4 Conclusiones

material basltico y potentes niveles ignimbrticos cidos,

finalmente en el lugar de emplazamiento (Bergantz, 2000;
(Figura 1): Zona Gabro-Diortica (GDZ), Zona Tonaltica
(TZ) y Zona Granodiortica (GZ).

10Hz. Realizado en State Key of Laboratory of
Continental Dynamics, Northwest University, Xian,
China.

tonaltica a grantica.

poca extensin, cuyas edades radiomtricas corresponden
al Cretcico Superior (entre otros, Martin et al., 1999;
evidenciado por dataciones radiomtricas (Gonzlez, 1982;
Munizaga et al., 1988; Sernageomin-BRGM, 1995; Surez
y Emparn, 1997).
presentan textura preferencialmente pofdica.
plagioclasa usualmente zonada, ortoclasa perttica, cuarzo,
anfbol y biotita, y menores cantidades de minerales
opacos, apatito y circn. En los microgranitos se
desarrollan localmente las texturas microgrfica,
granofrica y mirmequtica.

Abstract. The central-southern Coastal Batholith between
latitudes 33and 40 South is composed of calc-alkaline
granitoids emplaced in a relative restricted time period.
New SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages on eight granitic-toquartzdioritic rocks collected over a distance of 800 km
yielded ages between 301 to 320 Ma, Late Carboniferous.
Lu-Hf isotopic analyses on the same zircon grains have

initial
Hf/ Hf isotope ratios in a narrow range from
0.282427 to 0.282635 with Hf(i) values from +1.67 to 18
5.64. The O ratios for the same zircon grains range from
6.4 to 8.6. These new isotope data point to a relative
homogeneous source with prominent components of the
continental crust. The calculated Mesoproterozoic model
ages in addition to the short span of intrusive ages give
insights to the position of the proto-Gondwana margin and
the changing subduction mechanism at the end of late
Paleozoic time.

1 Introduction
The central-southern Coastal Cordillera between latitudes
33S and 40S is composed of an accretionary
metamorphic complex on the western side starting from
34S, with the Coastal Batholith to the east between 33S
and 3820S, but at 40S further stepping in board to
within the Principal Cordilleran range (Figure 1). The
Coastal Batholith is comprises calc-alkaline granitoids
formed during late Paleozoic time, mainly between 319282 Ma (Rb-Sr, K-Ar and U-Pb geochronology; e.g.,
Cordani et al., 1976; Herv et al., 1976, 1988; Martin et al.,
1999). This batholith constitutes a major morphologic
feature of the proto-Pacific at the Gondwana margin.
The aim of this study is to give new insights into the
elongated Coastal Batholith through U-Pb gochronology,
Lu-Hf and O isotope geochemistry on identical spots on
zircon grains selected from distinct portions of the Coastal
Batholith.

2.1 Methods
Zircon grains were separated from total rock samples using
standard crushing, washing, heavy liquids, and
paramagnetic procedures. The U-Th-Pb analyses were
made using SHRIMP II at the Research School of Earth
Sciences, The Australian National University, Canberra,
Australia, following procedures given in Williams (1998,
and references therein). Oxygen isotope analyses were
made using the RSES SHRIMP II fitted with a Cs source
and electron gun for charge compensation following
methods described by Ickert et al. (2008). The oxygen
isotope analyses were then made on exactly the same
location used for the U-Pb analyses. Lu-Hf isotopic
measurements were conducted by laser ablation
multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass
spectroscopy (LA-MC-ICPMS) using the RSES Neptune
MC-ICPMS coupled with a 193 nm ArF Excimer laser;
similar to procedures described in Munizaga et al. (2008).
Laser ablation analyses were performed on the same
locations within single zircon grains used for both the UPb and oxygen isotope analyses. All isotope analyses are
undertaken at the Research School of Earth Sciences, The
Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.

