What is soil?
The soil consists of minerals, organic matter, tiny plant and animal
organisms, air and water. It is a thin layer that has formed very slowly, through the
centuries, with the disintegration of the surface rocks by the action of water,
temperature changes and wind. The plants and animals that grow and die in and
Water and air: occupy pore spaces between soil particles produced by
irregularities in their shape and size. Distribution and pore size is important. An
excessive amount of small pores originates compact soils, heavy, wet and a poor
root growth.
Soil characteristics
The soil word derived from the Latin word "solum" and is the one that was
formerly called the surface of planet earth. the soil is very old, and is the way in
which he defined the earth's surface, the Latin word from which it derives, had an
original expression sole, and covered everything in what could walk. Today the
concept of soil has more parameters, among which biological and chemical
qualities of their composition, geographic and climatic settings.
Types of soil: The soil or soils have been classified according to their qualities, as
there are many differences between soil properties and the effects of climate and
atmosphere on it.
these are classified as:
Volcanic soil: Andosols volcanic soils are par excellence. They are formed
on volcanic ash and glass, as well as from other pyroclastic materials. When
young treasure dark colors, being highly porous, lightweight, permeable,
with good structure and easy to lock. Its fertility is considerable, but suffer
from some limitations. It is very suitable soils for agriculture if conditions
permit relief
Clayey soil: clay soil particles and few spaces porosos.Con high water
holding capacity and poor clay soil drenaje.El is one in which clay
predominates over other particles of other sizes. Clay is a set of very small
mineral particles, less than 0.001 mm. in diameter, as opposed to larger
ones such as silt and sand, in order of size, from smallest to largest
particles.
Tropical soil: soils are found in the tropics, they are exposed to a climate
characterized by high temperatures, with very few variations during the year,
and abundant rainfall for nearly six months.
Rocky soil: The rocky soil is a Litosol: It is considered a type of soil that
appears on cliffs and rocky outcrops, its thickness is less than 10 cm and
holds a low vegetation, also known as leptosols from the Greek leptos
meaning thin .
Soil layers
is composed of three main layers, these are called:
Single or soil top layer: This contains the necessary nutrients for plants
and it is known that this layer is impossible without the subsistence of life on
planet earth and the life cycle not occur.
Basement: This also contains food and minerals, but only are absorbed by
large plants like trees and large shrubs.
Layer or bedrock: This is the deepest layer of topsoil, and does not provide large
amounts of nutrients, but allows the maintenance of the previous two to hold and
keep the water.
