lthough an artist at heart, Karla Lpez of Elgin needed a career that paid the bills. Psychology was the answer. I want to learn how the brain works, how it affects relationships, says Lpez, a member of the 2010 AllIllinois Academic Team. Lpez credits Elgin Community College with giving her the flexibility that allowed her to make the right career decision. In addition to ECC being a more affordable option, she qualified for the Trustee Academic Scholarship to help pay her tuition.

Una parte importante de ese cambio fue la escuela culinaria de Elgin Community College. Ahora vivo en Elgin, pero cuando comenc tardaba 3 horas para llegar a ECC desde el South Side. Vala la pena. Delfino Tapia, Culinary Arts Student Growing up in Pilsen on Chicagos South Side, I found myself on the wrong path more often than I should have been. I got into trouble, locked up for stupid mistakes. I have a bullet in my back, right behind my heart, that reminds me of a dark place in my life I never want to return to. I decided that change was the only way to move forward. Thanks to a judge who opened up doors for me when she could have easily locked me up for good, I had a chance to choose a better path. A major part of that change was going to culinary school at Elgin Community College. I live in Elgin now, but when I first enrolled, it took me three hours to get to ECC from the South Side. It was worth it. The diversity, the resources, the quality of teachers ECC has an atmosphere Ive never seen anywhere else. Culinary arts were new to me. It was tough at firstlike learning to crawl and walk but it helped me believe in myself again. Now I can create art every day, and I appreciate and savor that. Im living my dream. We all have something to give to the world, and today I feel like Im part of the solution instead of the problem. When the Phi Theta Kappa honor society gave me the Distinguished Member Award, I was humbled. I didnt know what to say. I was just someone who changed. And if I can do it, anybody can.