1 Introduction
There are several studies which argue for a direct relation
between the magmatism in Patagonia and the subduction
of the Chile spreading ridge and the opening of a slab
window (e.g. Gorring et al. 1997, DOrazio et al. 2004,
Russo et al. 2010). However, the mechanism and the
petrogenesis to interpret the available geochemical and
geochronological data are still matter of discussion.
Studies discussing the effects of ridge subduction focused
on Cenozoic plateau lavas (Ramos and Kay 1992, Gorring
et al. 1997, Gorring and Kay 2001, DOrazio et al. 2004,
Guivel et al. 2006); and only few authors emphasized the
similarities between the Patagonian plateau basalts and
some of the Miocene granitic intrusions (Leuthold et al.
2012a, Welkner 1999, Michael 1984). Such similarities are
crucial to establish a new petrogenetic-tectonic model,
since the Miocene plutons represent the link between the
calc-alkaline magmatism, related to the Patagonian
batholith, and the alkaline plateau basalt in the retro-arc.
348
4 Petrogenetic interpretations
4.1 Previous models
3 Geochemical trends
To explain this chemical evolution previous studies have
focused on the chemistry of Cenozoic plateau basalts and
its chronological coincidence with the subduction of
different segments of the Chile ridge. Based on K/Ar data
it has been proposed that these basalts are not necessary
related to the subduction of the Chile ridge (Charrier et al.
1979). In contrast, Ramos and Kay (1992), Gorring et al.
(1997), Gorring and Kay (2001) and Guivel et al. (2006)
proposed different models that suggest the mixing of
magmas derived from the sub-slab region with normal arc
related magmas.
A tentative correlation between the position of the slabwindow and position and age exists for the post-plateau
basalts (e.g. Russo et al. 2010), but the important problem
is that the main-plateau lavas erupted before the opening
of the presumed slab window.
At latitudes of ca. 49S, Ramos & Kay (1992) and Gorring
et al. (1997) proposed a model where sub-slab magmas
flowed around the trailing edge of the descending Nazca
plate. These magmas interact with the oceanic crust
(thermal erosion) resulting in an intermediate composition
between OIB-type and arc-related magmas.

The SiO2 content of the volcanic rocks ranges from 43.6%
to 79.8% with gaps between 49.4-57.7% and 64.8-72.6%
suggesting a basalt-trachyte-rhyolite composition. Total
alkali content is usually high except for rhyolites which
plot in the subalkaline field. Shands index shows the
basalts to be metaluminous whereas rhyolites are
peraluminous and trachytes plot next to the peralkaline
field. Basalts show high Fe2O3 and TiO2 contents and
relatively low Mg number, typical of evolved magmas.
Low Ni and Cr concentrations are also consistent with this
interpretation and could indicate the fractionation of
olivine and clinopyroxene, respectively. Basalt samples
show high lithophile elements (LILE) content and slight
negative Th and Sr anomalies. The trachytes and rhyolites
are also LILE-enriched but they have pronounced negative
Ba, Sr, P and Ti anomalies. Some trace elements diagrams
(e.g., Nb-Ta; Zr-Hf, YbN-CeN) show colinear relationships
between basalts and trachytes suggesting a source or
parental magma with the same trace element ratios. The
rare earth element (REE) patterns are LREE-enriched with
negative Eu anomalies in the most differentiated rocks
suggesting plagioclase fractionation during the early stages
of crystallization. Heavy REE depletion (SmN/YbN > 2)
observed in basalts suggests a garnet-bearing mantle
source. This interpretation is consistent with the obtained
isotopic data. Basalt samples have Nd(t) values ranging
from +2.5 to +3.8, with an average of +3.1 while trachytes
and rhyolites show slightly lower Nd(t) average values of
+2.2 and 0 respectively. This suggests crustal
contamination for the more felsic rocks. However, the
obtained isotope values are higher compared with the
basement of western Gondwana which shows strongly
negative Nd values. Calculated Nd model ages (TDM)
range from 0.68 to 1.1 Ga and also more crustal
contamination or melting of old crust to form felsic
magmas. In contrast, Sr isotope data appear to have been
thermally reset as suggested by a younger isochron and
unrealistic 87Sr/86Sr ratios observed in felsic rocks.
1 Introduction
The western margin of South America is a classic example
of an accretionary orogen. Throughout its protracted
history alternating periods of extension and compression
are recorded (Haschke et al., 2006). Extensional
accretionary orogeny occurs when coupling between the
two plates is low (Collins, 2002). Magmatism is a useful
tool for identifying older extensional events. NW
Argentina preserves a major magmatic event of
Mississippian age whose origin is discussed (e.g., Grosse

