tiene en sus manos un nuevo nmero de la Revista Estar,
una publicacin que nuestro equipo realiza con cario,
profesionalidad y con la consciencia de que se trata de un
elemento ms (como la atencin en recepcin, como los
amenities en el bao) para que su estancia en Eurostars
sea una experiencia agradable y enriquecedora. Siempre
en sintona con los viajes y con el mundo de la cultura, en
este nmero dedicamos un amplio reportaje a los aeropuertos como grandes espacios de arquitectura y de arte
en siglo XXI. Esas grandes terminales por las que nos paseamos a veces ms asiduamente de lo que quisiramos
a veces menos- juegan hoy, en la era de la comunicacin, el papel que antao desempearon las catedrales:
grandes referentes de arquitectura, espejo de su tiempo,
contenedores de arte y smbolos de una ciudad.
Dedicamos un reportaje a Mnich y dibujamos un permetro de diez lados para conocer las principales caras
de la ciudad, desde Marienplatz al Englischer Garten,
desde la Oktoberfest al Museo BMW. En la capital bvara
Eurostars dispone de dos modernos establecimientos,
inaugurados ambos en los ltimos aos y que engloban
ms de 400 habitaciones y 14 salones para reuniones: se
trata del Eurostars Grand Central y el Eurostars Book
Hotel. El chef del Grand Central, Markus Atov, nos hace
algunas propuestas de gastronoma bvara.
Tambin nos hemos entrevistado con el diseador Xavier
Mariscal y nos hemos escapado a Andorra, donde Eurostars ha abierto recientemente un nuevo establecimiento.

professional care and fully aware that it represents yet
another factor (alongside such others as the service at
Reception, the bathroom amenities, etc.) in ensuring
that your stay at Eurostars is a pleasant and enriching
experience. Always in touch with travel and the world
of culture, we have dedicated an extensive article in
this edition to airports as large architectural icons
and spaces for art in the 21st Century. Those large
terminals that we pass through sometimes more and
sometimes less often than we would like nowadays in the communication age - play the same role once
played by cathedrals in the past: major benchmarks in
architecture that reflect the world around them, providing a home to art and serving as symbols of a city.
We have dedicated an article to Munich and reveal
ten different sides to the city to reveal its main features; from Marienplatz to the Englischer Garten and
from Oktoberfest to the BMW Museum. Eurostars has
two modern establishments In the Bavarian capital
that were both opened in recent years and that offer
over 400 guest rooms and 14 function rooms: the Eurostars Grand Central and the Eurostars Book Hotel.
The Head Chef at the Grand Central, Markus Atov, offers a few suggestions for enjoying Bavarian cuisine.
We also interviewed designer Xavier Mariscal and
escaped to Andorra, where Eurostars has recently

La Alte Nationalgalerie de Berln propone un ejercicio que
llama la atencin incluso a los
ms profanos. Cules son los
dos principales movimientos
artsticos de finales del XIX e
inicios del XX? Impresionismo
y expresionismo. Los berlineses han juntado por primera
vez en la historia 160 obras de
ambos movimientos y las han
puesto cara a cara para configurar esta exposicin ImEx. Si
el impresionismo se asocia a
pintores franceses, recogidos
en esta muestra como Monet
o Renoir, el expresionismo se
desarroll en la Alemania de
principios del XX y tuvo como
artistas ms reconocidos a Kir-

chner, Nolde o Pechstein. Se

da la circunstancia de que la
Nationalgallerie berlinesa fue
el primer museo en adquirir
obras impresionistas, antes
incluso que la propia Pars. El
resultado nos muestra, claro,
sus grandes diferencias, pero

The Alte Nationalgalerie in
Berlin is asking a question that
will attract the attention of even
the most uninitiated to the world
of art. Which are the two most
important artistic movements
of the late 19th and early
20th Centuries? Impression-8-

ism and expressionism. For the

first time in history, Berlin has
gathered 160 works from both
movements and put them faceto-face to create this ImEx exhibition. While impressionism is
associated with French painters
(represented in this exhibition by
Monet and Renoir), expressionism developed in Germany during the early 20th Century with
its most recognised artists being
Kirchner, Nolde and Pechstein.
It just so happens that the Berlin Nationalgalerie was the first
museum to acquire works by the
impressionist artists, even before
Paris did. The result clearly
shows their major differences
but also - and this is surprising
- their enormous similarities and
interconnections.

One looks to the past and

Picasso Museum to occupy
two Gothic palaces on the

Museum of World Cultures

houses a permanent collection of over 500 archaeological items from Africa, Asia,
America and Oceania. The
other looks to the future:
the Design Museum aims
to position Barcelona at the
cutting edge of applied arts.
The iconic building - already
nicknamed the stapler - is
the work of architects Bohigas
and McKay, and is flanked by
two exceptional neighbours:
the Torre Agbar by Jean Nouvel and the new home of the
Encantes. In fact, a visit to
the museum can be accompanied by a stroll through the
fabulous new Encantes.

Something amazing is happening in New York this summer:
Shakespeare plays in Central
Park... absolutely free. The
plays by Free Shakespeare in
the Park will be performed at
the Delacorte Theatre and New
Yorkers are passionate about
them. Although they are free,
you can only get a ticket by
standing in line from midday on
the day of each performance.
They have been taking place
for over 50 years and this year
will see performances of The
Tempest and Cymbeline.

Settembre Lucchese
Lucca es una de las ciudades
ms bellas de la Toscana. Sus
murallas renacentistas han

The Lights of
Settembre Lucchese
Lucca is one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany. Its renaissance city walls survive to this
day. It is only a short distance
from Pisa and the coast - a
great base for exploring Tuscany.
Visitors simply must see the
Cathedral of St. Martin and its
precious relic of the Santo Volto
di Lucca. The Volto is a large
wooden Christ that is said to
have been made by Nicodemo.
One of the most important annual events in Lucca is the procession that traverses the city to
the cathedral. The luminaria is
the characteristic feature of this
event - a procession of lights.
This is the famous Settembre
Lucchese, which counterbalances the hectic city life with
fairs and other distractions.

In this new novel, Arturo Prez Reverte returns to the subject of history and takes his readers back to the Age of Enlightenment and the
18th Century to explore the persistent struggle by two characters - a
librarian Don Hermgenes Molina and Admiral Don Pedro Zrate to bring Spain in line with what was happening in Europe during that
period. Commissioned by the Royal Spanish Academy, their mission
will be to take the 28 volumes of the Encyclopaedia of dAlembert
to Spain. Based on real events, this is yet another example of Arturo
Prez Revertes capacity to narrate and tell a story, and his recurring
obsession to find the motives behind our way of viewing the world in
facts taken from history.

Los televisores UHD, tambin conocidos
como 4K o de ultra alta definicin, ya han
llegado, especialmente en los tamaos grandes, de 55 a 75 pulgadas, que es cuando
mejor se aprecia el aumento de resolucin.
Se les llama 4K porque tienen cuatro veces ms pxeles que los televisores de alta
definicin HD convencionales. Los nuevos
televisores fueron la estrella del CES 2015
(International Consumer Electronics Show,
Feria Internacional de Electrnica de Consumo de Las Vegas). Se ha conseguido revestir
los pxeles para que emitan directamente en
cada uno de los colores, con el resultado de
que la imagen tiene una gama mucho ms
rica y existe mejor contraste entre el blanco
y el negro. A estos pxeles de tres colores
se les conoce genricamente como puntos
cunticos o quantum dot.

Hombres sin mujeres a la difcil tarea de contar historias de prdida
por parte de hombres a los que sus mujeres, reales o idealizadas,
han abandonado, se han ido o han perdido. Los hombres son los que
cuentan cada historia a lo largo de siete relatos, pero en realidad,
son las mujeres las autnticas protagonistas de cada uno de estos
textos que sorprenden tanto por su capacidad para emocionarnos,
como por el siempre inquietante sello fantstico e irreal que impregna la obra de Murakami. Un tema universal, contado desde la mirada personal e intransferible de un autor que jams deja indiferente.

In Men without Women, the most popular Japanese writer of all time
tackles the difficult task of telling the tale of loss by men whose wives either real or idealised - have abandoned them, departed or been lost.
The men narrate each of the seven stories but, in reality, the women
are the true protagonists of each one of the texts that will all surprise
readers with both a great capacity to evoke emotions and the ever-disconcerting fantastic and unreal thread that is always found in the works
by Haruki Murakami. A universal theme told from the personal and
non-transferable perspective of an author who never leaves his readers
indifferent.

