NAVI DAD
CHRISTMAS
LAGA enjoys Christmas with a special intensity. From early December until January 6th, the city has a very special atmosphere, one in which the night-time illuminations and the decorations in the historic city centre play an important role. However, some dates are still extra special, of course. Christmas Eve, for example, the 24th December, when the people of Mlaga usually spend the evening with their fami-

lies, as they do on Christmas Day, the following day. Nevertheless, it is also the custom for many people to eat out together at a restaurant on Christmas Day, rather than at home. NewYears Eve, on 31st December, is a more casual celebration. The last evening of the year is a festive occasion all over Spain, and Mlaga is no exception. One tradition has never been lost over the years; that of eating 12 grapes at the same time as the clock strikes 12 to mark the end of one year and the start of another. This tradition originated from a surplus in the grape harvest, possibly at the end of the 19th century. After eating the grapes for luck, it is time for a champagne toast and then a party.Whether at home, in a discotheque or in other venues prepared especially for the occasion, people celebrate with enthusiasm. The other major date in the calendar at this time of year is the Day of the Epiphany, better known as theThree Kings Day.This is when the children receive their gifts from Melchor, Gaspar and Balthasar. The evening beforehand, they are entertained by watching the Grand Procession which leaves from Mlaga Port and makes its way through the streets of the historic city centre, when thousands of sweets are thrown from the floats for the enjoyment of the spectators.

one in which Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born, invites you to stroll through its streets, discover its corners, see its monuments with different eyes. A good place to begin is in Calle Larios. From where it starts in the Alameda
Principal, this pedestrian street is full of history, as can be seen from the faades of some of its buildings. They recall, without a doubt, the splendour of an industrial city thanks to the entrepreneurial middle-class whose names still
appear in different streets of the city (Heredia, Pres, Grund, Huelin and, of course, Larios). Then we arrive at the Plaza de la Constitucin, which is always illuminated but especially so at Christmas. It has been remodelled during the past decade, but still maintains the signs of identity of a city which is full of history. This becomes evident during a slow stroll through the square, but keep looking ahead, because numerous architectural details will catch the attention of the curious eye. Off this square is Calle Santa Mara, which is a narrow street but is always lively, with its bars and shops. Walking along here is rewarding because it leads to one of the most interesting parts of the city at night: the area around Mlaga Cathedral. This building, which is nicknamed la manquita, or little one-armed lady, because one of its towers is missing, is beautifully lit up at night all through the year. Its majesty can be admired from many parts of the surrounding area, such as the Plaza del Obispo, which has a special charm of its own when the sun goes down. The cathedral, the Episcopal Palace and the pedestrian area with spacious outdoor terraces are a dazzling combination. But Mlaga at night holds even more surprises in store. Walking down Calle Cster, leaving the Cathedral on the right, visitors will come to another of the most delightful areas of the historic city centre at night-time: an area which has such differing architectures as the Roman Theatre, the Alcazaba fortress and the Palacio de la Aduana. These are the legacy of the different civilisations and influences on this city, which dates back to Phoenician times, and the perfect illumination gives them an unrivalled romantic aura. They are linked via Calle Alcazabilla, a pedestrian street, where there are also plenty of terraces for those who wish to pause and enjoy the surroundings. The walls of La Alcazaba can also be seen in conjunction with the Gibralfaro Moorish castle from the neaby Parque, which is one of the green areas of the city. This historic garden of Mlaga is also an interesting place to stroll once the sun has gone down. From here some very noble buildings can be seen, such as the aforementioned Palacio de la Aduana, the current headquarters of the Chancellor of the University (formerly the Post Office building), the Bank of Spain and Mlaga City Hall. And, as a backdrop, battlements and walls of the Andalusian remains of the city. A perfect place to end this walk is the Plaza de la Merced, which was remodelled barely two years ago and enhanced with special lighting which also encourages a leisurely stroll and enjoyment of the charms of Mlaga at night, below the stars.