This contribution presents new geochemical and isotopic
data for Mississippian volcanic rocks exposed in the
southern Puna region. The studied section is located in Las
Peladas area (27 01'54 "S - 67 04'16" W) where
Mississippian volcanics are ~1500 m thick. A rhyolite
sample provided a U-Pb zircon age of 336 Ma (Martina
and Astini, 2009). The base of the section is not exposed
but 20 km further south the volcanic succession rests
directly on basement rocks. The top is covered by Early

Introduction
The Sierras de Crdoba which are made of a series of
north-south mountain chains, comprise polyphasially
deformed late Precambrian to early Palaeozoic
metamorphic rocks and Ediacaran to early Palaeozoic
granitoids, imbricated by contractional middle OrdovicianSilurian and late Devonian-Carboniferous ductile shear
zones. The polymetamorphic complexes are organized in a
series of lithological and structural domains (Fig. 1): Sierra
Chica (SCH), Sierra Grande (SG) and Sierra de
Comechingones (SCM) separated by ductile shear zones
and mafic and ultramafic rocks (Siegesmund et al., 2009
and references therein). The domains are characterised by
Ediacarian sedimentation and Cambrian deformation,
magmatism and metamorphism with a more restricted
Ordovician magmatic event (Rapela et al. 1998,
Siegesmund et al. 2009) and voluminous intrusions of
Devonian granitoids. Mafic-ultramafic units which trend
N350 to 40 and dip between 50-70 E were separated into
an eastern belt in the SC and a western belt in the SG
(Escayola et al. 1996). Some of these belts were interpreted
as ophiolites (Mutti 1987, Escayola et al. 1996).
353
Sm-Nd results for the mafic-ultramafic rocks are heterogeneous which is evident from the wide range in Sm/Nd
isotopic compositions, with Nd(540 Ma) ranging from 6.37
to +7 and 147Sm/144Nd ranging from 0.09 to 0.3.
Consequently an ample range of TDM ages were calculated.

1 Introduccin
emplazados y xenolitos mantlicos. Los primeros incluyen
macizos peridotticos, complejos ofiolticos y peridotitas
hipoabisales.

Abstract. A comprehensive study of mica schist and
amphibolite samples from the Limon Verde Metamorphic
Complex (LVMC) involving petrography, geochemistry,
geochronology and geothermobarometry: has been
performed in order to create a pressure-temperature-time
history of the complex. The late Palaeozoic evolution of the
western margin of Gondwana where the LVMC is set
remains unclear. Nevertheless results from this study
indicate clockwise paths and temperature and pressure
ranges between 550-660 C and 7.5- 14.4 kbar for a main
metamorphic event at 280 1.8 Ma (U-Pb zircon), but with
remnants of ultra-high-pressure mineralogy (17.3 kbar.
equivalents to 60 km depth) from a possible previous event
at 377 12 Ma (Sm-Nd garnet).
1 Introduction
The Limon Verde Metamorphic Complex (LVMC) consists
of a series of interleaved sequences of mica schists,
amphibolites, gneisses and quartzites, located in the northwestern part of the Sierra of the same name. The complex
also has associated meta-conglomerates in the southeastern portion of the Sierra, but the foci of this study are
set on foliated metamorphic rocks containing garnet and
white mica.

1 Introduccin

1 Introduction
Geochemical behavior of arc-related volcanic rocks
provides information about tectonic conditions beneath
active volcanic arcs. These tectonic processes have strong
influence on genesis, evolution and final products of the
resulting volcanic rocks. During the Oligocene (~24 Ma) a
volcanic arc developed along the Andean margin, and a
concomitant magmatic activity was almost continuous
until Upper Miocene when volcanism ended due to the
shallowing of downgoing slab, over the present Pampean
flat slab segment of the Southern Central Andes (Ramos et
al., 1989; Kay et al., 1987, 1991; Kay and Mpodozis,
2002). A peak of this arc volcanism is well represented in
the Valle del Cura region (2930-30 SL), in the Frontal
Cordillera of San Juan province, in the Argentine slope. It
corresponds to andesitic to dacitic lava flows of Lower to
Middle Miocene age, included in the Cerro de las Tortolas
Formation (Maksaev et al. 1984, Kay et al., 1987, 1991).
Two levels within the unit are distinguished based on
petrographical, chemical and age differences: a
basandesitic to andesitic Lower Section and an andesitic to
dacitic Upper Section (Maksaev et al., 1984; Martin et al.,
1997, Ramos et al. 1989; Kay et al., 1987, 1991; Bissig et
al. 2001; Litvak et al. 2005, 2007).

