Mi Historia

My History

Nac el 16 de mayo de 1974. Pocos aos despus empec a desear que la msica fuese parte de mi vida. La
primera cancin que cant fue Ramaya de Afric Simone, por suerte solo mi familia conserva la grabacin y me
he decidido a publicarla por primera vez porque a partir
de ah inicio todo. Mi padre, cantante y msico, me llevaba con l en sus noches de piano bar desde que tena 8
aos, no fue su voluntad la que le llevo a hacerlo, sino mi
insistencia. Entonces me toc atenerme a muchas reglas,
mis padres eran muy estrictos y es justo que as fuese.
Yo era realmente pequea, pero fui siempre diligente y
determinada y hoy en da esto es de gran ayuda en mi
vida y en mi trabajo. Con 12 aos escrib mi primera
cancin. Con 16 aos cante sola por vez primera, con
las bases, en Boloa (Italia) en un restaurante. Con 18
aos me lleg una oportunidad nica: El Festival de
San Remo en Italia y una cancin que sera mi espejo
durante el resto de mi vida: La Soledad.

I was born on 16th May 1974. A few years later I decided I wanted music to play a big part in my life.
The first song I sang was Ramaya by Afric Simone,
which (luckily) only my family has a recording of.
Ive decided to release it now, for the very first time on
this album. This song is how everything began. My dad,
a singer and musician, started taking me along to his
piano bar evenings when I was 8, not because he made
me go, but because I made him take me. At the time
I had to respect a whole bunch of rules as my parents
were very strict, and rightly so. I was very young but
have always been diligent and determined in what I do.
I wrote my first song when I was 12. At 16 I performed
for the first time alone one evening, with some backing
tracks, in a restaurant in Bologna. At 18 I was given a
unique opportunity: the Sanremo Music Festival and
a song which is and always will be like looking in the
mirror for me: La Solitudine.

Hace veinte aos.
Al ao siguiente comenc a cantar en espaol y os lo
juro nunca hubiese podido imaginar el estar hoy
aqu presentndoos un disco lleno de canciones que me
habis dado el privilegio de convertir en xitos. Para mi
este disco no habla de un resultado, sino de un tramo
ms del camino que quisiera seguir haciendo durante
muchos aos junto a vosotros. He credo en un sueo.
Y he hecho bien en hacerlo. Gracias este sueo
estando sola no vala para nada.

this as an album about an end result, but rather another

Mi primera cancin. El inicio de mi carrera en Italia

y despus, inesperadamente, en el resto del mundo.


Empec a darme a conocer hablando de mi vida,
de Marco y del tren de las 07.30 que tomaba en
la pequea estacin de Solarolo (RA), donde nac,
para ir a la escuela de arte de Faenza (RA) donde
estudie durante 5 aos. Tena 18 aos y hablaba
de la soledad como la estaba conociendo, melanclicamente, como muchos otros adolescentes.
Para efectuar los arreglos de esta cancin haca
falta un genio, alguien que pudiese convertirla en
una pelcula, y no dude en contactarlo porque yo
soaba con esta colaboracin desde haca aos
no me esperaba que un da se volviese realidad y
por esto sigo pensando que el hecho de no tener

My first song. The beginning of my career in Italy and


then, unexpectedly, the rest of the world. I began to get
recognition as a singer by talking about my life, about Marco
and the 7.30am train I used to catch from the little station in
Solarolo (Ravenna) where I was born, to get to the art school
in Faenza (Ravenna) where I studied for 5 years. I was 18 and
talked about loneliness because sadly, like many teenagers,
thats what I was experiencing at the time. I knew itd take
a genius to arrange this song, someone whod manage to
turn it into a film and had no doubt who that person would
be. Although Id dreamed of working with him for years
I never expected my dream to come true. But it did, which

con l, en su casa, y con la msica. Y me dijo que s.
Solo puedo decir que los grandes artistas saben ser
tambin grandes personas cuando no estn sobre
el escenario. Seguramente, cuando l me dice que
se siente honrado por trabajar conmigo, no se est
dando cuenta de que l ES la msica. Y yo soy solo
una cantante que esta vez canta una cancin suya,
junto a l, y de que el honor es mo.

