Casa Mark Bent
Mark Bent House
85
Mr. Mark Bent May, sitting in the piazza of his house,
shared with us the events that remind him of his
mother Betty May, who in 1921 built this house which
he inherited, as the family tradition says the last
child inherits the house. Mark, as the islanders of his
generation, went away from the island for a few years;
he was in Panama from 1940 to 1955. On his return
to San Andres he bought a car to offer transportation
for the tourists. While enjoying a soft breeze, Mark re-
membered those times when a property was valuable
not only for its physical wooden construction but for
the fruit trees (honey-berry, avocado, almond) that
were planted in its patio. He also mentioned there
was a time in which every plot of land was expected
to have coconut palms and orange trees.
86
“The house was on wooden posts and then
I put it on cement block and I extended the
house, I made it larger.
But the material that we are using now is so
cheap that I regret it, I should have invested
in cement though I love tradition.

Agradecimientos
Gracias a Miss Opal Downs, Miss María Cristina Vargas, y a Miss Amoyin Jay Mitchell,

The relationship of the farthest China with the
traditional houses of San Andres has a metaphorical
meaning. China is a millenary nation, one that withheld
its cultural and ancestral roots, and was present in
the Caribbean through the craftsmanship and a system
of everyday objects, but also the simplicity of its
traditional architecture seems similar to the ingenious
Antillean houses. Their rescue seems more important
than ever before in the effort of holding on to our past,
when the present forces us to forget it. Facing the
universal crisis of the beginning of this 21st. century,
turning around to our true roots is a sign of lucidity
and modesty, based on the sober ethics of survival.
Hence the importance of the houses in San Andres,
simple and severe, that Clara Eugenia shows us in this
book with passion and fervor.
