El sistema de tiempos verbales en ingls Los idiomas presentan a menudo hechos paradojales. En el caso de los tiempos verbales, uno de los detalles ms importantes a tener en cuenta es que aunque el nombre de un tiempo sea "presente", por ejemplo, no garantiza que describa una actividad o hecho presente. La nomenclatura es arbitraria. As vamos a ver que existen 2 tiempos que describen actividades presentes, 6 que describen hechos pasados y 4, situaciones futuras. A continuacin se detalla un resumen breve de los 12 tiempos, con ejemplos y palabras claves relacionadas. TIEMPOS PRESENTES 1. "Simple present" o Presente Simple -un hbito o hecho en tiempo presente. Algo que ocurre siempre, a veces o nunca. Tambin utilizado para verdades cientficas. "He works from nine to five." "On Mondays I do yoga." "I am an engineer." "The earth rotates around the sun." Palabras clave: always, usually, often, sometimes, seldom, rarely, never, every
day, on Sundays, etc. 2. "Present continuous or progressive" o Presente contnuo o progresivo -una actividad en progreso en el tiempo presente. Un hecho que ocurre en el momento en el que se habla o alrededor del momento actual. "I can't talk on the phone. I am eating lunch." "This week my brother is taking the bus to work, because his car is broken." Palabras clave: now, right now, this month, etc. Nota: El Present progresivo y el Presente simple pueden utilizarse tambin con significado futuro, en el caso de actividades planeadas o agendadas. "I am meeting her in the library tomorrow at 10 am." "The plane leaves at 6 p.m." TIEMPOS PASADOS 3. "Simple past" o Pasado simple - Actividad ocurrida en un momento especfico del pasado; hechos ya finalizados. "Yesterday, I ate chicken for dinner." "Janine graduated in 1999." "We got married three months ago." Palabras clave: yesterday, last week, last month, this morning (when meaning is past), etc. 4. "Past continuous or progressive" o Pasado contnuo o progresivo -actividad en progreso en un momento particular del pasado, que sirve como contexto de una segunda actividad ( expresada enpasado simple ). "I was eating when you called." "We were finishing the test when the fire alarm went off." Palabras clave: while, when, at the time. 5. "Present perfect" o Presente perfecto Primer Caso: - hecho o actividad que comenz en el pasado y contina en el presente, por lo general, con mencin del perodo de tiempo. "I have driven this car for five years." "I have been here since 8 a.m." Segundo Caso: - actividad, terminada en el pasado, pero sin mencin del tiempo en que fue realizada. "I have eaten Indian food before." "I have read that book." Palabras clave: already, yet, just, ever, never, __ times, since + a particular time, for + a duration of time 6. "Present perfect continuous" o Presente perfecto contnuo -actividad en progreso antes del momento actual : "I have been studying since 10 a.m."

"Past perfect" o Pasado perfecto -actividad pasada, previa a otra actividad tambin en el pasado : "I had finished when they arrived." "Had you read anything written by Paul Auster before?" Palabras clave: already, before. by the time 8. "Past perfect continuous or progressive" o Pasado perfecto contnuo o progresivo -actividad en progreso antes de otra actividad tambin pasada : "I had been eating for two hours before my friend arrived." "Since last March she had been sending letters and CVs. Fortunately, last week, she got a job." Palabras clave: for, since TIEMPOS FUTUROS 9. "Simple future" o Futuro simple : WILL -hecho o actividad que suceder en el tiempo futuro. WILL : hiptesis y determinacin : "If Sean comes early, we will go to the movies." "I will study English after I finish my work today." "The phone is ringing. I' ll answer it." Palabras clave: tomorrow, next week, next month, etc. BE GOING TO be going to: prediccin cuando hay evidencia o accin futura planificada. "I am going to study from six to nine every day." "Matt and Bianca are going to have a baby girl next month." Palabras clave: tomorrow, next week, next month, etc. 10. "Future continuous or progressive" o Futuro contnuo o progresivo -hecho o actividad que estar en progreso o tendr cierta continuidad en un momento particular del futuro. "She will be studying when we arrive." "I'll be staying with my cousin for several weeks." Palabras clave: for 11. "Future perfect" o Futuro perfecto -actividad o hecho, que estar terminado antes de otro hecho tambin futuro "I will have finished this book by the time you arrive." "When I turn 40 years old, I will have made my first million." Palabras clave: when, by the time 12. "Future perfect continuous or progressive" o Futuro perfecto contnuo o progresivo -actividad en progreso en el futuro antes de otro hecho tambin futuro. "I will have been studying for two hours by the time you come."