Ennio Morricone, a name and a man the world envies Italy
for. I contacted him one afternoon in March to ask for an
appointment and he told me to ring back very early the
morning of the 25th to make arrangements. That afternoon
I was with him, in his life, with his music. And he said yes!
All I can say is that great artists are extraordinary people even
when theyre not on stage. When he said he was honoured to
be working with me he clearly didnt realize that he IS music.
And Im just a singer. A singer whos singing her first song
again, and is immensely honoured to be doing so with him.

escrita por dos chicos de Miln que escriben msica
como hobby increble ni siquiera me conocan
y supieron describir el momento que estaba viviendo. La versin original, que supuso un gran xito en
versin espaola, tiene un ritmo completamente diferente. Tambin tena un deseo con respecto a esta
cancin, poderla realizar y cantar con un artista que
se ha convertido en un amigo y que es una fuerza de
la naturaleza: Marc Anthony. Le dije:Marc, quiero
que sea como t! Latina! Quiero salsa hermano!
Y el: I would LOVE to, mama! It would be my
HONOR!!! And that happens to be my favourite
song. En fin nosotros nos hemos divertido mucho y esta nueva versin es increble!
Like La solitudine, this song was also penned by a couple
of guys from Milan whose hobby is writing music. It was
incredible, they didnt even know me and yet they were able
to describe what I was going through at the time. The original
version has a completely different beat and the Spanish one
we did was a huge success. I had hopes for this song, too,
and wanted to produce and sing it with an American whos
become a friend and is quite simply a force of nature: Marc
Anthony. I told him: Marc, I want the song to be like you,
Latino! Quiero salsa hermano! (I want salsa, brother). And
he replied:Id LOVE to, mama! It would be my HONOR!!!
And that happens to be my favourite song. Well... we had
a lot of fun working together and this new version is crazy!

Qu cancin tan bonita! me gustaba por aquel


entonces y me gusta ahora. Rebosa alegra, fuerza y

que an no conoca! La versin que hemos hecho
est inspirada en Irlanda, una tierra con mucho
significado y con una msica abrumadora, como
quera que fuese mi nueva Gente.
What an extraordinary song! I liked it when I first recorded
it and still do, enormously. Its full of joy, strength and
determination - very me.
My friends Paola&Chiara make an appearance in the
original video clip, although I didnt know them at the
time!
The version weve arranged was inspired by Ireland, a land
full of meaning and captivating music, just like I wanted
the new version of Gente to be.

A hora os puedo hablar de las coincidencias de la

vida!Haba ganado el Festival de San Remo el ao


anterior y esto me permita volver a participar en
la categora Big! Tena una cancin que les gustaba
mucho, se llamaba Una vita migliore (Una vida
mejor). Estaba persuadida de que aquella cancin
era perfecta para m pero sin ni siquiera buscarla
llego Amores Extraos.
La primera vez que la escuche estaba en la casa
que despus se convirti en mi fan club y donde
por aquel entonces pasaba muchas horas leyendo
y contestando a las cartas que reciba de parte de
personas que me hablaban como si yo fuese su
novia, su hermana, su amiga y que me contaban
sus vidas y sus Amores Extraos.
Now let me tell you about a few of the coincidences that
happened around this song. Having won the 1993 Sanremo
Music Festival, it was my right to enter the Big Artists
category the following year. I had a song I adored called Una
vita migliore and was adamant it was the perfect song for
me, portraying what I was feeling at the time. Then Strani
Amori turned up, without me even looking for it.
The first time I listened to this song I was in the house
that had become my fan club and where I spent hours and
hours reading and answering the letters people sent me,
writing to me as if I were their girlfriend, sister, daughter...
telling me about their lives and their Strani Amori (literally,

una cancin a quienes me queran sin ni siquiera
conocerme. As que llame a mi manager y le dije:
Voy a San Remo con Amores Extraos!.
Han pasado muchos aos pero os quera dar las gracias a vosotros por haber hecho que tenga la suerte
de elegir esta cancin.
N.B. la cancin que tendra que haber cantado la
canto al final otra cantante, sin ni siquiera preguntarme si yo quera hacerlo y sufr por ello; pero
el destino hizo que as fuesen las cosas y no puedo
quejarme!