The Majorcan novelist Carme Riera has decided to return the power
of speech to the Mermaid from the story by Hans Christian Andersen in her latest book entitled La voz de la Sirena [The Voice of the
Mermaid]. Whereas in the original story, the Mermaid lost her voice
- her tongue - in exchange for becoming a women to fall in love with
the Prince, the time has now come for the character to regain her
power of speech and tell women her true story. These are not times
in which to remain silent, now is the time to tell the story differently
and that is precisely what Carme Riera tries to do in this passionate
reinterpretation.

Looking to our wrists again

UHD television sets, also known as 4K or

ultra-high definition, have arrived - especially
in the larger sizes (55 to 75 inches) as this is
where the increased resolution is most noticeable. They are called 4k because they have
four times more pixels than conventional high
definition television sets. These new screens
were the star at CES 2015 (the International
Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas. It
has been possible to line pixels so they emit
light directly in each one of the colours, with
the result being that the image has a much
richer range and increased contrast between
white and black. These tri-colour pixels are
generically known as quantum dots.

their mobile instead, technology is reversing that situation and forcing us to wear
our mobiles on our wrists. The Apple Watch will be available in ten countries from

Si hay un nombre en el firmamento musical capaz

de despistar de manera impenitente a sus seguidores, es Bob Dylan. Ni a sus 71 aos, el bardo de
Minnesota es capaz de ser previsible. Su ltimo
trabajo, titulado Shadows in the Night, es una coleccin de versiones de temas popularizados nada
menos que por otro gigante de la msica, el crooner
de ojos azules Frank Sinatra. No es el primer artista en principio alejado de este estilo musical

na personalidad compleja que se ha convertido en uno de los diseadores ms

destacados con una obra muy extensa y
difcil de clasificar. Javier Mariscal naci
en Valencia en 1950 y en 1971 se instal
en Barcelona. Comenz con El Rrollo
enmascarado, un colectivo especializado en el cmic underground. En la dcada
de los 80 realiz sus primeros trabajos que muy pronto le
valieron reconocimiento nacional e internacional. Uno de sus
trabajos ms conocidos es la mascota de los Juegos Olmpicos de Barcelona en 1992, Cobi, que revolucion la iconografa de los grandes acontecimientos. Es el prototipo de
artista polidrico que abarca todas las tcnicas y conceptos
visuales. No hay ningn sector en que no exista obra suya,
desde el grafismo al mobiliario o la arquitectura. Incluso la
32 edicin de la Americas Cup (2007) llev su concepto. El
jazz es tambin su inspiracin y la pelcula de animacin Chico y Rita, realizada con Fernando Trueba, fue nominada al
premio Oscar y obtuvo un premio Goya (2011).
El Design Museum de Londres le dedic una retrospectiva en
2009, Drawing Life, y en La Pedrera (Barcelona) tuvo lugar una
exposicin antolgica de sus cuarenta aos de diseo en 2011.
Tiene obras en distintos museos, entre ellos el MOMA. Es Premio Nacional de Diseo (1999). Acaba de exponer en Pars (La
Fte du Graphisme), Londres, Bruselas, Miln, Madrid.
Cmo se hace para estar ms de cuarenta aos en la vanguardia del diseo?
Ni idea. Mi percepcin es que no estoy en la vanguardia, que
no estoy en el diseo. Hago lo que me gusta mucho. Mi percepcin es que hago cosas no muy bien hechas, nunca estoy
contento y siempre quiero cambiarlas. Soy dislxico y an
me cuesta mucho. El diseo es limitacin: te has de adaptar
a un formato. Has de aportar innovacin, pero siempre es
limitado. No se puede hacer lo que te d la gana. Otra cosa
es el arte, la sensibilidad a una serie de experiencias como el
maravilloso creador del pop art David Hockney con sus dibujos y pinturas de Yorkshire que emocionan. El arte que emociona me ayuda a entender mi mundo, a comprender que no
ests solo. En diseo no ocurre lo mismo: hay un problema
que tienes que resolver.
Cmo ha cambiado el diseo en los ltimos aos?
Ms que en el diseo, la gran diferencia es que la sociedad se
ha sofisticado mucho y vivimos
en sociedades con mucha ms
gente: aglomeraciones ciudadanas que no tienen nada que
ver con los aos cuarenta. En
los aos 60 y 70 se empez a
sofisticar la sociedad. Y cada
vez necesitamos ms el diseo grfico. Las empresas en los

one of the most outstanding designers
with an extensive portfolio of work that
cannot easily be pigeonholed. Javier Mariscal was born in Valencia in 1950 and
moved to Barcelona in 1971. He started
out with El Rrollo enmascarado, a group
specialising in underground comics. He
created his first works in the 1980s, which very soon garnered
him both national and international recognition. One of his
most famous creations is the mascot that was used for the
Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 - Cobi, which went on to
revolutionise the iconography used for major events. He is
the prototype multifaceted artist capable of tackling all visual
techniques and concepts. There is nowhere his work cannot
be found; from graphic art to furniture and even architecture.
Even the 32nd Americas Cup (2007) used a concept of his. He
also takes inspiration from jazz music and the animated film
Chico y Rita (directed alongside Fernando Trueba) was nominated for an Oscar and received a Goya (2011).
The Design Museum in London dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him in 2009 entitled Drawing Life and an anthological exhibition was shown at La Pedrera (Barcelona) on his 40
years of design in 2011. His work can be found in various museums, including the MoMA. He is a National Design Award
recipient (1999). He recently exhibited in Paris (La Fte du
Graphisme), London, Brussels, Milan and Madrid.
How have you stayed at the cutting edge of design for over
40 years?
I have no idea. I dont really see myself as being at the cutting edge, or in design for that matter. I do what I love doing. I see myself as a creator of inferior things; Im never
happy and I always want to make changes. Im dyslexic and
thats still a big problem for me. Design is limitation: you
are forced to accept a certain format. You have to be innovative but there are always limits. You cant do whatever
you feel like. Art is something else; art is sensitivity towards
a series of experiences, such as the marvellous creator of
pop art David Hockney, with his moving sketches and paintings of Yorkshire. Moving art helps me to understand my
world, to understand that one is not alone. That is
not the case in design: design just gives you
a problem that you then have to solve.

tener un grafismo y su experiencia personalizada: Winston,
Coca Cola, Marlboro, Camel. Fue muy potente como concepto de comunicacin. El diseo ha evolucionado por la tecnologa: la tecnologa siempre est detrs del diseo. Muchos
carteles recuerdo haberlos hecho a mano y hoy tienes todas
las tecnologas.
Cul es la clave del xito de un diseo? Sabes, cuando terminas un proyecto, si eso va a funcionar o no?
No. Pretendes que funcione. Por ejemplo, ahora estoy comenzando un proyecto que tiene mucho de diseo: convertir una
parte del puerto de Denia de zona de cemento a un oasis con
sombra y vida para que la gente tenga un espacio agradable y
que sea atractivo para la propia gente del pueblo, para que la
gente venga a la experiencia de la Estacin Martima de Balearia. El diseo se ha de realizar a un nivel urbanstico, arquitectnico, interiorista y grfico. Espero que funcione.

How has design changed in recent years?

Rather than design itself, I think the big difference is that society
has become much more sophisticated and we live in societies
with many more people - huge urban agglomerations that would
be unrecognisable to someone from the 1940s. Social sophistication began in the 1960s and 1970s, and we had a growing need
for graphic design. Branding was invented by companies in the
1940s, when every company had to have its own graphic art and
personalised experience: Winston, Coca Cola, Marlboro, Camel,
etc. It was a very powerful communication concept. Design has
evolved through technology: technology is always behind design.
I remember making many posters by hand, whereas technology
has taken over today.
What is the key to success for a design? When you finish a
project, do you know whether it will work or not?
No. You want it to work. For example, I am just starting a
project with a great deal of design involved: converting part
of the Port of Denia from a cement area into an oasis with
life and shade aimed at providing people with somewhere
nice to spend time and an attraction for local inhabitants; so
people come and experience the Estacin Martima de Bale-

Yo soy un dictador de la esttica,

la belleza. Lucho por la belleza,
por un mundo ms bello. Un limpiador de WC como el que yo he
hecho te alegra la vida cada da:
un lirio de color que aade un
punto potico y ayuda a vivir la
vida de manera ms agradable.
Ahora vamos a que todo sea
eficaz y menos esttico. Pero la
esttica es fundamental: somos
animales que hemos venido al
mundo a ser felices y a pasarlo
bien. Y nada ms. Eso es mucho
ms importante que el dinero y la
funcionalidad. La belleza de las
plantas o de la naturaleza, dnde la dejamos? Lo ms importante es el proceso que sigues,
las reflexiones, los problemas y
limitaciones que has de resolver
con una buena solucin, incluso
valorando el impacto ecolgico
de los materiales.

