Spring Cleaning in the Neighborhood with Clean Up Cuse

With spring just around the corner, everyone is excited to see the snow disappear and to see the flowers bloom again. The one notso-beautiful thing that always appears as the snow melts away is the large amounts of trash that have been buried in the snow for the last five months. This year, the city of Syracuse is rallying all of its citizens to come out in solidarity to clean up our streets and make our city beautiful once again. As one of the selected target areas for Clean Up Cuse the Near Westside will have an opportunity to be spruced up as we enter the spring and summer months. To do so, continued on pg 3

Caroles Corner: The View Across Skiddy

By Carole Horan For nearly 41 years now I have been looking out my front windows toward Skiddy Park and the houses on Otisco Street facing Skiddy. Many years ago there was one new house built, then for many years the street became stagnant; no new houses and the houses there were becoming increasingly run-down. It was very exciting a couple of summers ago when Home HeadQuarters (HHQ) began to build a new house right in the middle of the block. Also equally exciting was when I realized the owners of the new yellow house were people I had come to know during the last couple of years. This month I want to introduce you to Hilary Mansur and Chris Donohue, the people who live in that nice yellow house, and the newest member of their family: a rescue dog named Frankie cute and curious. Hilary is from Massachusetts and came to Syracuse to go to the SU School of Architecture. She graduated in 2010 and began working in the neighborhood as an Engagement Fellow of SU, doing her work at HHQ. Now she works full time at HHQ, her title these days is Construction Coordinator. Chris is from south of Rochester and he also came here for architecture, the only thing he took from that program, he told me with a smile, was Hilary. He graduated from SUNY Cortland and is now employed by the Syracuse City School District as a 7th & 8th grade math teacher at Danforth. Chris said that the students he works with like seeing him living in the neighborhood. When I asked Hilary why they wanted to move to the Near Westside she told me the following: Her first introduction to us was with her work on the Link House with her class at school. (You might recall I introduced you to the Rothwells in February, they live in that house.) Hilary spent a summer working on Link House and came to know us, so the focus of her 5th year thesis for school was on the Near Westside. Also through the work with the Link House she became acquainted with HHQ and there began her journey to become an engagement fellow with HHQ and thus live in the Lincoln Building as part of her fellowship. They lived in the Lincoln Bldg for a year then moved to James Street; they felt so isolated from their neighborhood there, there were no connections. The hunt for a place back into the neighborhood began. Hilary and Chris have lived in their new house for a year now. They love it! Here are some of things they love about it: On a nice day when you walk down the street, you talk to about 30 people, says Chris. the neighborhood is more alive they love being by Skiddy Park, really love all the activity and the noise (they live across from the basketball court, just like I do) it is convenient to all the highways and easy access to anywhere else you can walk downtown they love their neighbors! there are connections to people it is interesting to see a place change the neighborhood doesnt have a hopeless feeling, there are a lot of good things happening here! So there you have it, our secrets of why living on the Near Westside are out. They have discovered why it is a good place to live, and they know why we all love to be here!

Clean Up Cuse continued...

the city of Syracuse needs your help on Saturday, April 13th from 9am to 1pm. Volunteers will be meeting at Ward Bakery Park (on Shonnard Street between Oswego Street and Slocum Avenue) at 9am to receive a t-shirt, some gloves, tools, trash bags, and some instructions on how to best clean up the surrounding community. In particular, Clean Up Cuse on the Westside will focus on two main projects. The first is preparing mulch beds at the triangle located at Elliott, Dudley, and Putnam Streets. The second is cleaning up trash and debris along many of the streets in the Near Westside ranging from Otisco Street all the way up to Shonnard Street. The main organizers for this event in the Near Westside are the Westside Residents Coalition and the Near Westside Initiative. In addition, several local businesses and not-for-profits will bring groups of volunteers to help out. What is still needed now is you! We need as many volunteers as possible to lighten the load and to make it a fun and encouraging day in the community. For all your hard work you will be rewarded with a great t-shirt, some food and refreshments at the end of the event, and most importantly, the satisfaction that you are making your community a better and more beautiful place to live, work, and play. St. Josephs Hospital Health Center Breaks Ground on Westside Family Health Center Expansion
St. Josephs is constructing a new building on the west side of Nojaims parking lot to relocate its Westside Family Health Center, currently located at 216 Seymour St., Syracuse. Over time, it has become obvious the current clinic space was inadequate to address the health care needs of the neighborhood and existing clinic patients. The expanded center will be four times as large and have 12 health care providers, including three family medicine doctors, an obstetrician, a pediatrician, a behavioral health counselor and several physician assistants and nurse practitioners. St. Josephs will provide behavioral, primary care and obstetrics/gynecology services, focusing on prevention and education programs, in one facility. In addition to daytime office hours, health care providers will be available evenings and weekends. A medical home, the center is a community-based primary care setting that will provide coordinated care throughout the lifespan. With funding provided by a HEAL-NY grant, the new Westside Family Health Center will open in early 2014. St. Josephs Hospital Health Center is also partnering with Nojaim Brothers Supermarket to improve the health of residents on Syracuses Near West Side through the development of new health programs, primarily focused on encouraging healthy shopping and eating habits.