dedicating a song to those who were fond of me without
really knowing me. I called my manager and said Im
going to Sanremo with Strani Amori. Many years have
passed since then but I want to thank you for supporting
the choice I made.
N.B. The song I was originally going to sing was given to
another performer and I wasnt even asked if I wanted to do
it. Although this really upset me at the time, it was clearly
the hand of fate and Im certainly not complaining now!

Siempre hay alguien a quien dedicrsela.
Son pocas las personas que se han dado cuenta de
que esta cancin habla de soledad, una palabra y
una sensacin que siempre me ha dado miedo y
esto me ha llevado a enfrentarme a ella en numerosas ocasiones con mi msica.

He cantado esta cancin en tres idiomas y he
decidido incluirla aqu con en una versin indita
italiano/portugus compartiendo la voz y la amistad
con Ivete Sangalo. Una reina. Una voz nica. Una
amiga que entiende muy bien Las cosas que vivo.

I remember how cold it was on the mountain top in Iceland where we filmed the video for this song. I was alone,
with a helicopter flying over my head and a camera filming
me while I sang never leave me.
There is always someone or something to dedicate a
song to, but only a few people have realised that this ones
about loneliness, a word and feeling that have always scared
me which is why Ive sung about it so many times. I still
adore singing Incancellabile today, although something inside mes changed.

This is one of my favourite songs. It was produced when


I started writing lyrics (which I was actually doing earlier
but wasnt allowed to sign them ) and the person who
encouraged me was the main character of this song about
friendship: Cheope.
I sang it in three languages and decided to include an unpublished italian/portuguese version of it here, singing with
my friend Ivete Sangalo, a true queen of Brazilian music.
A unique voice and a friend who really understands what
I go through.

Estaba buscando nuevas canciones para el disco,

tena unas ganas terribles de volver a cantar


Recuerdo que mi corista Emanuela Cortesi me
llamo y me dijo: Laura hay un autor al que tienes
que prestar atencin, su cancin es preciosa.
Tenia razn, llore escuchndola y le dedique el texto a mi hermana que en aquel momento viva una
situacin muy dolorosa. Creo que an hoy en da es
una de mis canciones ms bonitas en todas y cada
una de las versiones en las que la he interpretado.

I was looking for new songs for my album and was dying
to sing again I remember that my choralist, Emanuela
Cortesi, called me and said: Laura, theres a writer you just
HAVE to listen to, his song is simply beautiful.
She was right. I cried when I heard it and dedicated the
lyrics to my sister who was going through a really difficult
patch at the time. I still think its one of my best songs, in
all the versions Ive sung.

Mi Respuesta cuando recib una llamada de


David Foster. Casi me desmayo. El crea que haba
llegado el momento de trabajar juntos seriamente
y me dijo que tena una cancin que se adaptaba
bien a m, escrita por Richard Marx y que formara
parte de la banda sonora de la pelcula Mensaje en
una botella con Kevin Costner. En ese momento
no hable y pens en el lugar en el que nac, me
volv a desmayar y solo despus recupere el habla
para preguntarle cuando tena que ir a verle, el me
contesto: La grabacin es maana en Los ngeles.
Tena fiebre y un miedo increble. Pero a la tarde del
da siguiente all estaba, con l, cantando en vivo
y en directo con la orquesta que diriga el propio
William Ross. Una experiencia escalofriante.
I was in Argentina promoting my La mia risposta album
when I got a call from David Foster. I honestly thought Id
pass out! He said hed decided that the time had come for
us to do some serious work together and told me he had a
song that would suit me, written by Richard Marx for the
soundtrack to Message in a bottle with Kevin Costner.
I was speechless, started thinking about the tiny little
village Id been born in, almost passed out again and
then somehow manage to find my voice and ask him
where we could meet. Were recording in Los Angeles
tomorrow, he told me. I had a temperature and was soooo
scared, but the following afternoon I was there with him,
singing live with an orchestra conducted by William Ross.
It was an extraordinary experience.