1 Introduction
The nunatak Viedma constitute a hard to access outcrop of
rocks located at 4922SL 7319WL in the eastern flank of
the Southern Patagonian Ice Field (Figure 1). Up to know
there has been a discussion about its geological origin and
composition, fired by its inaccessibility and the lack of
proper fieldwork. The nunatak Viedma was first interpreted
as a volcanic complex by Lliboutry (1956), after the study
of aerial photographs showing a landscape that resemble
that of a small cluster of volcanic cones (Figure 1). Soon
after, Shipton et al. (1959) undertook a field exploration of
the nunatak, and arrived to the conclusion that was a
basement block.
2 Observations
2.1 Petrographical Analysis
The outcrops show sedimentary heterolitic units that could
be assigned to turbiditic sequences, and are strongly
affected by isoclinal folding. The studied samples display
different metamorphic degrees. Most of them can be
classified as gneiss or schist due to their macroscopic
textures (Figure 2 and 3).
374
3 Conclusions
Field-based observations
Morphology of the nunatak is largely controlled by
glaciary processes. The basement outcrops are partially
covered with coarse glacial drift, from pebble to boulder
size. In elevated, flat areas, there are structures associated
with periglacial environments, particularly patterned
ground.

secuencia.

1 Introduction
The Kranck pluton (KP) is a small (<10 km2), subcircular,
epizonal intrusive body exposed at the northern shore of
Lago Fagnano, in Sierra de Beauvoir, Tierra del Fuego.
The intrusive body is hosted in the pelite/mudstone
sequence of the Lower Cretaceous Beauvoir Formation
(Fig. 1B).
Figure 1. A) General map showing the tract of MagallanesFagnano Fault System (MFS) in central Tierra del Fuego; star
indicates the Kranck pluton location. B) Geological sketch
depicting the main structures and units in the area of Kranck
Pluton (KP) within the fold-and-thrust Fuegian belt, overprinted
by strike-slip structures.
The KP is located within the Fuegian thin-skinned foldthrust belt, the intrusive body is flanked by two major
structures: a low angle NNE verging thrust (belonging to
the main stack of Fuegian Cordillera thrust front at the
boundary with the Magellan foreland) in the north, and the
eastern tip of the M. Hope-Catamarca-fault segment
belonging to the Magallanes-Fagnano Fault System, at the
south (Fig. 1B; Menichetti et al., 2008).

2 Thermal modeling
Thermal modeling, following the observed geological
features and with reasonable assumptions magma and
country rock properties, helps to understand the geologic
history of intrusivecountry rock system and has to be
used only as an approximation to the real behavior of the
system. The conductive cooling model used here only
applies to static, or motionless, magma bodies and do not
consider heat transfer facilitated by fluid circulation.
Nevertheless, it is useful as a preliminary scenario against
which to evaluate thermal histories of more dynamic
advective and convective systems where movement of
liquids facilitates heat transfer. The cooling model attempts
to estimate the highest temperature reached in the country
rock at the emplacement depth.

Abstract. The La Pampa Gneisses (LPG) form a small
outcrop of leucocratic gneisses embedded within the late
Paleozoic-Triassic Chollay Batholith to the east of Vallenar
(Chile). The LPG was previously considered one of the few
preserved remnants of the Chilenia basement (accreted to
the Gondwana margin in the Devonian). Zircons collected
from these rocks show inherited cores with highly variable
U/Pb ages and two principal peak of ca. 301 Ma,
interpreted as the age of zircons in the protolith; and a
younger peak at ca. 263 Ma, probably record the age of a
metamorphic episode, related to a regional Permian
intrusion event. Calculated P-T conditions show that peak
conditions took place at ca. 780 C and 5.3 kbar. These
new data indicate that the LPG were emplaced and
metamorphosed during the late Paleozoic, attesting that
they are not relicts of the Chilenia basement.
1 Introduction
During most part of the Paleozoic a variety of allocthonous
terranes (Pampia, Famatina, Arequipa-Antofalla and
Cuyania) were amalgamated to the stable Ro de la Plata
and Amazonia cratons (Fig. 1). The latest terrane to
become part of Gondwana was the hypotetical Chilenia
terrane (Ramos et al., 1986; Fig. 1), which accreted to the
western margin during the Devonian (ca. 395 Ma; Davis et
al., 2000; Willner et al., 2011). However, unlike other
terranes such as Pampia or Cuyania (Ramos, 2009; 2010),
the outcrops attributed to Chilenia are scarce and there is
no direct evidence for its original affiliation. The
Guarguaraz Complex, that occur close to Mendoza,
Argentina (Fig.1) has been interpreted as an acretionary
wedge developed between Chilenia and Cuyania during
the Devonian (Willner et al., 2011 and references therein).
Chilenia seems to have bounded to the west by late
Paleozoic subduction originated after its collision with
Gondwana (Herv, 1988; Fig. 1), which probably include
the El Trnsito Metamorphic Complex located in the
Frontal Cordillera, east of Vallenar (Ribba et al, 1988;
lvarez et al., 2011).

