El propio observador debe desempear un papel activo al percibir el mundo y participar activamente de la elaboracin de su imagen. Debe contar con el poder de cambiar esa imagen para adaptarse a necesidades cambiantes. Un medio ambiente que est ordenado en forma detallada y definitiva puede impedir que aparezcan nuevas pautas de actividad. The observer himself should play an active role in perceiving the world and have a creative part in developing his image. He should have the power to change that image to fit changing needs. NUESTRA FILOSOFA
Queremos hablar de nuestro entorno urbano nocturno, del modo en que generamos y percibimos la imagen nocturna de nuestras ciudades, de la iluminacin de nuestras calles. Los avances tecnolgicos en este campo no parecen estar afectando excesivamente a la metodologa, a lo que se entiende por un alumbrado urbano de calidad: eficiente, seguro, ergonmico... Todos estos conceptos deben ser revisados, y la renovacin de obsoletas instalaciones en aras de la eficiencia energtica es una buena oportunidad para ello, a nuestro entender. Elegimos la experimentacin como va de desarrollo para nuestras propuestas. Queremos crear las condiciones para que las cosas sucedan, para este cambio.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
We want to talk and discuss about our nightly urban environment, about the way we create and perceive the nocturnal image of our cities, about the lighting of our streets. The availability of new technologies for lighting does not seem to be altering significantly the methodology applied for this purpose, our concepts about, for example, quality of lighting: ergonomy, eficiency, safety... All of these terms should be strongly revised, in our opinion, and the need to renew the obsolete installations due to energy efficiency requirements is a good opportunity to do so. We choose experimentation as a tool to develop our proposals, focused in the lighting design of public places, of spaces where there is a chance for social interchange, between people and between people and their environment, their lightscape. We want to arrange conditions for things to happen, for changes to come in this perception/communication of/with space. We believe in education as a form of producing and distributing culture for a social change, a form of activism and community building. During one of our workshops, many topics appear that we like to apply in practice: DIY, autonomy, the nightscape of our urban environment as part of a visual indentity and heritage, the special care that historic sites, public places and old city centres require in terms of a lighting project... and there is always a concept that flows through everything we do and debate: enablement of citizenship, as a way to favour the commitment of the community in the evolution and planning of their landscape, their habitat. And to develop a personal criteria towards the policies of urban planning, in general.

LUPERCALES
es un programa emprico acerca del diseo de iluminacin en reas urbanas que explora los mecanismos de participacin de las comunidades locales en el diseo de uso de los espacios pblicos. Realizamos intervenciones lumnicas para para proponer estrategias de reactivacin y puesta en valor del espacio pblico a travs de un diseo de iluminacin cuidadoso, enfocado en la singularidad y orientado a la percepcin. Nace en 2012 impulsado por tres diseadores independientes de iluminacin: Alberto Barber, Irene Bas y Paolo Portaluri. El proyecto combina activismo, pedagoga y accin directa en entornos urbanos, empleando para ello la iluminacin arquitectnica como una herramienta de cuestionamiento de los procesos de produccin y planificacin urbana. Nuestro objetivo es incorporar esta metodologa tctica, de intervencin rpida y ligera, a nuestros procesos de diseo de iluminacin de espacio pblico, centrados en el contexto social del proyecto y en construir ciudades mejores y ms habitables.

LUPERCALES
is an empirical programme around lighting design in urban areas and community engagement on designing the use of public spaces. We propose lighting interventions as a way to detect critical situations and develop test reactivation strategies for public spaces, through a perception-oriented lighting design, respectful of the singularity of each project. Born in 2012 as a collaboration between three independent lighting designers: Alberto Barber, Irene Bas and Paolo Portaluri. They combine activism, pedagogy and direct action in urban context, using architectural lighting as a tool for questioning the processes behind urban planning. During this last year, the research has been based in the interchange with communities and students through workshops and temporary interventions on public space. Our objective is to add the experience gained from these tactical actions to our professional practice, always focusing it in the peculiar social context of each project, looking for building better and more liveable cities.