important thing is the process
you follow, your thoughts, the

Efectivamente. Inicialmente se trataba de un dibujo muy

Mariscal, con planos de la ciudad, pero muy pronto me di
cuenta de que era demasiado intelectual. El Banc Sabadell
necesitaba una aproximacin emocional a la gente de cada
ciudad, un diseo grfico de las ciudades que llegara al ama
de casa. Opt por el nombre de la ciudad y as llegas al ciudadano porque se trata de valorizar su propia ciudad.
Has diseado un hotel completo. Cmo es el diseo aplicado a un hotel?
Mi metodologa es la de ama de casa, que son las que mejor
saben. Yo me considero muy ama de casa. Tienen un sentido
comn evidente. Un hotel, qu es? T vas perdido por ah y lo
primero que quieres es que te acojan, que te den besos, que te
cuiden, que haya buenos desayunos... Y que tenga una identidad, para que no te preguntes dnde ests. He viajado prcticamente por todo el mundo y pasa muchsimo eso. El hotel ha de
tener nombres y apellidos. A partir de ah, ya nace el proyecto.

Graphic design with a Mariscal flavour is still trendy; The
new logos for various Spanish cities that you created recently
are a fine example.
Exactly. They initially involved a very Mariscal drawing, with
images of the city, but I very quickly realised that was too intellectual. The Banc Sabadell needed an emotional connection to the people of each city, a graphic design of the cities
capable of connecting with the average housewife. I chose to
use the name of each city, thereby connecting with the people
because the designs value their city.
You have now designed an entire hotel. How is design applied to a hotel?
I adopt the same methodology as housewives do, who always
know best. I see myself as very housewife-esque. They have
obvious common sense. A hotel... what is it exactly? You are
travelling in a strange land and you just want to be welcomed,
embraced, looked after, enjoy a good breakfast... And it should
have its own identity, so no-one need ask themselves where
they are. Ive travelled practically everywhere and that happens an awful lot. The hotel must be clearly identifiable. The
project grows from there.

Estar

uando se disea un viaje se agolpan vertiginosamente una serie de elementos:

el hotel, confortable y acogedor, la seleccin de visitas inslitas, preparar los
contextos de relacin y contacto con el
mbito local, sealar los aspectos exclusivos y una lista voluminosa de deseos
realizables en tiempo y espacio. Pero un
viaje entendido como experiencia ha de atender especialmente a la gastronoma: la comprensin de la cocina autctona as como los sabores y rituales que la convierten
en singular. Es este uno de los puntos fundamentales a
partir del que oriento la eleccin del destino.
Acabo de llegar de Myanmar, una tierra mgica de pagodas, magnficos escenarios naturales y una cultura milenaria. Un viaje a su rico pasado que se inicia en Yangon,
la antigua capital con su esplndida pagoda de oro Shwedagon que domina el horizonte de la ciudad y contina
en Mandalay, residencia del ltimo rey de Birmania que
cautiv al clebre escritor britnico Rudyard Kipling. Un
viaje que no sera posible sin la experiencia gastronmica. En un antiguo monasterio asisto a los rezos de los
monjes budistas para despus tener el privilegio de cenar junto a un grupo de amigos en un ambiente privado, a
la luz de las antorchas. Tambin visitamos sus coloristas
mercados de frutas y verduras para observar las materias primas. El viaje contina despus al lago Inle: en
este idlico paraje natural asistimos a una clase privada
de cocina en una antigua casa de teca edificada en forma
de palafito. Tuvimos la posibilidad de degustar la sabrosa
y variada gastronoma birmana.
En marzo he visitado Camboya y Vietnam. Ambos pases
cuentan con una deliciosa gastronoma y durante el viaje
asistimos a clases de cocina de la mano de prestigiosos
chefs y disfrutamos de exclusivas cenas gourmet en marcos de incomparable belleza y refinamiento. Por ejemplo,
una cena privada a la luz de las antorchas en el templo
Kravan, situado en el interior del complejo de Ta Prohm.
Camboya cuenta con gran variedad de estmulos sensoriales espectaculares: coloristas mercados de frutas y verduras, delicadas artesanas, as como su extica y deliciosa
gastronoma, de influencia china e india. Por otra parte,
preparo un viaje al Japn para 2016 que combinar la tradicin y la modernidad. Tokio es una ciudad que no deja
indiferente y mi visita incluye Tsukiji, el mayor mercado de
pescado del mundo que data del periodo Edo. Estar en
Per en abril, y durante todo el viaje podremos disfrutar
de la deliciosa cocina peruana, variada y de fusin, que vive
ahora un autntico auge gracias al chef Gastn Acurio.
Posteriormente, comparto las experiencias de los viajes y preparo diversas clases de cocina del mundo con
amigos: cocina creativa, cocina mediterrnea, cocina
vietnamita, cocina Tai, cocina japonesa, cocina india, cocina peruana, cocina marroqu. Es decir, se trata de poner en comn la experiencia gastronmica de los viajes.

everal things need to be arranged almost all at once when planning a trip:
the hotel must be comfortable and cosy;
the selection of excursions must be exciting; relationship contexts and contact with the local environment must be
prepared; and exclusive aspects must
be highlighted alongside a long list of
fulfillable wishes in time and space.
However, any trip that is understood as an experience
must also pay special attention to gastronomy: the understanding of local cuisine, as well as the flavours and
rituals that make it unique. This is one of the fundamental aspects around which I select a destination.
I have just returned from Burma - a magical land of
pagodas, magnificent natural surroundings and a thousand-year-old culture. My rich journey into the countrys past began in Yangon - the ancient capital with its
splendid golden Shwedagon Pagoda that dominates the
citys skyline - and continued in Mandalay - the residence of the last King of Burma who captivated the famous British writer Rudyard Kipling. This journey would
be impossible without the accompanying gastronomy
experience. I attend the prayers of Buddhist monks at
an old monastery to then enjoy the privilege of dining by
torchlight with a group of friends in private. We also visited the colourful fruit and vegetable markets to see the
raw materials first-hand. The journey then continued to
Inle Lake. In these idyllic surroundings, we attended a
private cooking class in an old teak house build like a
palafito [stilt house]. We were able to taste the highly
varied and flavourful gastronomy of Burma.
In March, I visited Cambodia and Vietnam. Both countries boast some delicious gastronomy and, on our travels, we attended cooking classes with prestigious chefs
and enjoyed exclusive gourmet dinners in unbeatable surroundings of great beauty and refinement. For example, a
private dinner by torchlight in Kravan Temple, located inside the Ta Prohm complex. Cambodia has a wide variety
of spectacular stimuli for your senses: colourful fruit and
vegetable markets, delicate craftwork, and exotic and delicious gastronomy with Chinese and Indian influences. I
am now preparing a trip to Japan in 2016 that will combine
tradition and modernity. Tokyo is a city that leaves nobody
indifferent and my visit will include Tsukiji, the largest fish
market in the world dating back to the Edo period. I will
be in Peru in April where, throughout our travels, we will
be able to enjoy the delicious, varied and fusion cuisine of
Peru that is now experiencing a genuine boom thanks to
chef Gastn Acurio.
I then share my experiences on these journeys and prepare various world cooking classes with friends: creative
cuisine, Mediterranean cuisine, Vietnamese cuisine, Thai
cuisine, Japanese cuisine, Indian cuisine, Peruvian cuisine and Moroccan cuisine. In other words, I try to share
the gastronomy experiences I enjoy while travelling.

Our 21st Century airports evoke the iconic structures of the grandest
cathedrals. Vast spaces - the largest of their day - with spectacular
atriums showcasing the most cutting-edge technologies and home to
the most avant-garde manifestations of art.

vanguardia arquitectnica. Buenos ejemplos son el
proyecto para Ciudad de Mxico de Norman Foster y
las obras ya realizadas de Madrid y Barcelona (Ricardo Bofill). El arquitecto britnico Richard Rogers, autor
de la terminal T4 del aeropuerto madrileo de Barajas,
fue galardonado con el Premio Pritzker 2007. Los colores, materiales y texturas de los nuevos aeropuertos
son funcionales pero el nfasis en la luz natural y la
escala humana que permite ver el entorno desde su
interior le otorgan una creatividad muy apreciable.
La investigacin constructiva ha llevado incluso a
construir aeropuertos en islas artificiales, por ejemplo
el Aeropuerto Internacional de Kansai Kokusai Kk,
situado en una isla de la baha de Osaka (Japn) con
diseo de Renzo Piano. Por su parte, la aeroisla Chubu
Centrair es un aeropuerto de primera clase y la principal puerta de entrada internacional para la regin japonesa de Chubu y la ciudad de Nagoya.