Its given me so much and enabled me to travel around the
world on an incredible, and really long, tour.
It was written by Daniel Vuletic, whos helped me put my
feelings into words many times. It talks about what would
have happened in my private life a few months after the
song had been released, when I made a mistake.

The song came before this mistake, which freaked me


out a bit. The video was filmed by Gabriele Muccino and
his brother, Silvio. I felt as if I were part of them for a few
days and it was a bit surreal too, to be honest, because I felt
like an actress. A beautiful experience.

Q u historia tan larga la de esta cancin! Intentare ser lo ms concisa posible a pesar de no ser
una de mis cualidades :-) Los jefes de Warner en
Amrica llevaban aos pidindome que cantase en
ingles pero yo no me senta preparada, antes o despus tena que encontrar el tiempo necesario para
estudiar bien el idioma. No me gusta hacer las cosas
a la ligera e imaginarme en la televisin americana sin entender ni poder expresarme me resultaba
vergonzoso. En 2002 pase muchos meses en Los
ngeles. Por la maanas a las 7 iba a la escuela y
fue una experiencia maravillosa el volver a empezar
todo desde el principio Recuerdo que algunos
amigos y colegas me decan: quin te obliga?
Yo tena ganas de aprender, de volver a empezar, de
entender muchas cosas. Durante un ao busque
canciones con la ayuda de los productores americanos del disco. Mientras grababa fui feliz por lo que
estaba haciendo (en mi opinin el disco era precioso) y esperaba con todo mi corazn que eligiesen

trataba de una cancin que ya haba publicado en
italiano y espaol y que me representaba completamente, en ingles tambin me gustaba mucho.
Me dijeron que no, porque el tema era demasiado

pasa?. Lo entend un poco ms tarde, ellos me


queran pero transformndome en una artista ms
young, probablemente sin considerar que yo ya
haba elegido mi recorrido artstico desde haca aos.
Un da el gran jefe me llamo y me dijo: Hemos
elegido el primer single, te lo mando esta tarde y
maana ya podrs cantarlo. Ya estbamos mixando
el resto del disco. Escuche la cancin Surrender
y pens que podra ser muy bonita cantada ms
lenta Pero no fue as, sino al contrario, Surrender
sali en versin Remix y llego incluso hasta las tres
primeras posiciones de la dance chart en Amrica.
Para muchos pudo ser una gran felicidad, pero yo
me sent ajena a todo aquello que no era ni soy.
Hable con la casa discogrfica de aquel entonces que
me contesto que para ellos era lgico que continuase
por esa direccin visto el xito del primer single. As
que prepare mi maleta en el hotel de NYC y tome el
primer avin de vuelta a Italia. Tome una decisin,
muy seria, y que algunos crean equivocada, pero
no lo fue para mi dignidad y el respeto que debo y
quiero tenerle a quien me ha dado una carrera desde
1993 con el tipo de msica que a m me gusta hacer.
Esta nueva versin refleja el modo en el que hubiese
querido que la gente escuchase la cancin en el disco
en ingls. Ahora juzgadla vosotros.

