La primera Feria de las flores que se realiz en Medelln fue el 1 de mayo de 1957 -por
ser entonces mayo el mes asignado a las flores- bajo la iniciativa del ilustre
antioqueo Arturo Uribe Arango, cuando ste era miembro de la junta de la Oficina de
Fomento y Turismo de la ciudad. Esta primera celebracin dur cinco das y
naturalmente fue algo incipiente si se compara con el brillo de la feria actual. Sin
embargo, con casetas en varios sitios de la ciudad y con fiestas privadas en los clubes
sociales, los antioqueos pudieron disfrutar por primera vez la magia carnavalesca de
las flores expuestas en pblico.
En la programacin de aquel entonces se incluy una exposicin de flores en el atrio de
la Catedral Metropolitana, organizada por el Club de Jardinera de Medelln. Cuando se
dio inicio al Desfile de Silleteros, slo participaron 40 campesinos del corregimiento
de Santa Elena, que se agruparon en el Parque de Bolvar.
Con el paso del tiempo, la feria fue tomando fuerza hasta convertirse en el festejo ms
importante de la ciudad, que hoy da goza de mucho prestigio en el exterior. La
celebracin, que inicialmente se celebr en mayo, a partir de 1968 se sigui realizando
en agosto, mes conmemorativo de la independencia antioquea, y desde entonces no
ha dejado de vestir, con verdaderos mares de flores y variedad decolores y aromas, las
calles de la ciudad.Es una celebracin que ningn turista quisiera perder, adems de
que es hermoso lo que se realiza en esta, no necesita corridas de toros ni uso de
animales para ser una de las celebraciones ms hermosas que se llevan a cabo
anualmente en Colombia.
Antes de la celebracin, muchos antioqueos suelen visitar el corregimiento de Santa
Elena para observar cmo se fabrican las "silletas" que cargan las flores durante la
feria.
Debido al cultivo y la feria de las flores la ciudad recibe el nombre de "Ciudad de la
eterna Primavera".
Silleta Emblemtica
Tiene un mensaje cvico o educativo, se elabora con flores pegadas o clavadas de tal
manera que no se vea el cartn o icopor donde van puestas. Las imgenes ms
utilizadas en estas silletas son los smbolos patrios, religiosos y retratos de
personalidades. Silleta Monumental Se caracteriza por ser realizada con flores
colocadas en ramilletes enteros. Debe contener como mnimo cuatro variedades
diferentes de flores, adems de llevar obligatoriamente gladiolos y/o espigas alrededor.
Silleta Tradicional
Esta silleta era la
utilizada por los
campesinos que vendan,
a principio de siglo, las
flores por las calles de
Medelln o en la Placita
de Flores. Su elaboracin

Los Silleteros
Una tradicin familiar de ancianos, hombres, mujeres y
nios...Los silleteros, orgullosos de su consagrada actividad
en la que reviven las viejas tradiciones paisas, desfilan la
variedad de las flores con un atuendo que tampoco pierde la
usanza: Las mujeres llevan blusa blanca, paoleta roja, falda de color negro con
enaguas y adornada con flores, delantal blanco y alpargatas. Los hombres lucen
pantaln y delantal negro, camisa blanca, sombrero, paoleta roja en el cuello,
Las flores
Qu hay detrs de su belleza? Desde tiempos remotos el hombre ha utilizado las
flores para expresar sus sentimientos. Por esta razn, las vemos presentes en las
tristezas, en las alegras, en el amor y en el desamor. Conozca algunos significados de
las flores, protagonistas de la Feria. Las de siempre: Las RosasRoja: Expresan amor y
pasin, quizs por esta razn son las preferidas por los enamorados. Un simple amigo

Esto es lo que desean decirle si le envan rosas rojas. Se trata de uno de los colores
ms excitantes y si el encarnado es el de la flor, lo que significa es pasin, emocin e
incluso peligro. Rosada: Estn ligadas a la felicidad y al crecimiento espiritual, por ello
no pueden faltar en las fiestas de quince aos, los nacimientos y grados. Adems de
ser una bella manera de transmitir agradecimiento a familiares y amigos."Gracias".
HISTORY
The first fair of the flowers in Medelln was on May 1, 1957 - as then may the monthassi

nal spring".
Emblematic saddle
It has a civic or educational message, made from flowers glued or nailed in such a way

Traditional saddle

The Silleteros
A family tradition of elders, men, women and children... The silleteros, proud of theirco
