George Washington was born
on February 22,1732. On April
30, 1979, he became the first
president

of

the

United

States. He stayed in office


until March 4, 1797. Before he
became president, he earned
the trust and admiration of
the American people as a general in the war against England. One of

the most famous stories about Washington is not about his time as
general or as president. The story is about Washington as a boy.
One day, young George cut down a cherry tree. When his father
asked him if he had cut the tree down, he was afraid that he would be
punished if he told the truth. But he told the truth anyway, saying. I
cannot tell a lie.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, to a poor family and
lived in a log cabin, which is a small house made of tree trunks.
Although his family didnt have any money, Lincoln worked hard to
get an education. He read every book that he could find. Eventually,
he became a lawyer, and then, the 16 th president of the united
States. He held office from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865. People
often refer to Lincoln by his nickname. Honest Abe. No one is really
sure how he got the nickname, but some people say that it is because
one day, when he was working in a store as a young man, he gave
someone the wrong change.
When he realized what he had done, he followed the customer a long
way to give him the rest of his change.