This song has a long story! Ill try and be as brief as possible
although its not one of my strong points. :-)
The bosses at Warner Bros. America had been asking me
to sing in English for a few years, but I just wasnt ready.
I had to find the time to study the language well first cause I
hate sloppiness and even the thought of being on TV in the
US without understanding or being able to make myself
understood was embarrassing!
I spent several months in Los Angeles in 2002 and for two
of them went to school every morning at 7am. It turned
out to be an amazing experience as I literally started from
scratch I remember a few friends and colleagues saying
whatever are you doing that for? but I wanted to learn,
to try, to understand.
I spent a year looking for songs with the help of an A&R
(Artists and Repertoire division) from New York and the
American producers of the disc. I was happy to record
what I was working on (I think its a great album) and
sincerely hoped Warner would choose Its not goodbye as
the first single, as Id already released the song in Italian and
Spanish and it really portrays me as I am. Its just wonderful
in English.
They said no,because the song would appeal to an adult
audience rather than the one they wanted to target and
I thought to myself So? Whats the harm in that?.

I understood a little too late. They wanted me, but were


trying to get me to play to a younger audience. Theyd
probably not taken into account the fact that Id chosen
how I wanted my career to go a good many years before.
One day the big boss called me and said, Weve got the first
single. Ill send it over this afternoon and you can sing it
tomorrow. We were already mixing the rest of the album. I
listened to Surrender and thought how wonderful it would
be if it were slower but thats not how it went.
The remix of Surrender was released and went to top
three in the American dance charts. I talked it over with the
music label I was with at the time and they told me they

So I headed back to the hotel I was staying at in NYC
packed my bags and took the first flight back to Italy.
I made my choice, a tough one and maybe the wrong one
for a number of years. However, it was the right one as
far as my dignity was concerned, and the respect I had
and wanted to show those whod followed my career since
1992 with the kind of music I love doing. This new version
mirrors how Id have wanted to do it in English.

A whole bunch of things happened in 2004 I was angry,
terrified, lost, needing love, affection and confidence in my
ability. For the first time ever I produced an album on my
own, deciding just to go with my instinct and heart without

what was going to happen and was scared.
Then Biagio Antonacci turned up again. This time he came
to my studio and didnt have a guitar with him. Instead, he

A lucky year after a very painful one. I was in Los Angeles
and one of my producers told me he had this interesting
song in English for me. I headed over to his studio and
he put on Like a flower. I immediately recognized
Madonnas voice, looked at him in surprise. He told me,
Madonna wants someone to sing this in Spanish or
Italian and I think youre the right person to do it.
I cant describe the expression on my face nor how fast my
heart started beating. But I can tell you this, being the truly
amazing woman she is, Madonna gave me the freedom
to write exactly what I wanted. She didnt force me to do
anything. While I write these words I wonder, once again,
if it really happened!

Barilla, que an hoy es una de las personas que

Grabamos un anuncio para el da de la mujer y se
transmiti en la televisin italiana la semana del 8
de marzo. Me pidi que pensase en una cancin y
se me ocurri She. Mi idea fue dedicar la cancin
a mi madre.

I met Luca Barilla through friends. Still today hes one of the
people in Italy I hold in the very highest esteem because of
the father he is and for that which he and his family humbly
create day after day. He showed me everything his father Pietro and the great singer Mina made together and confided
that he wanted to recreate those very special moments with
me. We recorded an advert for International Womens Day
aired on Italian TV in the week around the 8th of March. He
asked me to think of a song and She sprang to mind. My
idea was to dedicate the track to my Mum.

Its an amazing track and was produced by the legendary
Phil Ramone, who passed away this year and was incredibly fond of me. Whenever we met hed say go on... sing
me something even if its just ciao! I met him through
Luciano Pavarotti, another musical love of my life. In 2005,
Phil rang me and said: Ray Charles family has asked me to
contact you to see if youd like to record a duet I look up
and say to god: Well you totally rock! and of course
the answer was yes, Id very much like to record a duet...
right now! This kind of music isnt like mine at all, which is
something I adore as my best duets have always been with
singers whose music is different to mine.

Ive got loads of them myself, so I thought Id bring a few

listened to it on the radio, I said to myself I want to sing

I imagined how my Dad would feel, hearing his daughter singing with his idol and felt I couldnt have given
him a bigger gift. Singing tenderly, I really put my heart
into this song and during the process Charles became an
even bigger icon for me. When I was on tour I sang it a few

something was missing, something encompassing colour and
