A diferencia de las hepatitis B y C, la hepatitis A no causa hepatopatía crónica y rara vez es mortal, pero
puede ocasionar síntomas debilitantes y hepatitis fulminante (insuficiencia hepática aguda) que, a menudo,
es mortal.
El diagnóstico se establece mediante la detección en la sangre de anticuerpos IgM dirigidos específicamente contra
el VHA. Otra prueba utilizada es la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa con retrotranscriptasa (RT-PCR), que detecta
el ARN del VHA