The Monday Mile is Coming to the Near Westside

By Matt MacDougall Pretty soon, Mondays are going to help you get moving! Thats right; Monday is a day to have a fresh start with all things healthy. Using Monday as the day to start an exercise plan will be soon be easy and fun when a mapped Monday Mile route is added to the SALT District this summer. The Near West Side Initiative and Healthy Monday Syracuse made this new loop. Healthy Monday Syracuse is part of a national program to help people become healthy and stay healthy. Research has shown that Monday is a special day, where people are more likely to start exercising, start eating healthier, and even quit smoking. The Monday Mile is one of Healthy Monday Syracuses programs that help people be active and healthy. The Monday Mile is a mapped, mile long loop that starts and ends at the corner of Wyoming and Marcellus Streets, but you can really start anywhere along the path. Signs will be there to guide your way and to tell you how far you have walked. This is a fun way to get moving each day, can be easily worked into your schedule, and can help you get a healthy start to your week. Using the Monday Mile to step into exercise makes being active easy. Walking or jogging a mile takes about 20-30 minutes helps you to feel healthier and happier! Exercising for this long every day also helps you to reach the suggested target of being active for 150 minutes a week. Even though Monday is the day to start being active, you can walk, jog, or run the Monday Mile all week long! Be on the look out this summer for these new signs! The Monday Mile Loop in the SALT District isnt the only one. You may have seen signs showing loops downtown, in many of the city and county parks, SUs campus and near Upstate Hospital. Have you heard the sounds of remodeling in your neighborhood? Those sounds might be coming from work funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse have been awarded funding to reduce lead paint hazards in homes. Lead hazards are often found in homes built before 1978 on windows, doors, wood siding, and porches. Who can receive the grants? Applicants who meet all the following requirements may be eligible:* Those who own or rent a property in Onondaga County built before 1978 A family that meets the income guidelines and who has a child under the age of six living in their home or visiting often Homeowners who may quality: Must have a current homeowners insurance policy Must comply with flood zone requirements Must be current with all property taxes, mortgages, and water bills

Why is Lead paint and lead dust a hazard? Lead is a poison. Lead dust (which you can not see) is created when lead paint is disturbed from sanding or scraping painted surfaces, sweeping or vacuuming loose paint chips, and opening and closing windows or doors that are painted with lead paint. Young children and pregnant women are especially at risk for lead poisoning. If lead gets into a childs body, it may cause learning, behavioral, and medical problems. How do I know if my children are safe? If you are not eligible for one of these grant programs, you may still qualify for a free home lead paint inspection. If you live in a rental property in the City of Syracuse, call to see if you qualify. Lets treat homes not children! Call the Onondaga County Health Department at 435-3271. Lead poisoning can be preventedcall today to find out more! *Fair Housing Laws prohibit discrimination in the sale or rental of housing based upon race, color, religion, sex, age, marital status, handicapped or familial status, or natural origin.

The Near Westside: A Community on the Move

What makes a community a neighborhood? Is it the people, the buildings, the jobs, the green spaces? Its all of those things and more! Specifically it is all those things working in partnership together to move a neighborhood forward in a positive way. That is what the Near Westside Community on the Move monthly meetings strives to do. Community on the Move is a group of residents that has been meeting for the last four years, every last Thursday of the month from 6:30pm to 8pm. It is a meeting where people from all over the neighborhood gather to share a meal, talk about upcoming events and projects, and to learn about new things happening in their neighborhood. It is also a time to share any challenges that you as a neighbor in the community maybe facing from issues regarding safety, to housing, to access to quality city services. Please consider attending the next meeting. Bring your friends and family as well. All are welcome!

Comunidad en Movimiento es un grupo de vecinos que se ha estado reuniendo durante los ltimos cuatro aos, cada ltimo jueves del mes desde las 6pm hasta las 8pm. Es una reunin donde la gente de todo el vecindario se renen para compartir una comida, hablar sobre los prximos eventos y proyectos, y para aprender sobre cosas nuevas que suceden en su barrio. Tambin es un tiempo para compartir cualquier desafo que usted, como vecino de la comunidad tal vez frente a las cuestiones relativas a la seguridad, a la vivienda, al acceso a los servicios municipales de calidad. SALTQuarters: A Work in Progress

In 2013 the NWSI, was funded by ArtPlace, a national foundation focused on Creative Placemaking, to transform a once vacant restaurant/bar into a hub for artists and creative individuals. For the last several months, the building has been undergoing renovations to transform it into SALTQuarters. When finished (completion is scheduled for the middle of May), it will be a 4,000 square foot building, with two apartments, three art studios, and a gallery space. The building is located at the corner of the Otisco and Wyoming streets, a critical intersection in the neighborhood where residential meets commercial. Below is are some pictures of the work in progress as well as a rendering of what SALTQuarters will look like when completed. More to come on this in the May edition of the Near Westside Insider!

SALTQuarters: un trabajo en progreso

En 2013, la NWSI, fue financiado por ArtPlace, una fundacin nacional centrada en Placemaking Creative, para transformar un restaurante una vez vacante en un centro para artistas y personas creativas. Durante los ltimos meses, el edificio ha sido reuperado para transformarlo en SALTQuarters. Cuando termine (terminacin de construccin est prevista para mediados de mayo), ser un edificio de 4.000 metros cuadrados, con dos pisos, tres estudios de arte, y un espacio de galera.