1 Introduction
Alkaline volcanic rocks of assumed Early Triassic age
overlie and/or intrude the Proterozoic-Lower Palaeozoic
high-grade crystalline basement of the Sierra de Valle
Frtil, Western Sierras Pampeanas, province of San Juan,
Argentina. The main outcrops are found on both sides of
the Estancia Quiroga-Los Bretes depression, a NW-SE
belt of ca. 30 km in length and up to 4 km wide limited
by normal faults. Minor outcrops have been recognized
within the range. These rocks evidence a compositional
spectrum ranging from basalt and trachybasalt flows,
associated with coeval intermediate phonolite and
trachyte bodies, to alkaline rhyolite (Mirr, 1976). The
mafic rocks predominate over the more silicic. Included
amongst the first are the San Agustin Basalt (BSA,
30383.2S-672828.5W), the Usno Basalt (BU,
303354.03S-673229.02W), and the Los MollesLos Bretes Trachybasalt (LM-LB, 304601.71S672717.96W). The main geologic and petrographic
features of these mafic rocks are here summarized. Also,
major and trace element data and their relationship to the
regional tectonic regime are presented.
386
average). The averages of Zr/Nb ratio are 3.8, 5.0 and 5.3
for the BSA, BU and LM-LB, respectively. The Y
content for all these rocks shows a very limited variation
from 23.1 to 31.8 ppm (28.2 ppm average).
Spiderdiagrams for the basalts and the trachybasalt (Fig.
3b) show identical pattern with a peak at Nb-Ta.
Nevertheless, BU is relatively depleted in Rb and K
respect to the other analyzed rocks. In the chondritenormalized REE diagram (Fig. 3c) light-REE are
strongly enriched while heavy-REE abundances are about
7 to 15 times the chondritic values, suggesting the
presence of garnet as residual phase in the source.
Several geochemical discrimination diagrams were
applied in the interpretation of the tectonic setting of
these rocks. In the Zr vs. Zr/Y diagram (Fig. 3d) all the
samples fall within the intraplate basalt field. This is
further supported by the Zr-Ti/100-Y*3 and Zr/4-Nb*2-Y
diagrams (not shown). Moreover, in the La/10-Y/15-Nb/8
diagram (Fig. 3e) all samples are plotted in the field of
alkaline basalts of continental intraplate (rift) setting.
Preliminary Considerations
3 Geochemistry
In spite of the absence of radiometric age determinations
of the alkaline volcanic activity in the area, it has been
ascribed to the latest stages of the Gondwanian orogenic
cycle (Early Triassic) characterized by active extensional
faulting, development of sedimentary rift basins, and
non-orogenic magmatism along the continental margin of
Gondwana. The Triassic rift system has a general NW-SE
trend controlled by basement fabrics. The BSA, BU and
LM-LB are located along the margin of the uplifted
eastern basement block of the Sierra de Valle Frtil
following such broad structural trend, and are closely
related to deep lithospheric fractures. The studied
volcanic rocks would then be the result of intraplate
magmatic activity associated with intra-crustal rifting.