Entendemos la educacin como una forma de produccin y distribucin de cultura para la transformacin social, como una forma de activismo, de desarrollo comunitario. Durante un taller, adems de exponer mediante conferencias el trabajo del diseo de iluminacin en entornos urbanos, surgen muchos temas que nos interesa experimentar sobre el terreno: la autogestin, la imagen nocturna de nuestras ciudades como parte de nuestro patrimonio visual, el especial tratamiento que requieren los proyectos singulares en los centros histricos y lugares pblicos... y sobrevuela un nimo, una motivacin: el enablement o empoderamiento del ciudadano como va para conseguir su implicacin y participacin en el diseo de su entorno y para el desarrollo de una conciencia crtica respecto a los temas de alumbrado urbano y planificacin urbanstica.

NUESTRO MTODO
INVESTIGACIN + EXPERIMENTACIN
Las intervenciones temporales permiten crear espacios de intercambio y relacin, que, aunque efmeros, pueden aportar informacin muy valiosa sobre el resultado de la aplicacin prctica de ciertos conceptos de diseo experimentales. Instalaciones efmeras, pero con un planteamiento de larga duracin: ideas que pueden transformarse en proyectos reales y procesos que puedan establecer una gua para los diseadores. Queremos aproximarnos al diseo de iluminacin del espacio pblico, del entorno urbano, desde el contexto, desde las personas, donde el diseador se incorpora a los procesos de transformacin como un mediador entre la comunidad y su entorno. Nuestro planteamiento es organizar workshops con grupos variados en conocimientos y puntos de vista, con el objetivo de una intervencin en espacios concretos. El proceso, los resultados, las mltiples miradas de los participantes son guardados como una coleccin de datos, croquis, imgenes y videos, material til para llegar a unas conclusiones desde la prctica y crear las bases para posteriores acciones e investigaciones. Queremos trasmitir la importancia de una buena iluminacin a las comunidades que viven los espacios pblicos, y al mismo tiempo proporcionar las herramientas terico-prcticas para disear el uso de dichos espacios segn las necesidades reales. Para esto es fundamental la trasmisin del conocimiento entre los varios actores que participan al proceso, y la creacin de lugares de encuentro entre administraciones, plataformas y asociaciones ccicas, tcnicos, diseadores y ciudadana.

OUR METHOD
RESEARCH + EXPERIMENTATION
Epehemeral interventions will allow us to create temporary spaces of communication and relationship that would give us access to the relevant information we need to face this work of planning, and to the results of our experimental proposals. Applying the urban tactics slogan short-term action for long-termchange, our installations are ephemeral in time, but focused to obtain a durable effect: ideas that can turn into real projects and processes that can serve as guide for lighting designers. We want to work from the context, from the conversation with people and their environment. Our approach is to organize workshop with mixed groups of participants from different backgrounds and points of view, with the objective of designing an intervention on a specific site. We record the analysis process, the results, the multiple views, as a collection of data, sketches, images, videos, useful material to get conclusions directly from the practice and to apply these conclusions to further actions and research. Our vision is to fundament a practice that would be part of our professional development as lighting designers. We want to make things with people to better communicate the importance of light to the communities, giving them the cultural tools and skills to understand, or even modify, the use of public space according to their real needs. For this reason, its very important for us to establish a method to impulse knowledge transfer among the various actors participating in the process, and a multi-disciplinary platform where administrations, citizens, technicians and designers would be able to meet.

PARC SENSE ILLUMINACI A LA NIT
JARDINS DE RUBI I LLUCH, RAVAL, BARCELONA, 11-15 de Febrero 2013 La intervencin se dise a lo largo de un workshop de 20 horas, con 30 participantes de diversas procedencias profesionales y acadmicas, muchos de ellos usuarios y conocedores del caso. Durante las sesiones se pudo realizar un anlisis del contexto social, urbanstico y arquitectnico del espacio a intervenir gracias a la colaboracin de agentes sociales del barrio y entidades como la Plataforma Tot Raval, el distrito de Ciutat Vella, la escola Massana o la compaa teatral La Perla 29. La premisa de diseo consista en la alteracin de la imagen nocturna del espacio durante una jornada cvica, donde ningn acontecimiento iba a producirse. Esta motivacin es doble: una luz que hable de s misma como poder revitalizador y dinamizador, generador de situaciones, y un tratamiento del entorno amable y respetuoso tanto con la arquitectura como con los usuarios. El lugar fue elegido por tratarse de un espacio pblico infrautilizado de noche con un gran potencial por su situacin, arquitectura y caractersticas, en el interior de un complejo hospitalario con origen en el siglo XV, junto a la Plaa de la Gardunya y entre las calles Carme y Hospital, en la frontera entre el Raval Nord y el Raval Sud.