All the most famous architects
have an airport or two among the
most creative works in their portfolio and the artistic ideas to be
found within their interiors vary
from the avant-garde to the classical, but all of unquestionable cultural value. Some of these airports stand at
the forefront of architectural design. The project by Norman Foster for Mexico City and those already completed
in Madrid and Barcelona (Ricardo Bofill) are fine examples. The British architect Richard Rogers, responsible
for Terminal T4 at Madrid Barajas Airport, was honoured
with the 2007 Pritzker Prize. The colours, materials and
textures of our new airports are functional but the emphasis on natural light and human scale that allows the
surroundings to be seen from their interior is a highly
praiseworthy demonstration of creativity.
Research into new construction techniques means
that airports can now even be built on artificial islands.
This is the case of Kansai Kokusai Kk International
Airport, which is located on an island in Osaka Bay (Japan) and was designed by Renzo Piano. In turn, Chubu
Centrair airport island is a first-class airport and the
main international gateway to the Japanese region of
Chubu and the city of Nagoya.

Por su parte, el nuevo aeropuerto Carrasco
de Montevideo ser, en 2016, el nico totalmente sostenible gracias a paneles fotovoltaicos. DP Ingeniera (ADPI) y la arquitecta
Zaha Hadid (ZHA) han revelado recientemente los diseos para la que ser la terminal de pasajeros de aeropuerto ms grande

Possible projects noticeably include one
by Norman Foster, Fernando Romero and
NACO for Mexico City. It was announced in
September 2014 by the President of Mexico,
Enrique Pea Nieto, and it will be the largest
airport in Latin America, serving 120 million

will set a benchmark in airport architecture.
In turn, the new Carrasco Airport in Montevideo will be the only fully sustainable airport
in 2016 thanks to its photovoltaic panels.

for what will be the passenger terminal at the
largest airport in the world: the new terminal
at Beijing Daxing International Airport, which
is scheduled to open in 2017. It will initially

a multi-modal transport hub offering direct
links to local and national railway services,
including the high-speed trains.

Entre los aeropuertos de significacin arquitectnica est el Chek Lap Kok

(Hong Kong International). Un enorme, espacioso y elegante aeropuerto construido para que coincidiera con la entrega de Hong Kong a la Repblica Popular
de China en 1997, aunque la inauguracin se celebr al ao siguiente. La gran
Terminal 1, diseada por Foster and Partners parece un avin gigante. Tambin
los pequeos aeropuertos se suben al futuro y al arte, como el aerdromo Giovanni Nicelli de Lido di Venezia, decorado por el artista futurista Tato (Guglielmo
Sansoni) y con una vanguardista torre de control.
Lus Vidal es un arquitecto espaol especialista en aeropuertos. Define uno de
sus objetivos como la promocin de la intuicin espacial para los usuarios. Una
tcnica que ha aplicado a Zaragoza.
ARTE EN EL INTERIOR
Ya son cada vez ms numerosas las iniciativas que convierten los aeropuertos en
contenedores de exposiciones vanguardistas y muestras de museos. La enorme
diversidad existente en todo el mundo se puede comprobar en el aeropuerto de
Los Angeles (LAX): manifestaciones artsticas repartidas en las cinco terminales
domsticas y en la terminal internacional. El programa artstico forma parte del
ambicioso plan de expansin y renovacin del aeropuerto.
Una de las instalaciones ms impactantes de LAX es la que lleva el nombre genrico de See Change (Ver el cambio) y que se puede ver en la terminal internacional.

Chek Lap Kok (Hong Kong International) stands among the most architecturally
significant airports in the world. It is an enormous, spacious and elegant airport
built to coincide with the hand-over of Hong Kong to the Peoples Republic of China
in 1997, although the inauguration was celebrate the following year. The large Terminal 1 designed by Foster and Partners looks like a gigantic aeroplane. Smaller
airports are also joining the future and embracing art, such as the Giovanni Nicelli
Venice-Lido Airport that was decorated by the futurist artist Tato (Guglielmo Sansoni) and boasts an avant-garde control tower.
Lus Vidal is a Spanish architect who specialises in airports. He describes one
of his projects as the promotion of spatial intuition for users. He applied this
technique in Zaragoza.

ART ON THE INSIDE

An increasing number of initiatives are converting airports into spaces for modern exhibitions and museum displays. A reflection of the enormous diversity that
exists around the world can be found at Los Angeles Airport (LAX), with artistic
manifestations spread throughout the five domestic terminals and one international terminal. The artistic programme forms part of the ambitious expansion and
renovation plan being carried out at the airport.
One of the most impressive installations at LAX has been given the generic title
of See Change and can be found inside the international terminal. For See Change,
17 artists show moving images on two giant screens hanging from the ceiling in

que rodean el espacio dedicado a restauracin del aeropuerto. En la terminal 6, en el rea de facturacin, se han
instalado siete obras de gran tamao del artista Robbie
Conal, en colaboracin con su esposa, la fotgrafa Deborah Ross, que lleva por ttulo Street Wise (Calle sabia).
Inspirado por la amplia coleccin de fotografas del amanecer de Los ngeles de Ross, Conal ha pintado lechuzas
dentro de las escenas, como si observaran la salida del
sol desde lo alto de la ciudad. En el rea de facturacin de
la terminal 3 la artista Bia Cayotto ha montado una instalacin en vdeo de retratos y paisajes que ofrecen una
visin introspectiva de las vidas de catorce residentes de
Los ngeles, que viven en un tramo de la famosa Ruta 66,
entre Pasadena y Santa Mnica. Cayotto compila y funde
finalmente todas las imgenes en Somewhere Between
Los ngeles (Algn lugar entre Los ngeles), un vdeo
que ofrece una perspectiva intimista de las inseparables
y omnipresentes fuerzas de la cultura, identidad y lugar
por medio de la comida, vestimenta y hbitos de estas
personas. El vdeo se ofrece a travs de dos pantallas que estn ligeramente encaradas, como
si fueran dos pginas de un libro.
En la terminal 3, en el atrio central de
embarque, tambin se puede observar la exposicin Elevate (Elevado) de
Joyce Dallal. Mientras los pasajeros
se acercan a los arcos de seguridad,
pueden ver suspendidos miles de
aviones de papel, como si fuera una
nube de pjaros. Estn hechas a mano
con papel japons en el que hay impresos
extractos de la tercera y cuarta Convencin
de Ginebra (tratamiento de los presos en situacin de Guerra) y de la Declaracin Universal de los Derechos Humanos (1948). La tradicin cultural japonesa
origami, plegado de papel para desear suerte, larga vida
y paz, en exhuberante belleza. En el camino que lleva
al aeropuerto internacional de Los ngeles, y fuera ya
de sus diversas terminales, se pueden ver mltiples pilonas de vivos y brillantes colores de luz, as como las
letras L, A y X de nueve metros de altura que se han convertido en el smbolo del aeropuerto de Los ngeles.
El arte est presente tambin en otros aeropuertos.
Por ejemplo, Embler Art Gallery promueve una seleccin
diversa y excitante de artistas visuales locales, nacionales e internacionales en siete salas VIP de los aeropuertos internacionales JFK, el de Miami y el de So Paulo.
ESPAA
Un pionero del arte en los aeropuertos, para dar la bienvenida a los visitantes, fue Joan Mir. En 1970 don a
Barcelona el mural que, con el ceramista Josep Llorens
Artigas, dise minuciosamente para la actual Terminal
2 del aeropuerto de El Prat. Cermica de intensos colores con detalles improvisados que fascinaban al artista.

