amplitude The height of a wave measured from the top of its peak
to the bottom of its trough. It is an indicator of the strength of a

AMTRAK The AMerican TRavel trAcK (AMTRAK) is a longdistance rail passenger service operated by the U.S. government.
The government owns the engines and cars, but the rail lines are
privately owned. (Ch. 22)

beam bridge A type of bridge design in which the main spans are
supported by beams resting on piers. (Ch. 20)
bid The price quote that a contractor gives to the customer for the

foundation The part of a structure that rests upon the earth and

survey A drawing that shows the exact size and shape of the
piece of property, its position in relation to other properties and to
roads and streets, the height (elevation) of the property, and any
special land features (rivers, streams, hills, gullies, trees, etc.).