PARC SENSE ILLUMINACI A LA NIT

RUBI I LLUCH GARDENS, RAVAL, BARCELONA, February 11-15, 2013 The intervention was planned in a collaborative manner through the 20-hour workhsop sessions, with the 30 participants from diverse professional and academic background,many of them users and regular visitors to the gardens. Along the sessions we could analyze the social, urban and architectural context of the place thanks to the collaboration and engagement of societies and entities from the neighbourhood as Tot Raval Foundation, Ciutat Vella district authorities and social workers, the Escola Massana design school and the theatre company La Perla 29, based in the facilities of the complex surrounding the gardens. The design hypothesis proposed a nocturnal image alteration, a slight distortion of the daily luminous ambient of the place, during an evening where no special activity or event was announced nor programmed. The light would talk about itself, as a means and as potential, as situation generator and space activator, with a kind treatment of the environment and the architecture of the place.

MUSEO MARTIMO, BARCELONA, 1 de Junio de 2013 Instalacin lumnica realizada dentro del marco de las fiestas del Para.lel i Raval, Fem Festa Junts, organizadas por el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona. Se realiz una accin nocturna, justo debajo de los Jardines del Baluard, que conectaba temporalmente la Avenida del Paralelo con la Plaza de Blanquerna, atravesando la muralla medieval por el Portal de Santa Madrona, antigua entrada a la ciudad. Los tonos azules de agua en el exterior y la calidez de las velas que invitaba al interior, dieron luz por unas horas a un paso que se encuentra cerrado al pblico.

MARITIME MUSEUM, BARCELONA, 1st of June 2013 Light installation carried out within the celebrations of Para.lel i Raval, Fem Festa Junts, organized by the cityhall of Barcelona. This night action was performed just below the Baluard Gardens, temporarily connecting the Parallel Avenue with the Blanquerna Square, crossing the medieval wall trough the Portal of Santa Madrona, ancient entrance of the city. The blue tones of water on the outside and the warmth of the candles, invited the people to go inside and for a few hours to walk over an access that is closed to the public.

STA ES UNA PLAZA, LAVAPIS, MADRID. Junio 2013 Este taller prctico de diseo de iluminacin de 20 horas form parte de las actividades del Master en Diseo de Iluminacin Arquitectnica de la ETSAM. El caso prctico para un proyecto de iluminacin de espacio pblico es un solar recuperado por los vecinos en el barrio de Lavapis y convertido en un parque pblico con huerto urbano, el proyecto sta es una plaza.

FABRA I COATS, BARCELONA, 21-25 Junio 2013 Este ambicioso workshop internacional de diseo se dedic a proporcionar una experiencia prctica y completa de diseo y planificiacin de iluminacin arquitectnica, de eventos y de espacio expositivo. El programa incluy 1.000 metros cuadrados de espacio expositivo, una plaza abierta, sala de conferencias, espacio de chill-out, los accesos al recinto y la imagen corporativa en fachadas. El taller fue organizado por el Postgrado de Diseo de Iluminacin de Elisava, Escuela Superior de Diseo e Ingeniera de Barcelona. Lupercales aport la experiencia y el know-how, y dirigi esta edicin del workshop dedicado a planificar la iluminacin del antiguo recinto industrial de Fabra i Coats para la celebracin del Festival Internacional de Arquitectura EME3.

FABRA I COATS, BARCELONA, 21-25 June 2013 This ambitious international workshop was dedicated to a practical experience of design and set-up of architectural, event and exhibition space lighting. The planning covered 1,000 sqm of exhibition space, an open square, conference room, chill-out space, accesses to the venue and corporate image of the facades. The workshop was organized by the postgraduate course in Lighting Design of Elisava, Barcelonas School of Design and Engineering. Lupercales was comissioned to deliver its know-how and experience, and the collective directed the workshop, dedicated to light up the facilities where the 2013 edition of EME3, International Architecture Festival, was programmed.