the arrivals area and another 25 large screens surrounding the space allocated to catering services at
the airport. Seven large-scale works entitled Street
Wise by Robbie Conal, in collaboration with his wife and
photographer Deborah Ross, have been installed in the
check-in area of terminal 6. Inspired by the wide selection of dawn photographs of Los Angeles by Deborah
Ross, Robbie Conal has painted owls into the scenes
as if they were observing the sunrise from high above
the city. In the check-in area of terminal 3, the artist
Bia Cayotto has created a video installation of portraits
and landscapes that offer an introspective vision of the
lives of 14 Los Angeles residents living on a section of
the famous Route 66 between Pasadena and Santa
Mnica. Bia Cayotto compiles and finally merges all the
images in Somewhere Between Los Angeles, a video
that offers an intimate perspective on the inseparable
and omnipresent forces of culture, identity and place
through the food, clothing and habits of these people.
The video is shown on two screens that are turned
slightly towards each other, as if they were two
pages of a book.
The exhibition entitled Elevate by Joyce
Dallal can be seen in the central boarding atrium of terminal 3. As passengers approach the metal detectors,
thousands of paper aeroplanes can be
seen hanging from the ceiling as if they
were a flock of birds. They are all made
by hand with Japanese paper on which
extracts from the third and fourth Geneva
Conventions (treatment of prisoners of war)
and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
(1948) have been printed. The traditional Japanese culture of origami - paper folding to wish luck, long life and
peace - in exuberant beauty. Along the road leading up
to Los Angeles International Airport and outside its various terminals can be seen numerous brightly-coloured

Art can also be found at other airports. For example,
Embler Art Gallery is promoting a diverse and exciting
selection of local, national and international visual artists in seven VIP lounges at the international airports of
JFK, Miami and So Paulo.
SPAIN
One pioneer of airport art for welcoming visitors was
Joan Mir. In 1970, he donated a mural that he painstakingly designed with the ceramist Josep Llorens Artigas for the current Terminal 2 at El Prat Airport in
Barcelona. Ceramic of intense colours and improvised
details that fascinated the artist.

fotografas (impresin inkjet montada con metacrilato
mate) realizadas en 2008.

Segn indica Francis Briest, presidente de Espace Muses y

Co-presidente de Artcurial, el objetivo del Espace Muses es
ofrecer a los viajeros una muestra de lo mejor del patrimonio de
las instituciones culturalales parisinas. Con la organizacin de
dos exposiciones por ao proponemos a los museos conquistar
el pblico internacional y, a los pasajeros, una muestra
indita. El Espace Muses ha conseguido instalar a Rodin en
el Aeropuerto Paris-Charles de Gaulle. La actual exposicin,
Voyager est un art, (hasta junio 2015) propone un itinenario
por objetos que han sido impresicidibles en cada poca para
preparar un viaje.

This terminal also houses an important display of items
from the AENA Collection of Contemporary Art. The
pieces include two murals by Oswaldo Guayasamn,

The Three Ladies of Barajas, by Manolo Valds, can
be found in the T4 check-in area: three bronze heads
that seem to be talking to each other. A text by Mario

by Ral Belinchn at the new Alicante Airport introduce
us to cutting-edge art. Three photographs (inkjet print
on matt methacrylate) taken in 2008 can be seen in the
new Ifach VIP Lounge.

Co-chairman of Artcurial, the purpose of Espace Muses is to
offer travellers a selection of the best heritage from the cultural
institutions of Paris. By organising two exhibitions per year, we
help museums reach an international audience and passengers
enjoy an unseen exhibition. Espace Muses has brought
Rodin to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. The current exhibition,
entitled Voyager est un art - (until June 2015), suggests
an exploration of objects without which it would have been
unthinkable to travel at various times in history.

concurso de fotografa coincidiendo con el 25 aniversario de la cada del muro. El primer premio (Dario Lagan) muestra la parte superior de tres simblicos edificios de la capital alemana enlazados
a travs de una misma panormica de un cielo moteado de nubes,
mientras que el segundo premio (Mara Len) es un original juego
entre el pasado y el presente de la ciudad con el hilo conductor,
precisamente, del muro.
Meanwhile, the Eurostars Berlin held the first edition of its photography competition to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the fall of
the Berlin Wall. The winner of first prize (Dario Lagan) shows the
top sections of three iconic buildings in the German capital linked
together by a single cloud-speckled sky, while second prize (Mara
Len) went to an original juxtaposition of the past and present of the
city, using the wall as a recurring feature.

Throughout 2015, the roaming photography exhibition entitled Tu

Mirada es Personal is visiting the various establishments run by
Eurostars Hotels. The exhibition shows 14 winning photographs
from the Tu Mirada es Personal photography competition that Eurostars Hotels organises for its guests every year. The three main

Un total de 190 manuscritos se han recibido en la edicin 2015

del Premio Eurostars de Narrativa de Viajes. Este resultado supone la cifra ms alta en las once ediciones del certamen y un
incremento del 25% respecto al ao anterior, en el que tambin
se batieron rcords. De este modo, el galardn literario se consolida como el ms importante en su gnero en Espaa y en todo
el mundo. El premio est organizado conjuntamente con RBA y
la Universidad de Barcelona y otorga 18.000 euros al ganador.
El 54% de las obras recibidas proceden de Espaa, el 40% de
Amrica Latina, y el 6% de otros lugares del mundo. Habitualmente, el ganador se da a conocer en el mes de junio, y Eurostars
edita una edicin gratuita de la obra para todas las habitaciones

Narrative Awards. This is the highest number of entries for any
of the 11 editions of this event and an increase of 25% on last
year, when new records were also set. The literature competition is thus consolidating itself as the most important of its

Veladas de literatura y gastronoma en petit comit. Eso es lo

que propone el nuevo proyecto Eurostars Wine&Books, donde se
combinan a partes desiguales la intervencin de un escritor reconocido, degustacin de vinos, productos gastonmicos locales,
un grupo reducido de participantes y, por supuesto, un hotel. El
primer encuentro de Wine&Books estuvo protagonizado por el escritor Juan Gmez Jurado en el Eurostars Plaza Mayor, en Madrid.
Gmez Jurado es uno de los escritores espaoles contemporneos
con ms ventas en todo el mundo. El segundo encuentro, con la
escritora Begoa Oro, se celebr en el Eurostars Plaza Delicias de
Zaragoza. Ya se estn cocinando nuevas catas en otras ciudades.

Literature and gastronomy evenings for a select few. That is the

idea behind the new Eurostars Wine&Books project, which combines a reading by a recognised author, wine tasting, local gastronomy products, a small group of participants and, of course, a
hotel. The first Wine&Books evening featured the writer Juan Gmez Jurado at the Eurostars Plaza Mayor in Madrid. Juan Gmez
Jurado is one of the top-selling contemporary Spanish writers in
the world. The second evening, with the writer Begoa Oro, took
place at the Eurostars Plaza Delicias in Zaragoza. Further events
are already being planned for other cities.

Eurostars Hotels has launched its Travel Rooms project, involving the production of audio-visual pieces through which we want to communicate our philosophy and character. The first short film, entitled Bonjour Paris, stars the blogger
Alexandra Pereira - author of Lovely Pepa - staying at the Eurostars Panorama.
The film has already been watched thousands of times online.
The focus for this first film approaches travel as an emotional experience. The
second piece, Reach the Top, plays with two main ideas: travel and the search
for success or excellence. The stars of this film are the Eurostars Madrid Tower
and the Spanish actor lex Gonzlez.

realismo con una clara evolucin hacia el
expresionismo figurativo y abstracto, que
domina con pincelada suelta y creatividad.
Algunas de sus obras han sido adquiridas
en Buenos Aires, Nueva York, Iroshima o el
Museo de Arte Contemporneo de Mazatln, en Mxico.

Agustn de Crdoba is a drawer, painter,

photographer and creator. His paintings
are based on realism with a clear evolution
towards figurative and abstract expressionism, where loose strokes and creativity prevail. Some of his works have been
acquired in Buenos Aires, New York, Hiroshima and the Mazatln Museum of Contemporary Art (Mexico).

Eurostars Hotels no ha querido perder la oportunidad de celebrar

la inauguracin de la temporada artstica 2015-2016 coincidiendo
con las principales galeras y museos espaoles. Con ese objetivo
hemos seleccionado a dos artistas destacados del panorama internacional que expondrn su obra este septiembre en hoteles de
Madrid y Barcelona.
Mientras el Museo Reina Sofa muestre al pblico la "Nafea Faa
Ipoipo" de Paul Gauguin la obra ms cara de la historia-, en el Eurostars i-Hotel de Madrid Osvaldo Giuliani inaugurar su personal
homenaje al reino vegetal. Su muestra consistir en una serie de
lienzos en los que habitan fragmentos de madera, ramas o espinas.
Atrado por los materiales vivos, el artista porteo ha desarrollado su
visin del arte en Argentina, Italia, Suiza y Espaa.
En Barcelona el Hotel Eurostars Grand Marina acoger la exposicin
de la artista china Yang Shun (Guangzhou, 1974), que podr visitarse
coincidiendo con el Gallery Weekend durante la primera quincena
de octubre en Barcelona. Iniciada en el hiperrealismo, Yang Shun
viaja entre la figuracin y la abstraccin, plasmando sus recuerdos,
pensamientos y emociones con cada trazo. Se trata de una excelente
oportunidad para descubrir arte vanguardista de primer nivel.

