2 de Noviembre de 1958
Written by Orlando Guevara Santiago de Cuba, Nov 2 - On November 2, 1958, the then town of Miranda now Mella, head of the municipality in the province of Santiago de Cuba, was released by Rebel Army forces integrated to the Frank Pas Second Eastern Front led by the then Commander Raul Castro Ruz. It was a bloodless victory, as the garrison's headquarters left the place that day, knowing that it was besieged, surrounded, and recognizing an imminent rebel attack that couldnt have been resisted. When entering the guerrillas in the village, they occupied and burned the barracks, leaving Miranda, home of the sugar mill which today has the name of Julio Antonio Mella, as a free Cuban territory. Since November 1956, in that area existed a strong presence of the July 26 Revolutionary Movement, which developed multiple sabotage and other actions against the Batista dictatorship. The National Action boss of the organization, Frank Pas, together with Pepito Tey, created in that area the July 26 Revolutionary Movement headed by Oscar Lucero Moya, who died in combat . Clandestine cells in this area came to bring together some 300 combatants from which more than a hundred joined the Rebel Army.