LAGA is a city with a wealth of churches that are full of history, such as the one which is dedicated to the Virgen de la Victoria (Virgin of the Victory), the patron saint of the city. It is very close to the historic city centre, at the end of two streets that also bear its name. So, from the Plaza de la Merced, one has to go up Calle Victoria and then take the street called Comps de la Victoria to reach this majestic church, which was built between the 15th and 17th centuries. Its origins date back to the time when Mlaga was under siege by the Catholic Monarchs, specifically in the year 1487. According to reports, Fernando the Ca-
tholic set up his camp in the same place where the church now stands, until the city was conquered on 18th August. There is little information about the image of Santa Mara de la Victoria, which was already in the hands of the monarch, or where it came from; legend has it that the emperor Maximilian of Austria gave the icon to the Catholic Monarchs as a gift. During the siege of the city some monks from the Mnima Order arrived to deliver a letter from the founder of their Order, San Francisco de Paula; in the missive, he asked permission to open convents of the Order in Spain and encouraged the monarchs to continue in their attempt to conquer
those at the side, directed light, the naves of the chapels communicating with each other, the dome of the transept and the luminous area behind the altarpiece. One of its main characteristics is its crypt-sacristy-chapel combination. This area of the building holds a very special symbolism, inspired by the spiritual exercises of St. Ignacio de Loyola and classified as a key piece in Andalusian baroque. The first room we see is the crypt of the Condes de Buenavista; here, death and its different phases are the protagonists. A four-section staircase leads to the chapel of Santa Mara de la Victoria. This is the antithesis of the previous room; the triumph of light and eternal glory forms the message and the image of the Virgin is the centrepiece and point of reference. The final room is an exhibition area with historic items appertaining to the Virgin.

History of Mlaga
LAGA, under the name of Malaka (referring to the salting of fish), was founded by the Phoenicians around 800 B.C. as a trading place, following the colonisation which commenced in 1100 B.C. with the founding of Gadir (Cdiz). After the Greek domination which lasted for over 70 years, Malaga was ruled by the Carthaginians but after the Punic Wars, which ended in the year 202 B.C. with victory by the Romans, the city passed into their domain under the name of Flavia Malacita, and became an important point of transit with communications to other Roman enclaves in the Peninsula and other Mediterranean ports. The Roman Theatre dates back to this period and although it is small in size it is one of the oldest in the whole of Hispania. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Mlaga was affected by the great migrations and settlements of the Germanic peoples, specifically the Siling Vandals who imported the Arian beliefs from the Orient. In the early 8th century the collapse of the gothic monarchy began and from the coasts of North Africa the Moors penetrated the Iberian Peninsula. Mlaga fell under their control in the year 743 and became a flourishing city, surrounded by a
wall with five large gateways. The city comprised numerous walled districts and was crossed from East to West by a road which linked the port and the Alcazaba fortress with the interior of the walled precinct. Separate from the rest of the city were the districts of traders from Genoa and the Jewish district. In the 13th century Abderramn III built the Atarazanas Gate (which is now the entrance to the indoor market). Although in the 14th century the first attempts at a reconquest took place, it wasnt until the end of the 15th century that the Catholic Monarchs succeeded in taking the city. Mlaga was conquered on August 19th 1487 (the last city to be conquered was Granada in 1492). With this conquest, religious communities became a fundamental part of urban growth, with the poorer districts on the outskirts. A grand square was created for the first time - the Plaza Mayor, which is today the Plaza de la Constitucin as well as La Victoria and La Trinidad convents. The 16th and 17th centuries were characterised by the crisis which resulted in the expulsion of the Moorish converts on one hand and the bad harvests, the floods caused by the overflowing of the Guadalmedina river and the epidemics on the other. In the 17th century the port was built, and it was enlarged later. Although work began on the Cathedral in 1528, it was not finished until the 18th century: well into the Baroque period. In the same era, the port was enlarged once again, recovering some of its previous activity. In the 19th century Mlaga began important urban development, with a clear separation of the industrial area from that of large mansions and hotels. Calle Marqus de Larios and La Alameda opened. The economic and political crises which were due to the tyranny of King Fernando VII (who allowed the unjust shooting of Torrijos and his men, whose remains lie in the square which is now called Plaza de la Merced and is a venue for different activities and festivals) are the outstanding negative features of the 19th century. The first decades of the 20th century were not very favourable but from the 1960s Mlaga was the scene of the tourism boom in Spain and millions of people chose to spend their holidays in the city, while thousands of foreigners decided it was the ideal place to live. It became the fifth most important city in Spain and a modern European capital, enriched by its international diversity and mixture of cultures. Since 1992 Mlaga has had good road infrastructure with magnificent national connections and it has one of the most important international airports in Europe.