Eurostars Hotels did not want to miss the opportunity to celebrate

the launch of the 2015-2016 art season by working with the main
galleries and museums in Spain. For that reason, we selected two
outstanding artists from the international scene to exhibit their work
this September at hotels in Madrid and Barcelona.
While the Reina Sofa Museum exhibits Nafea Faa Ipoipo by Paul
Gauguin - the most expensive painting ever sold, at the Eurostars
i-Hotel in Madrid Osvaldo Giuliani will inaugurate his own personal
tribute to the plant kingdom. His exhibition will comprise a series of
canvases on which fragments of wood, branches and thorns have
been placed. Attracted by living material, the artist from Buenos
Aires has developed his vision of art in Argentina, Italy, Switzerland
and Spain.
In Barcelona, the Hotel Eurostars Grand Marina will host the exhibition by the Chinese artist Yang Shun (Guangzhou, 1974), which
can be visited as part of the Gallery Weekend in the first fortnight
of October in Barcelona. An initiate of hyper-realism, Yang Shun
travels between figuration and abstraction to convey her memories,
thoughts and emotions with every stroke. This is an excellent opportunity to discover first-rate avant-garde art.

La Makrug y la Oktoberfest

La Ma es la medida y en septiembre-octubre tiene lugar su fiesta. La jarra de cerveza de un litro, tras la adaptacin al sistema
decimal, es la estrella de la Oktoberfest. Inicialmente era de arcilla, con una tapa de estao, y posteriormente evolucion al vidrio
con su volumen grabado en cada una de ellas para evitar fraudes
con la espuma. Para los expertos, la jarra es mejor de arcilla porque mantiene la temperatura y cada Octoberfest crea su jarra
anual para el coleccionismo. Aguantarla un tiempo con el brazo
extendido tiene su competicin, Makrugstemmen. Existen miles
de tipos de jarra, algunas meramente decorativas.
As, el 20 de septiembre de 2015, a las 12h, el alcalde de
Mnich abrir oficialmente la Oktoberfest, la fiesta de la cerveza
conocida mundialmente, tras un desfile por toda la ciudad que
dura dos horas: Baviera tiene una larga tradicin en desfiles con
personas ataviadas de poca. La fiesta cerrar el 4 de octubre
despus de que ms de seis millones de personas hayan visitado
Theresienwiese. La diversin no es solo la cerveza: centenares de
atracciones componen el frentico recinto. Este ao ser notable
el concierto del da 27 de septiembre con cerca de 400 msicos
tocando al aire libre.
La gastronoma local tambin est presente con Hendl (pollo),
Schweinebraten (cerdo asado), Schweinshaxe (brocheta de cerdo),
Steckerlfisch (brocheta de pescado), Wrstl (salchichas), Brezn
(galleta o bollo horneado y retorcido en forma de lazo, con un sabor ligeramente salado), Kndel (guiso caracterstico), Kasspatzn,
Reiberdatschi, Sauerkraut o Rotkohl/Blaukraut (chucrut y col roja),
Obatzda (queso fresco), Weisswurst (salchicha blanca), etc.

The Makrug and Oktoberfest

The Ma is a measurement and is celebrated in September-October.
A one-litre tankard of beer - following adaptation to the decimal system - is the star of Oktoberfest. They were originally made from clay
with a tin lid but subsequently evolved into glass with their volume
engraved on each one in order to avoid foam fraud. For experts,
tankards are best made of clay because they hold their temperature
better and each Oktoberfest creates a different tankard every year
for collectors. There is a competition called Makrugstemmen to see
who can hold one at arms length the longest. There are thousands
of different types of tankard, some of them merely decorative.
The Mayor of Munich will officially open Oktoberfest - the most famous beer festival in the world - at midday on 20 September 2015
after a two-hour procession through the city: Bavaria has a long

tradition of processions with people dressed up in period costume.

The festival will end on 4 October and more than six million people
will have visited Theresienwiese. Beer is not the sole focus: there
are hundreds of other attractions to enjoy on the busy site. This
year, there will be a large concert on 27 September with almost 400
musicians playing on an open-air stage.
Local gastronomy also plays a large part with Hendl (chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Schweinshaxe (pork skewer), Steckerlfisch (fish skewer), Wrstl (sausages), Brezn (baked biscuit or roll
twisted into the shape of a knot with a slightly salty taste), Kndel
(typical stew), Kasspatzn, Reiberdatschi, Sauerkraut and Rotkohl/
Blaukraut (sauerkraut and red cabbage), Obatzda (fresh cheese),
Weisswurst (white sausage), etc.

DESAYUNO BREAKFAST

ALMUERZO LUNCH
ENTRANTE
CREMA DE PATATAS CON CRUJIENTE DE BACON
Los ingredientes incluyen patatas, zanahoria pequea, raz de perejil, cebolla, mantequilla, caldo de verduras, nata, sal, pimienta,
aceite de semilla de calabaza, semillas de calabaza, cebolleta y
cuatro lonchas de bacon.
La elaboracin es la siguiente. Cortar en dados las patatas,
la zanahoria y la raz de perejil. Picar la cebolla. Saltear las
verduras y la cebolla en una cacerola con mantequilla. Aadimos las patatas y las salteamos. Vertimos el caldo y lo dejamos
cocinando a fuego lento unos 15 minutos. Despus aadimos
la nata. Mientras, tostamos las semillas de calabaza en una
sartn seca y posteriormente las picamos. Cortamos la cebolla
tierna con las semillas de calabaza y sazonamos con
sal y pimienta. Fremos el bacon crujiente. Servimos la sopa en plato hondo, espolvoreamos con
las semillas y rociamos con aceite de semilla
de calabaza. Lo servimos con el bacon y un
diente de ajo frito.

En un autntico desayuno bvaro, la cerveza, necesariamente de

trigo, desplaza al caf y le echa de la mesa. Hay que concebir el
Weiwurstfrhstck (desayuno Bvaro) como toda una celebracin. La gran protagonista es la Weiwurst, blanca como dice su
nombre, y elaborada con carne de ternera, de cerdo y especias.
La acompaaremos con mostaza dulce y bretzels. Si usted prefiere mostaza picante o ktchup es, efectivamente, libre de hacerlo,
pero a su alrededor quedar delatado como no-bvaro y sealado
como persona de mal gusto. No es probable que le denuncien.

At an authentic Bavarian breakfast, beer (and it must be wheat

beer) replaces coffee and boots it from the table. The Weiwurstfrhstck (Bavarian breakfast) should be approached like any
major celebration. The main ingredient is the Weiwurst, white
as the name suggests and made from beef, pork and spices. It
can be accompanied by sweet mustard and pretzels. You are, of
course, free to choose spicy mustard or ketchup but, if you do,
you will be seen as a non-Bavarian and someone of poor taste.
That said, no-one will call the cops!

STARTER
CREAM OF POTATO WITH CRUNCHY BACON
The ingredients include potatoes, a small carrot, parsley root, onion, butter, vegetable stock,
cream, salt, pepper, pumpkin seed oil, pumpkin
seeds, chives and four slices of bacon.
This dish is prepared as follows: Dice the potatoes,
carrot and parsley root. Chop the onion. Saut the vegetables and onion in a pan with butter. Add the potatoes and
saut them. Pour in the stock and leave to cook on a slow heat
for about 15 minutes. Then add the cream. Meanwhile, toast the
pumpkin seeds in a dry pan and then chop them. Cut the spring
onion with the pumpkin seeds and season with salt and pepper.
Fry the crunchy bacon. Serve the soup in a bowl, sprinkle with
the seeds and drizzle with pumpkin seed oil. Serve with the bacon and a fried clove of garlic.