2 Methododology
1 Introduction
The petrogenesis of igneous rocks is recorded by the
development of its texture (microstructure). Texture is
taken here as the complete geometric description of the
crystals in the rock, together with their internal structural,
chemical and isotopic variations. The geometric aspects of
texture have been quantified in studies of many different
types of plutonic and volcanic rocks, except granitoids
(Higgins 2006). Part of the reason for this is the
complexity of the textures of many granitoids, as revealed
by heterogeneities within crystals.
Information on the textural variation within crystals can be
studied using point analyses or by imaging techniques. In
this paper we will discuss cathodoluminescence (CL:
electron-excited luminescence) imaging, an inexpensive,
powerful and well-known technique (Pagel et al., 2000)
that has been rarely applied to the study of granitoids (e.g.
Slaby and Gtze, 2004; Catlos et al., 2010; Dalby et al.,
2010). CL easily reveals the presence of different feldspar
type and textures because subtle variations in feldspar
chemistry may result in different CL colours and intensities
(see Dalby et al., 2010 and references therein).
Specifically, vivid red CL is observed in almost pure albite
(Ab>95), contrasting with the blue CL colours that
characterized
K-feldspar.
Consequently,
chemical
heterogeneities in minerals revealed by CL have been used
to identify magmatic evolution (e.g., 6DE\ DQG *|W]H
2004), or in relation with subsolidus processes (e.g., Dalby
et al., 2010 and references therein).
In this contribution we show that CL-petrography can add
much information to simple optical examination of thin

granitoids that are not evident or even visible in planepolarised or cross-polarised light images. Feldspar CL
colours permit their easy identification: red for pure albite,
green tones from the albite-anorthite solid solutions and
light blue for K-feldspar. If the equipment is available then
it is a relatively cheaper way to characterise granitoids
petrographically in more detail. Textures indicative of
magmatic evolution or even subsolidus, fluid-rock
interactions can be then easily identified and characterized.

1 Introduction
The Illapel Plutonic Complex (IPC, 3125 3230S),
which is part of the Lower Cretaceous magmatic belt of
the Coastal Range of central Chile, exhibit a wide
range of lithologies and a very good exposure (Parada
et al., 1999; Morata et al. 2009, 2010). Mafic
microgranular enclaves (MME) are particularly
abundant in the IPC (Varas et al., 2009), mainly
located within the Main Tonalitic Unit (MTU), as is
shown in Figure 1.
In this work we present new data about mineral
chemistry (amphibole and plagioclase) from MME,
their respective host rock and some ultramafic
xenoliths. With this information we propose a P-T
crystallization path for the magmatic system named
above.

3 Petrography
A petrographic study allowed us to define the MTU as
a composite body of monzogranite, granodiorites,
quartz monzodiorites, and subordinately tonalities, all
with amphiboles and biotites. For MME compositions
are slightly different. They range in composition from
diorites to monzodiorites, and subordinately quartz
monzodiorites, all also with amphiboles and biotites.
From a mineralogical point of view, the same minerals
from the host rock are present in the MME, differing
only in modal percentage and in grain size, with
medium grain size host rocks, while MME present a
fine grain size. MME show an increase in the
percentage of mafic minerals with respect to their host
rock (Fig. 2). Also are found in the southern part of the
IPC, ultramafic decimetric xenoliths, corresponding to
hornblendites. Field relationships of these xenoliths
contrast with MME, showing angular shapes and
coarse to medium grain size.
5 Geothermobarometry
Pressures were obtained using the Schmidt (1992)
calibration. The results show that the emplacement
pressures for the host rocks, as well as for MME are
very low, with values of 1.6 0.6 kbar and 1.80.6 kbar
respectively. These results are consistent with the
pressure range calculated for other Cretaceous plutonic
rocks from the Coastal Batholith (1.5 3.0 kbar;

2 Litologa y Geocronologa

canal Moraleda y fiordos transversales asociados (e.g.
fiordos Aysn y Quitralco).
orientacin aproximada N-S.

Abstract.