for walking in this mountainous area is the Cortijo de los Quejigales, which is reached from the north-westerly side, in other words by taking a track which goes off from the Ronda-San Pedro road near Las Conejeras campsite. One of the most popular routes for experienced hikers starts from this recreation area: the route up to the top of La Torrecilla, the highest peak in Mlaga province. Fortunately, there are also other, less difficult, routes which start at Los Quejigales, like the one that follows the old livestock trails of Ronda or the one that goes up to the Pen de los Enamorados. Along these routes, hikers can enjoy some of the most picturesque landscapes of the province, with no lack of rocky gorges, extensive forests of pinsapo firs and a variety of interesting fauna. At this time of year there is often snow on the peaks of the Sierra de las Nieves, but it is advisable not to go walking if rain or cold weather is forecast. As well as the routes mentioned so far, it is possible to do other walks between different places in the Sierra de las Nieves. They are all part of the GR-243, which includes some stretches that can be walked comfortably, such as the one that links Guaro with Monda, and others which are extremely hard, like the one that links Ronda with the village of El Burgo.

FTER your extensive experience as a Minister of different departments with the regional government, what can you bring to the Port Authority? -In different departments of the Junta de Andaluca I have gained knowledge about aspects of economic life in this region that are related with the port activity. Mlaga Port has great possibilities for working with the food industry, and the tourism sector, especially the nautical section, has a future in this port. The port is also a magnificent venue for cultural events. The experience I have gained in some of the posts I have held can help to generate economic development in the port and improve its performance. While the port is in a difficult situation, new strategies need to be designed to recover financial balance in the medium term. -What are your main objectives in this new post? -The principal objective is to improve the economy of the port, working to reduce the negative figures and create a situation of equilibrium. The port has many possibilities. One example is improving its performance through managing its assets. The property sector is not exactly experiencing its best moment, and for that reason we will have to wait to carry out some projects on the Dique de Levante, Muelle Heredia and San Andrs. With regard to the cruise sector, the Port Authority is trying to generate new sales by incorporating new services into what the port has to offer. The airport is also an important asset and we have to incorporate it when selling cruise tourism. Meanwhile, the climate helps Mlaga city and the province to be the perfect place for this type of tourism, so we have to work on attracting year-round tourism, because seasonal tourism is a major problem in this sector. Mlaga Port will also focus on other aspects such as freight, vehicle and bulk traffic because, thanks to its strategic situation close to the Straits of Gibraltar, the port has an extraordinary future. -How can better figures be

a chieved with regard to cruise tourism? -We are working on a document that makes clear to operators in the sector the enormous possibilities of this port as a base and transit port for cruise liners. This document lays down the technical conditions of the cruise terminals and the berths assigned for this type of traffic, which have the capacity to house the biggest ships in the world, as well as the itineraries for the most interesting excursions for cruise passengers, not only in the city and the province but also places that should not be missed in Andaluca, such as the Alhambra in Granada. To sum up, this document is like a letter of introduction to the port area and the tourist attractions of the city and its province. Also, Mlaga Port is currently in the process of obtaining certification of its terminals in terms of accessibility and we are continuing to work with other entities to show that this is a magnificent port for provisioning ships and for providing health-related services to the passengers and crew of the liners. -What needs to be done at present? -Mlaga Port needs an alliance with the airport and with Renfe, to facilitate passenger traffic to the cruise li-