PLATO PRINCIPAL
PIERNA DE COCHINILLO CLSICA
CON ALBNDIGAS DE PATATA
Necesitamos cochinillo, cebolla, maicena, cerveza, mantequilla,
un panecillo blanco, patatas, harina, huevo, sal, pimienta, comino molido, nuez moscada.
El primer lugar se marca con un cuchillo ligeramente la piel de la
pierna. Sazonamos con sal, pimienta y comino molido, y horneamos.
Aadimos el caldo y la cerveza. Cortamos la cebolla en julianas y la
dispersamos con el comino alrededor de la pierna. Horneamos durante 90 minutos a 180C, y vamos rociando varias veces con la cerveza.
Horneamos 10 minutos ms a 250C para dejar la corteza crujiente.
Ligamos la salsa con maicena y sazonamos con sal y pimienta.
Acompaaremos la pierna con albndigas de patata y chucrut.
Para las albndigas, cortamos el pan en dados y los fremos hasta
que estn dorados. Hervimos las patatas, las pelamos y las pasamos por un pasapur. Hacemos una masa con patata, harina,
huevo, sal y nuez moscada, y elaboramos las albndigas.
Luego, las ponemos a hervir en agua y las dejamos 20
minutos a fuego lento. Cuando las bolas suben, las
sacamos, escurrimos y servimos.
MAIN DISH
CLASSIC LEG OF SUCKLING PIG
WITH POTATO DUMPLINGS
We need suckling pig, onion, cornflour, beer,
butter, a white roll, potatoes, flour, egg, salt,
pepper, ground cumin, nutmeg.
First, lightly score the skin on the leg of suckling pig. Season with salt, pepper and ground cumin.
Place in the oven. Add the stock and the beer. Cut the
onion into julienne strips and spread around the leg of meat
with the cumin. Roast in the oven for 90 minutes at 180C, while
sprinkling with the beer from time to time. Roast for a further 10
minutes at 250C to create the crispy crackling. Thicken the gravy
with cornflour and season with salt and pepper.
Accompany the leg of meat with potato dumplings and sauerkraut. For the dumplings, dice the bread and fry until golden brown.
Boil the potatoes, peel and pure them. Make a dough with the
potato, flour, egg, salt and nutmeg, and roll into dumplings. Then
boil them in water and leave for 20 minutes over a slow heat. When
the balls rise to the surface, remove, drain and serve.

BAYRISCH CREME
The ingredients are milk, cream, egg yolk, gelatine leaves, sugar
and a vanilla pod. Soak the gelatine in water, scrape the vanilla
and boil with milk. Beat the egg yolks with sugar, add the hot
milk to the mix and cook in a bain-marie. Then combine the
gelatine with the mix, beat with a hand whisk and add the cream.
Leave the mix to set in the fridge for 3 to 4 hours and serve with
raspberry sauce.

con la que dio a conocer el palacio al pblico norteamericano. Ya
en 1870 este establecimiento se llamaba Washington Irving. El
Grupo Hotusa lo ha recuperado para que vuleva a brillar en un
lugar tan preeminente en la ciudad de Granada.

Irving in 1870. The Hotusa Group has returned it to its former

THAT WAS A PARTY

Era una fiesta es el relato ganador de la V edicin del
Concurso de Relatos Breves Eurostars Hotels, mediante
el cual la cadena reta a sus clientes a escribir un texto
de un mximo de mil palabras ambientado en un hotel.
Su autora es la malaguea Mnica Barreal, que se hosped en
el Eurostrars Astoria, y como ganadora se lleva los 3.000 euros
de premio. En esta edicin se recibieron ms de 120 relatos.

bien avenido, nadie hubiera
imaginado que no se conocan de nada. Acababan de
encontrarse en la place du
Clichy, siempre bulliciosa,
y al instante haban reconocido las seales
pactadas: un sobre azul en las manos de ella
y un sombrero color vino en la cabeza de l.
Subieron las escaleras que conducan a la suite
nupcial sin dejar de rerse como dos novios
atolondrados, tratndose con una impostada
familiaridad que disipaba cualquier atisbo de
duda. Al cerrar la puerta las risas cesaron e
inmediatamente procedieron al intercambio de
informacin entre observadores, comnmente
conocidos como espas. Una vez cumplida la
misin, comenz la parte ms incmoda de
aquellas entrevistas, esa en la que solo resta
esperar durante horas a que suene el telfono y
una voz les comunique hora y lugar de recogida.
Ella abri su maleta y extrajo una fotografa
de la Torre Eiffel que fij a la pared mientras

l, un hombre joven, casi un muchacho, corra

las cortinas con nerviosismo. Le pregunt por
qu colgaba esa postal si dentro de unas horas
se iran del hotel.
Me gusta contemplar una imagen de la
ciudad en la que me encuentro aunque solo
sea por una hora. Solo as recuerdo dnde
estoy -contest ella.
Tras observarle detenidamente, la mujer le
pregunt qu edad tena. Veintitrs aos,
respondi l, contrariado. Cada vez me envan
correos ms jvenes -repuso ella con irona. A
este paso van a sospechar de m en los hoteles. A l no le gust ese comentario y se sent,
cabizbajo, en una butaca de cretona roja pero,
pasados unos minutos, la curiosidad volvi a
aguijonearle. Se encontraba frente a la mtica
Yvonne, una de las espas ms reputadas de la
resistencia francesa, la mujer que llevaba aos
filtrando informacin entre fronteras, as que no
pudo evitar preguntarle por su arriesgado devenir.
Ella le confes que en su vida clandestina las horas de tedio superaban a las de vrtigo, aunque
cierto era que en Berln estuvo a punto de morir
en un fuego cruzado. Haba recorrido todas las

capitales europeas pero de ellas nicamente

recordaba habitaciones de hotel, ya que tena
absolutamente prohibido salir a la calle.
Para m Londres fue una suite acristalada -le explic-, una tetera de porcelana azul
y dos tazas blancas con filigrana; Roma, una
habitacin neoclsica, las paredes cubiertas de
escenas mitolgicas; Praga, un cuarto lgubre
con una extensa biblioteca donde descubr a
Kafka. Y ahora Pars.... Sabas que aqu pas
mi infancia?
Yo nunca he salido de aqu -coment l,
sombro. Desde que la ciudad est ocupada
sueo con volar lejos.
Yvonne apart las cortinas para ver la nieve
que, lentamente, asediaba la ciudad. Ante la
fachada del hotel se alzaba una manzana de
casas seoriales coronadas por una ristra de
chimeneas humeantes. Cunto me gustara
salir a pasear por las calles de Pars, pens en
voz alta. Quiso saber cmo era la vida all, si
an pervivan las costumbres disolutas de las
noches de antao. El joven, ms relajado, le
describi una ciudad gris, araada por la necesidad y la violencia de los soldados alemanes.
Sin embargo -aadi- existen algunos reductos
donde los parisinos an nos permitimos brindar
hasta la madrugada. Los ojos brillantes de
Yvonne le instaron a continuar. En la cima de
la colina de Montmartre, junto a los viedos, se
alza una casita rosada que alberga el cabaret Le
lapin agile, un lugar de encuentro de artistas,
jornaleros y gentes de mala reputacin donde

se canta al piano durante toda la noche. Al final

de la velada los artistas eligen a una persona
del pblico para que entone con ellos el ltimo
tema. Es una costumbre que viene de lejos pero
que ahora, con la ciudad tomada, ha cobrado
un tinte ms dramtico. Nunca sabemos si
volveremos a vernos.
Guardaron silencio. Ella se dej caer sobre la
cama, boca arriba. l encendi un cigarrillo preguntndose si su relato la habra incomodado.
Llvame a esa casa -le rog Yvonne incorporndose sobre el colchn.
l dud unos segundos antes de responder
que eso era imposible. No podemos salir de
esta habitacin hasta que nos den la seal,
replic asustado.
No importa. Una noche, solo una noche.
Llevo aos cumpliendo las normas dentro de
este caos y cada vez me siento ms dormida.
Vayamos a cantar hasta el alba a ese cabaret
de Montmartre. Quiz estemos a tiempo de
cambiarlo todo...
El muchacho neg una, dos, tres veces. Ella
insisti esgrimiendo la necesidad de recuperar la
alegra secuestrada, la vida que era aqu y ahora.
Haba perdido a su ltimo amante haca una
semana, deseaba emborracharse y brindar con el
pueblo por el que luchaba. Necesito -le suplicno sentirme invisible por unas horas. Pero el joven no poda aceptar el reto. Valoraba demasiado
su vida como para jugrsela apareciendo con la
mismsima Yvonne en un antro de Montmartre.
Ante sus splicas, cada vez ms desgarradas, le

