By default OmniRig is set up for two different short wave stations (Radio 1 and 2) on two different COM ports. The communication of the program with OmniRig is done via DDE invisibly in the background. You do not have to start OmniRig yourself to use it. If you move the mouse cursor over the map, you can read on the title bar the associated grid and the number of QSOs you have made on the selected band. Note: As a result of the Mercator projection the gap between latitudes increases with the distance from the equator. As a result rise the ratio of height to width of the little rectangles with incrasing the distance from the equator. To see this effect have a look at the grid lines on the map. If the grid lines are not visible mark the checkbox "Show grid” You can assign your prefered color of the rectangles, Click on the color button on bottom. right. Page 33 from 35 2020-11-20 JT65-HF HB9HQX-Edition Manual Version 5.6.1 Sequence of messages in JT65 QSOs Like on all modes you have the choice between two options either begin a QSO or answer to a calling station In JT65 and all other JT/FT modes both procedures are very simple. Clicking with the mouse button (e.g. on a row in the receive list or on a button) or pressing the Enter key suffice in most cases. The program can do the job for you. But this is not the goal. Waiting for stations that call CQ or respond to my call is a bit tedious. Therefore | activate the acoustic alert. So it is no longer necessary to sit at the PC and wait until something happens. In this time I can do other things. Calling CQ Click on a free place in the waterfall display to set the transmit frequency Note: An overlapping of JTS signals is not a problem because of the excellent forward error correction and synchronization, Set the appropriate radio button "Even" or "Odd" in the radio group "Transmit Minute" then click on either the button "CQ" or "CQ DX", The transmit of your CQ message (e.g. "CQ DX HBSHOX JN36") starts automatically at the beginning of the next (even or odd) minute. Some times a station is answering immediatley to your first call. But in most cases you must wait. The program sends again your CQ call Until the transmit watchdog stops this procedure. Be patient. Activity in JT65 has slowed down as many stations seek their fortunes in the faster modes FT8 (15 seconds) and FT4 (6 seconds). But with the relaxed JT65 (60 seconds), you'll also be able to do it with less power. Five watts is quite enough. One ore more stations are answering you and sends her standard three-part message consisting of the two callsigns and their grid. Everything unnecessary is left out. The reason is the special compression of the text to a 72 bit binary number. All what you have to do is to click on the desired row in the receive list. The call of the station and her grid are now copied in the logging fields "Station" and "Grid" at the right of the main window. In addition the program reads the signal to noise ratio from the receive list and fill it in the field "Sent". At the same time an appropriate message is generated. The broadcast of this message starts automatically at the beginning of the next minute. Now the QSO is running. If you have checked the checkboxes "Auto QSO" and "Auto Log” you have nothing more to do until the QSO is finished. But this is not the goal Page 34 from 35 2020-11-20 JT65-HF HB9HQX-Edition Manual Version 5.6.1 The next message from your QSO-Partner contains again both calls but in place of the grid the signal to noise ratio for you (the only interesting information). This value is automatically filled in the field "Reva". Now it's time to log the QSO and finish it. You can hit the enter key to send the message "RR73" or click on the button "Free Text" to send a individual message. You may receive the message "73" or an individual text from your QSO-Partner. Tip: Mark the checkbox "Auto Log’. Answering CQ Click on the row with the calling station. The call, the grid and the signal to noise ratio are copied in the appropriated fields on the right side of the main window, Simultaneous the program generates the answer text and send it automatically at the beginning of the next minute. This text contains both calls and your grid. If the station is able to decode your signal it sends a signal to noise report for you. The received value is automatically filled in the field "Revd", Now the QSO is running. Next what you have to do is hit the enter key to generate a "R-dB" message. "R" means “roger” i have received your message and "dB" means the signal to noise ratio for you is e.g. -20dB. Once you receive the message "RR73" (or an individual message) you can log the QSO and send as last message "73" or also an individual message with the button "Free Text’, Tip: Mark the checkbox "Auto Log", Closing words Every user of my program is responsible for his own actions. | do not take any responsibility for any damage caused by the use of my program and | do not guarantee that all functions will work without errors, | would like to thank everyone who supported me during the development. Especially of course to the inventor of the mode Joe Tailor K1JT and to Joe Large W6CQZ the developer of the program JT65-HF. Last but not least | would like to thank all the people who use the program intensively and pass on their experiences. Brig, November 17, 2020 Beat Oehrli HBSHOX Page 36 from 35 2020-11-20