ECEMBER and January, sandwiched between the autumn and winter in Mlaga, are two months which are traditionally busy with festivals and traditions, in the city and also in nearby villages. The festivals of La Constitucin and La Inmaculada (6th and 8th December) and the proximity of Christmas make this a very special time of year in the capital of the Costa del Sol and all over the province. Festivals with a Christmas flavour, Nativity scene exhibitions, carol singing, Three Kings parades and the celebration of the New Year in the open air are just some of the most outstanding events in the second fortnight of December and the first half of January. And all the people of Mlaga and visitors are welcome to take part. The majority of these festive events are free of charge, and this makes them and participation in them accessible to everybody, from the youngest to the adults who are imbued with the spirit of Christmas each year. Among the highlights of the celebrations in Mlaga city is the Fiesta Mayor de Verdiales, which for decades has been held on the 28th December each year. This is the biggest folklore event in the province; it is a very special musical competition and a tradition which only exists in this part of Spain. Some research indicates that the verdiales preceded the fandango, which is a very widespread style of flamenco. But as well as the events which take part in the city, those held in the rural areas of the province are also worthy of mention, such as the Migas Festival in Torrox, which is always celebrated on the Sunday before Christmas Day. This is a popular gastronomic event, at which plates of the famous migas, or crumbs made from semolina flour are given out to those present, together with helpings of arriera style salad and locally produced wine. Earlier in the month, on 12th December, the Night of the Rondeles takes place in Casarabonela. The principle sign of identity of this festival is the traditionally pagan element of fire, and although this event has an evident religious content, it is also extremely unusual. The

custom is for thanks to be given to the image of the Divina Pastora for a good olive harvest, by means of a procession through the village. What is unusual here is seeing how the fire, which is set alight in the baskets that are used to press the olives and extract the golden oil, is part of the procession. Earlier in the month there are also some other interesting gastronomic festivals, such as the Artisan Fair of the Genal Valley (6th to 9th), and the Cured Meats Festival of Benaojn (from 6th to 8th December). In none of these three events is there a lack of the most traditional products of the different regions of Mlaga, such as wine, cured meats, sweets, olive oil, goats milk cheese and honey, among many others. The month of January always gets off to an energetic start in Mlaga province. After the hangover from New Year, there is barely time to recharge ones batteries before celebrating the Three Kings Festival. The most popular way of celebrating this Catholic tradition is through street parades. In many villages in Mlaga these take place on the 4th or 5th of the month, but the most outstanding is the parade that is held in Mlaga city. As has been the case for decades, this procession, which is aimed principally for children, takes place on the evening of 5th January, in other words on the evening before the Three Kings Day, or Epiphany. In the province, however, the first month of the year is not only notable for enjoyable festivities but also for other religious events that take place in rural towns and villages. Comares is one of these, and it celebrates its first patron saints day of the year, that of San Hilario de Poitiers. Although the San Hilario de Poitiers festival takes place on the 13th January, the pretty village of Comares always celebrates it on the nearest weekend to that date so more people are able to join in. The devotion of the people of the village to the image of the saint has been ongoing for more than five centuries, and this is evident at 11 oclock in the morning during the Mass that is held in La Encarnacin church. After this ritual, the image of the saint is taken out in procession through the narrow, winding streets of this village in La Axarqua. Very close to this date is the festival of San Anton or San Antonio Abad (around 17th January). Although this saint is known as the patron saint of animals, the devotion to him is perhaps greater in Mijas Pueblo than anywhere else, for reasons that are especially interesting

An agenda full of
traditions
to foreigners. This is because this festival is traditionally anxiously awaited by single women from the village, especially the Osunillas district, because they ask the saint to find them a husband. They do this in a very strange way, by throwing stones at the image. Tradition has it that the girl whose stone manages to hit him in the groin will succeed in finding a boyfriend during the following year. The origin of this unusual tradition is unknown, although it is known that it began in the 15th century, and it continues to this day, to the extent that a replica of the original image has to be used to avoid it being damaged. The devotion to San Antn is expressed differently in the hamlet of Maro, in Nerja. There, people light bonfires on the eve of 17th January. It is, without a doubt, one of the most important events to take place here, and a competition has been set up among local residents to see who has the best bonfire. This tradition of lighting bonfires dates back to the 17th century, according to some historical documents. The fires that are lit the night before were believed to protect animals from illness or death. The next date to bear in mind is around 20th January, which is the Festival of San Sebastin. One of the villages that celebrate his patron saints day is Casabermeja, which pays tribute to him every year with religious ceremonies and gastronomic events.