Most authors (Nasi et. al., 1985; Kay et. al., 1989;
Llambas & Sato, 1990) agree with the concept that those
Carboniferous rocks such as Tabaquito (High Lower
Carboniferous) or Elqui Complex (Upper Carboniferous)
are part of a magmatic arc related to the Pacific subduction
along the western margin of Gondwana. (Llambas & Sato,
1995). The close similarity of the chemical characteristics
and related age from La Troya granitoids with the samples
from FCP (and hence their genetic relationship) suggests
an association between the stock of the Veladero Hill and
Carboniferous magmatism developed in the Western
margin of Gondwana as a result of Pacific subduction,
which crops out extensively in Frontal Cordillera and to a
lesser extent in Precordillera (Mpodozis and Kay, 1992).
The relative large distance to the Cordillera Frontal
batholiths where magmatic arc was located (Herv, 1987)
can be explained as a product of a strong eastward shifting
and expansion from Late Carboniferous to Early Permian
(Rodrgez Blanco, 2004). This expansion was explained by
Ramos and Folguera (2009) with a possible flat slab
subduction. The Veladero stock could then relate to an
isolated minor plutonic body, as a product of such
magmatic expansion located on the western edge of the
Pampean Ranges in contact with Precordillera. Moreover it
is possible that the boundary between these different
terranes was probably used by the magma to rise, thus
proving the tectonic nature of the contact between them
(Llambas, 1999).

(Alvarez, 1970). Por otro lado, diversos autores utilizando
mtodos radiomtricos, determinan una edad Carbonfera
para un importante episodio de metamorfismo y
plutonismo en el basamento (Gonzlez-Bonorino, 1971;
Munizaga et al., 1973; Munizaga et al., 1985; Herv et al.,
1990).

2 Resultados

1 Introduccin
OHiggins, Guyot OHiggins, Alpha, Beta, Gamma,

(Booker et al., 1967; Baker et al, 1987; Stuessy et al, 1984;

obtenido edades entre ca. 0,9-2,4 Ma (Stuessy et al., 1984;

4 Conclusiones
permitir discutir otras ideas ms generales relacionadas
con procesos del margen continental.

1 Introduction
The Precordillera terrane is a Laurentia-derived block
accreted to southwestern Gondwana in the Middle
Ordovician (Astini et al., 1995). The ro Bonete region
(2831S - 6830W) constitutes the northernmost extent of
Precordillera (Astini and Davila, 2004; Martina y Astini,
2009). Initial stratigraphic correlations with Precordillera
relied on subtle lithologic similarities (Kay et al., 1984;
Astini et al., 2000) and the presence of Ordovician fossils
(Aceolaza et al., 1971). In order to assess the affinity of
this region with the Precordillera we present new wholerock Sr-Nd isotopic data from metaigneous rocks
belonging to the basement of the region.

1 Introduction
The mass transfer process operating in open systems has
been a subject of investigation and debate in the last
seventy years (Brinkley, 1946, 1947; Giggenbach, 1984;
Karpov et al., 1997, among others). Gresens (1967) opened
a line of thought for the theory of mass transfer in
metasomatic processes. Grant (1986) revamped the
equations used by Gresens and proposed the so called
isocon methodology. Since then, a number of authors have
worked, mathematically and geochemically, in order to
estimate the elements mobility represented by isocons in
the mass transfer processes. We have modified the
approach of Grant (1986) changing the focus of attention
to the whole mass estimation of the alteration product.
Based on the concentration of the analysed species we can
quantify the effect alteration events for each species. The
mass difference of species between unaltered and altered
rock, will provide a quantitative estimate of mobility. This
approach is not restricted to an specific alteration process
because it could be applied also to any kind of mass
transfer process would it be magmatic, metasomatic,
metamorphic or other.

from the flow top. The flow is a plagioclaseclinopyroxene, olivine (pseudomorphs) and magnetite
bearing basaltic-andesitic calcalkaline lava. Fractures,
veinlets and amygdales are filled mainly with laumontite.
Subordinate interstratified mafic phyllosilicate and
chalcedony are also present in different proportions. There
is a variable replacement of glass by oxidized clays, and a
mixture of zeolite-mafic phyllosilicate (including
celadonite) as revealed by microscope petrography, XRD
and microprobe analyses. The rock samples represent a
non pervasively oxidized zone that is considered here as a
"fresh" zone (LP11-06), nearly devoid of amygdales and
away from veins and major fractures (low fluid to rock
ratio). Altered zones are: a highly fractured, amygdaloidal
and veinlet-bearing zone (LP11-04; high fluid to rock
ratio); and intermediate fluid to rock ratio samples from
the centre (LP11-05) and the top of the flow (LP11-07).
From the volume of the most altered sample (LP11-04) we
have chosen four sub-samples (LP11-04-1A, LP11-04-02,
LP11-04-03, LP11-04-05) to represent each departure from
homogeneity in the sample. Major and trace elements were
analysed, including lost on ignition weight percent with .
