Pasado simple: 'There was, there were'

Estas formas lingüísticas se utilizan para expresar
EXISTENCIA de ALGO/ALGUIEN en ALGÜN LUGAR

Son las formas en pasado de there is / there are.

There was a table in the room Había una mesa en la habitación

There were some chairs in the room Había algunas sillas en la habitación

Al igual que en el presente simple usaremos

'there was' cuando el sustantivo al que acompaña es un sustantivo contable

en singular o uno incontable (ver la diferencia más abajo)

'there were' con los sustantivos contables en plural.

Afirmativo
Hay que tener en cuenta que 'there was' y 'there were' no se puede contraer
en la forma afirmativa.
Se forma con el pasado del verbo 'to be' en singular o plural, según
corresponda
There was a theatre in the town Había un teatro en el pueblo
Sustantivo contable singular
There was some coffee in the cup Había algo de café en la taza
Sustantivo incontable
There were many theatres in the city Había muchos teatros en la ciudad

IMPORTANTE: En español, THERE IS/ARE equivalen al verbo HABER cuando

expresa EXISTENCIA. Lo adecuado es usar la forma singular siempre, aunque
el sustantivo que lo acompaña sea plural

There were many cars in the street: Había muchos autos en la calle

Habían muchos autos – Error!

Negativo
 

El negativo se forma poniendo el pasado del verbo 'to be' en forma

negativa (there was not / there were not).
Es frecuente el uso de la forma contraída (there wasn't / there weren't).

Plural forma contraída There weren’t any No había negocios en

Interrogativo
El interrogativo se forma con el verbo "to be" en pasado (was/were) seguido
de "there".

Estas preguntas suelen responderse con la forma corta:

"Yes, there was/were" o "No, there wasn't/weren't".

son sustantivos que se pueden son sustantivos que no se pueden
contabilizar y que tienen plural y contabilizar, y que solo tienen
singular. Por ejemplo: one apple, two número singular. Por ejemplo: some
oranges. rice, peace.

There were many glasses on the There was not much time
table There was some tea in the cupboard
