Los participios pasados—past participles

Past participles serve 2 functions, one of which we’ll be looking at today.

The formation is simple:

AR verbs ER and IR verbs

drop –AR drop –ER / -IR

add –ADO add –IDO

hablado--spoken comido—eaten
estudiado--studied entendido—understood
tomado-taken, drank, eaten recibido--received
 Unas formas especiales
creer oír leer caer etc.

with 2 vowels, the “I” in –ido needs an

accent

creído oído leído caído

¡IR so regular it looks irregular!

drop the -IR

which gives you……nothing

add ido to that

the past participle of IR is….IDO

 Unas formas irregulares
abrir—abierto [opened] morir—muerto [died]

poner—puesto [put]
cubrir—cubierto
[covered]

decir—dicho [said] romper—roto [broken]

escribir –escrito [written] ver—visto [seen]

hacer—hecho—[done]
volver—vuelto [returned]
 ¡OJO!

A verb containing one of the

previous verbs within it will
share the same irregularity

describir—to describe—descrito

descubrir-to discover—descubierto

revolver—to revolve--revuelto
 These are used as adjectives
