LA BASURA MARINA
En febrero de 2017, ONU Medio Ambiente lanzó la
campaña Mares Limpios para acelerar la acción
de los gobiernos, la sociedad civil y el sector
privado contra la basura marina, en especial,
contra los plásticos de un solo uso.
Para abril de 2019, 60 gobiernos representaban más
de 60% de la costa del mundo, incluidos nueve
en el Caribe, se habían inscrito en Mares
Limpios. Muchos se han comprometido a
proteger los océanos a través del impulso del
reciclaje y la reducción del consumo de
plásticos de un solo uso, mientras que algunos
han creado reservas marinas y han adoptado
planes de gestión de residuos.

PARA LA ACCION
El Convenio de Cartagena para la Conservación y
Desarrollo del Medio Marino de la Región del
Gran Caribe es el único acuerdo ambiental
jurídicamente vinculante en la región. El
Programa Ambiental del Caribe de ONU
Medio Ambiente alberga la secretaría de este
tratado y apoya la implementación del
Protocolo sobre la prevención, reducción y
control de la contaminación marina por
fuentes y actividades terrestres, y el Plan de
Acción Regional para el Manejo de los
Desechos Marinos. Esto incluye el respaldo a
proyectos nacionales y regionales de basura
marina, así como la promoción de reformas
legales y políticas nacionales.