Rutas gastronmicas Gastronomic routes Polvorones, roscos de vino and turrn are some of the most popular cakes and sweets
Canasta, amongmany others, add a very sweet Christmas flavour to a stroll through the centre of the city. There, as well as the typical confectionary of the festive season, you will also find a wide range of traditional Mlaga cakes such as the borrachuelos and locas. But if a traveller has the chance to visit the rural part of Mlaga province, they will also discover the variety and quality of the confectionary of the villages. For example, Ardales is one of themunicipalities with the longest tradition and largest number of establishments, where the excellent products of Marcos y Rivas can be found. Not far fromthere, in Carratraca, it is essential to visit the charming cake shop of Rosa, with its delicious roscos and biscuits. In Caete La Real, the best option is that of the Santsimo Sacramento convent, where the famous pestios of this town aremade. In Sierra deYeguas, theMaldonado establishment, close to themain square of the village, offers a wide range of Christmas sweets although its star product, without a doubt, is the pionono, while in Cuevas del Becerro, LaTahona continues tomake its polvorones and suspiros as it always has. In the area known as La Vega de Antequera there are also plenty of opportunities to buy traditional types of confectionary. It is often necessary to visit convents such as those in the village of El Torcal or Las Mnimas in Archidona, although fewer sweets are produced at the latter these days because of the state of health of many of the nuns. In Cuevas de San Marcos, one small establishment is outstanding for the wide variety of traditional products which are made there. The owner, Rosario Gins, is an enthusiast for traditional confectionary and has recovered many old recipes to create sweets and cakes which would otherwise have faded into oblivion, like the pan de cortijo which is made with almonds, egg, spices and sugar. As it does not contain flour, this cake is suitable for coeliacs. Apart from this speciality, Rosario also makes other delights for the palate such as polvorones, made with olive oil or with butter, roscos de vino and flores de leche, among many others. And all of them have a common denominator: they are made with love and contain no preservatives or artificial colouring. In other words, just as they always used to be.

FIVE BALLS
N the heart of the historic city centre of Mlaga is a narrow street with a mysterious inscription on the wall. It is the street that goes by the name of Cinco Bolas (Five Balls) and where, at one end, beside the church of San Juan, five semi-spherical balls are embedded in the wall. Despite this type of decoration not being exactly usual, they tend to go unnoticed by passers-by. It is difficult to discover why they were put there, and when. The most popular theory relates them directly to the years after the city was taken by the Catholic Monarchs. In fact, these balls could have come from cannons of that era, which were used during the decisive battle over the conquest of the city. According to historic records from that time, the battle to take Mlaga was one of the most bloody of all those carried out by the Catholic Monarchs. These spheres may have been an expression of gratitude for the supposedly divine assistance they received during this warlike episode, because the Nasrid armies in Mlaga were the most resistant to the entry by the Christian troops.
There are several theories about the origin of these five coloured spheres
There is another version which often makes people blush when it is told. Some historians say that next to the present San Juan church there used to be a convent of nuns, which was used as a brothel by the Mlaga nobility of the 16th century. Some say that the five balls were the sign of a secret door to enter the brothel. Others say that a great deal of manhood was needed to enter that street of perversion, so much so that instead of two balls (referring to testicles), men needed at least five. The most reasonable hypothesis, however, is related to the construction of a convent in this part of the city. This would warrant the installation of an Easter Candle, which is decorated with five coloured balls. Each colour means something, according to Catholic tradition: blue signifies the sky and purity; green means hope; red is for fire, love and sacrifice; purple is for penitence; and the yellow one (which is in the centre), is the symbol of light and the Majesty of Christ. In fact, at the moment, this mysterious symbol is very up-to-date because it is the main feature on the poster for the next Spanish Film Festival in Mlaga, which will take place in the spring of 2014. In the meantime, it seems impossible that nobody in the city can agree about the origin of the street or the significance of these coloured balls.
