recomendaba que t tuvieras
paciencia. (IMPERFECTO)
(This is anticipation in the past: an action
that was going to take place.)
REACTION (p.102) to a completed
action that already took place.
Me alegro de que t hayas hecho el
trabajo.
Es horrible que t no hayas tenido
paciencia. (PRESENTE PERFECTO)
Me alegraba de que t hubieras hecho el

wisely.
NOTE 1: Students do not keep the exams. Each exam review is the same format as the
exam. Treat the exam review in a serious way as preparation and as practice for the exam.
NOTE 2: Students are not allowed to leave the classroom during an exam. A student can
use the bathroom before the exam, and come back in the room and finish the exam with
plenty of time. The exams are very reasonable in length.
NOTE 3: Spelling is very important on the exams. It is necessary to write down the
correct answer and to spell the correct answer accurately. Remember that speaking a
language is one thing, but spelling correctly is something else entirely and requires
spelling practice.
Grade scale

B+: 87-89
B: 84-86
B-: 80-83
C+: 77-79

D+: 67-69
D: 64-66
D-: 60-63
F: 0-59
NOTE: DO NOT REQUEST for the professor to change your grades or to curve the
grades. Changing the grades is UNETHICAL. Under no circumstances will the grades be
changed, regardless of the consequences for scholarship, program, GPA or the like. The
grade earned is the grade that will remain.
ETHICS. ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT- University guidelines for academic conduct apply to
all aspects of this course. When a student copies (exam, quiz, and so on.), I follow WWU
procedures.
DISABILITIES: If any student enrolled in this course has a disability that would prevent
her or him from demonstrating a full range of abilities on work for the class, please
contact me privately as soon as possible to discuss additional options.
ATTENDANCE,
ABSENCES,
TARDIES
3 TARDIES = 1 ABSENCE. No one with 1 tardy during the week has an A in
participation for that week.
DEFINITION OF TARDY: arriving anytime after class begins. In addition, leaving class
early is counted as a TARDY. A total of 5 or more tardies during the quarter
automatically disqualifies an A in the overall participation grade for the quarter.
Arriving 30 minutes late is an absence. Leaving 30 minutes early is also an absence.

NOTE: The classroom wall clock may or may not have the correct time. It is the
students responsibility to arrive before class begins and to know what the correct time is.
Absences affect the participation grade because it is impossible to participate in class
when absent. NOTE: Participation remains unaffected in cases of students absent but who
have the letter, as explained below.
Each day is 33.3% of participation for the week, since there are 3 days of class.
At the end of the quarter, the participation grade is an average of all weeks.
Since exposure is crucial to learning a second language, attendance in this course is
mandatory. At the end of the quarter, the total final grade for the class is:
0-3 absences = the grade is not affected
4 absences = the grade is lowered by 1 point
5 absences = lowered by 2 points
6 absences = lowered by 3 points
7 absences = lowered by 4 points
Over 7 absences = lowered by 5 points
UNIVERSITY-SPONSORED EVENTS, e.g., sports team.
Bring a note, by the end of the 2nd week, on letterhead from coach or supervisor
citing your name, your participation and the quarter dates you will miss. However, such
absences still count as part of your allotted three non-penalty absences.
If the letter you submitted confirming participation in university-sponsored events
requires you to miss 3+ days of class for related events, you must use your 3 penaltyfree absences days first but wont incur penalty for further event-related absences.
NOTE: All other non-event absences DO count.
ATTENDANCE SHEET. There will be an attendance sheet that you are required to sign
everyday. Sign it: signature of first name and last name. It is the students responsibility
to make sure s/he has signed it. If s/he does not sign it, I may have no way of knowing
s/he was present in class. If I cannot remember that s/he was in class (maybe her/his
participation is not that active), and the sheet is not signed, then thats an absence.
PARTICIPATION
PARTICIPATION
PARTICIPATION
Preparation: It is the students responsibility to keep up with the class and its
assignments. Therefore, its a good idea to exchange email information with a couple of
classmates to find out what happened in class on a day of absence.
If absent, it is the students responsibility to get the notes from a classmate. I will
not post nor email notes/summaries for those that are absent.
PARTICIPATION GRADES:
Being in class and participating in class are two different matters. For each day I calculate
a participation grade that will reflect each students involvement in class activities, etc.
An A grade:
An A is reserved for exceptional and consistent participation in Spanish every day.

Volunteers ACTIVELY and AT ALL times, answers questions, contributes to a

productive classroom environment, sets a good example, helps other classmates, does not
arrive late, behaves appropriately, utilizes wisely the time/activities in class that are
designed to speak Spanish, asks questions when has doubts, is not rude or impolite to
other students or to the professor, has a constructive attitude about the activities and work
in the classroom. Basically, this student is energetically pursuing the A in participation in
a very untiring, consistent way and on a daily basis.
B: Is always prepared, volunteers a lot every day, but NOT always.
C: Is prepared, volunteers half the time. Knows whats going on, does the work well.
D: Volunteers only some of the time, only a bit more than several times each class, and
does not need to be called on to volunteer.
F: It is necessary to call on this student. Does not know what page or exercise we are
on. Violates the policies of this class. Being called on is not the same as volunteering.
COMPOSICIONES
COMPOSICIONES
COMPOSICIONES
There will be three compositions, written in class.
Students will know the composition topic in class, the day of the composition.
IF there is a second version, and corrections have been made, the grade will
increase a couple of points. However, it is the first version that is, by far, the most
important towards earning the grade. For example, no composition will go from C to B,
or from B to A based on corrections made. The grade will increase if corrections are
made, but it is only a reasonable increase, not a drastic one. The corrections are done in
class.
Not making the corrections (and by the deadline) = the composition grade is a 0
(zero).
2 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
1. The professor DOES NOT correct the composition, the student WILL CORRECT IT
by using these resources listed below. It is essential to do a good job because the
professor will not fix the composition.
2. It is the students responsibility to prepare beforehand at home for the composition.
Every students situation is different, so each student should think about what the areas of
concern are and work on those. Of course, I am able to help students with these issues,
but it is up to each student to think about her or his own situation and needs, and see me
and tell me how I can help.
There will be more instructions at the time of each composition, but here are some
instructions.
It is obligatory to have 1 folder (no binders) named Composiciones to keep:
A) All compositions at all times. Do not take them out.
B) 3 copies of the composition rubric.
C) 1 copy of the code of corrections (a list of abbreviations for how to correct errors)
D) 1 copy of the common errors (a list of common errors to avoid)

Compositions are: Written by hand, double-spaced, in pencil (to avoid messy revisions).
Do not write in pen! Dictionaries, textbooks, books of verbs, etc. are allowed.
No phones/computers/internet allowed.
Consulting with me during the composition is allowed, of course.
Every composition will have very specific things that are required and those requirements
will need to be highlighted or underlined:
A) An original title. Composicin 1 is not an acceptable title.
B) A short introduction: what the composition will cover.
C) Two or three paragraphs (the body of the composition)
D) A conclusion: Are there answers to the questions analyzed in the composition? Does
the composition propose more questions?
QUALITY: attention to detail, care with verb conjugation, attention to the list of common
errors to avoid.
--The composition must have a word count at the end. Please dont make me count.