That was a party is the winning work in the 5th Eurostars

Hotels Short Story Competition, in which the company
challenges guests to write a story of no more than 1,000 words
set in a hotel. The winning author is Mnica Barreal, from
Malaga, who stayed at the Eurostars Astoria. As a winner,
she takes home 3,000 euros in prize money. More than 120
entries were received this year.

describi el modo de llegar hasta la casa rosada,

el cerezo que preceda la entrada, el rostro del
dueo del local. Trat de retenerla en el ltimo
momento pero ella padeca una fiebre extraa
que la impuls escaleras abajo, embozada en
un abrigo oscuro que se fundi con la noche,
salpicado de copos de nieve.
Horas ms tarde, el timbre del telfono le
sorprendi dormido en el silln. Mir a su
alrededor y comprob, desolado, que Yvonne no estaba en el cuarto pese a que el da
despuntaba ya tras el perfil quebrado de las
chimeneas. A las ocho en la estacin Rochereau, pronunci una voz ronca al otro lado
del auricular. El muchacho sinti un vrtigo
fro al observar la postal de la Torre Eiffel, que
desprendi de la pared con delicadeza. Se
asom a la ventana sosteniendo la fotografa
entre las manos. Haba dejado de nevar y un
sol plido lama los tejados de Montmartre.
Seguro que esta noche ella ha entonado la
ltima cancin, pens.

hand-in-hand like a happy
married couple, nobody could
have imagined that they were
complete strangers to one
another. They had just met
in Place du Clichy - always
busy - and had instantly
recognised the agreed signals: her carrying a
blue envelope and he wearing a maroon hat.

Giggling non-stop like a pair of young lovers,

they climbed the stairs to the honeymoon suite
while trying to disguise any shadow of doubt
with faked familiarity. Their laughter stopped
as soon as the door closed behind them
and they immediately began the process of
information exchange between observers; more
commonly known as spies. Mission accomplished, the most uncomfortable part of these
meetings began - simply waiting for hours until
the telephone rang for a voice to tell them the
time and place for extraction.
She opened her suitcase, took out a picture
of the Eiffel Tower and stuck it to the wall
while he, a young man, almost a boy, nervously
closed the curtains. He asked her why she was
putting the picture up when they would be
leaving the hotel in a few hours.
I like to look at an image of the city Im in,
even if its for an hour. Its the only way I can
remember where I am, she replied.
After studying him carefully, the woman
asked his age. 23, he replied, a little annoyed. The messengers they send me keep
getting younger and younger, she replied
sarcastically. If this keeps up, people will
start suspecting something in the hotels, she
added. Her comment upset him and he sat
down in a red cretonne armchair, crestfallen.
However, his curiosity soon got the better of
him. He was with the legendary Yvonne, one of
the most highly regarded spies in the French
resistance; the woman who had been leaking
information across borders for years. So he
was unable to resist asking about her risky

endeavours. She confessed that her clandestine lifestyle consisted of far more tedium
than excitement, although it is true she was
nearly killed by crossfire in Berlin once. She
had visited every European capital but could
only remember hotel rooms because she was
absolutely forbidden to walk the streets.
For me, London was a suite with lots of
glass, she explained, a blue porcelain teapot
and two delicate white cups; Rome was a
neoclassical bedroom with walls covered in
mythological scenes; Prague was a sombre
room with a large library in which I discovered
Kafka. And now Paris... Did you know I spent
my childhood here?
Ive never been anywhere else, he said
melancholically. Ive dreamed of flying far
away ever since the occupation.
Yvonne peaked through the curtains to
see the snow that was slowing blanketing
the city. Opposite the hotel was a block of
stately homes crowned by a string of smoking
chimneys. Oh, how I would love to go out and
stroll through the streets of Paris, she thought
aloud. She wanted to know what life was like
out there, whether the lascivious customs of
the old night-life still survived. The young
man, more relaxed now, described a grey city
stripped by the needs and violence of the German soldiers. Nonetheless, he added, there
are some hidden places where the people of
Paris can still drink until the early hours of the
morning. Yvonnes bright eyes spurred him
on. Atop Montmartre hill, next to the vineyards, there is a little pink house that is home
to the Le Lapin Agile cabaret; a rendezvous
for artists, labourers and persons of ill repute,
where people sing to the piano all night long.
At the end of the evening, the artists choose
one person from the audience to sing the last
song with them. It is a very old custom but one
that now, with the occupation, has taken on a
more dramatic meaning. We never know if we
will see each other again.
They were silent for a while. She let herself fall back onto the bed. He lit a cigarette

and asked whether his story had made her

uncomfortable.
Take me to that house, asked Yvonne as
she sat up on the mattress.
He hesitated a few second before answering
that it would be impossible. We cant leave
this room until they give us the signal, he
said, scared.
So what? One night, just one night. Ive
been following the rules within this chaos for
years and I feel more and more asleep each
day. Lets go and sing until dawn at that cabaret in Montmartre. Maybe we still have time to
change everything....
The young man refused once, twice and three
times. She insisted on her need to recover her
lost happiness, her here and now existence. She
had lost her last lover a week ago, she wanted
to get drunk and drink with the people she was
fighting for. I need, she begged, not to feel
invisible for a few hours. But the young man
was unable to accept the challenge. He valued
her life too much to risk it by turning up with
the great Yvonne at some dump in Montmartre.
As her pleas became more desperate, he described how to find the pink house, the cherry
tree that guards the entrance, the face of the
local owner. He tried to restrain her at the last
moment but she was consumed by a strange fever that drove her downstairs, wrapped in a dark
coat that melted into the night as it became
dotted with snowflakes.
Hours later, the ringing of the telephone
startled him awake in the armchair. He looked
around and, devastated, saw that Yvonne was
not in the room and that daylight was breaking behind the silhouette of the chimneys.
At eight, Rochereau station, announced a
hoarse voice on the other end of the line. The
young man felt a shiver run down his spine as
he saw the picture of the Eiffel Tower, which
he gently took off the wall. He looked out the
window, holding the picture in his hands. It
had stopped snowing and a pale sun warmed
the rooftops of Montmartre. She sang that
last song tonight, for sure, he thought.

el Festival de Venecia, Sofa Coppola eligi el
hotel de los recuerdos infantiles con su padre porque estaba fascinada por su mundo
interior. Coment que cuando reflexionaba
sobre el personaje de Johnny Marco pens:
vive en el Chateau Marmont. El hotel tena que
ser un elemento esencial, el tercer personaje
principal en la pelcula.
Efectivamente, la terraza, pasillos, salones, se convierten en
personajes con el marco de la msica que fue el salto a la fama
de Phoenix y la pareja de Sofa, Thomas Mars. El chofer y el
camarero que aparecen en la pelcula pertenecen a
la plantilla del hotel situado en Sunset Blvd. (West
Hollywood), abierto como residencia en 1929 y
construido a imagen de uno de los castillos del
Loira, el Chteau dAmboise, donde vivi sus
ltimos aos Leonardo da Vinci junto a su
pintura Mona Lisa. No fue hotel hasta 1940.
El edificio es monumento histrico-cultural
de Los ngeles.
Se cuentan miles de historias relacionadas
con el Chateau. Varias generaciones de actores,
directores, escritores y artistas han seguido los
pasos de Dorothy Parker y F. Scott Fitzgerald o Hunter
S. Thompson y Jim Morrison. Marilyn Monroe fue una clebre
husped de la habitacin nmero 29.

o film Somewhere (2010), winner of a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, Sofa
Coppola chose the hotel from her childhood
memories with her father because she was
fascinated by its interior world. She said
that when she reflected on the character of
Johnny Marco, she thought: he lives at Chateau Marmont. The hotel had to play a vital
role, the third main character in the film.
And so it was; the terrace, corridors and halls become characters supported by the soundtrack, which was a leap to fame for
Phoenix and Sofas partner, Thomas Mars. The driver and
the waiter who appear in the film were taken from
the staff of the hotel on Sunset Blvd. (West Hollywood), opened as a residence in 1929 and
built in the image of a castle from the Loire
valley - Chteau dAmboise - where Leonardo da Vinci lived out his last days alongside his painting of the Mona Lisa. It did not
become a hotel until 1940. The building is a
monument of historical and cultural importance in Los Angeles.
Thousands of stories are told about the Chateau. Various generations of actors, directors, writers and artists have followed in the footsteps of Dorothy Parker and F. Scott Fitzgerald or Hunter S. Thompson and
Jim Morrison. Marilyn Monroe was a famous guest of Room 29.
