2x − 11y − 2
Find lim by rewriting the fraction first.
2x − 11y − 4
(x,y)→(2,0)
2x − 11y ≠ 4
2x − 11y − 2
The function is a quotient. Recall the Quotient Rule for limits of functions with two variables. If
2x − 11y − 4
lim f(x,y) = L and lim g(x,y) = M where L and M are real numbers and M ≠ 0, then the limit of the quotient is
(x,y)→ x0 ,y0 (x,y)→ x0 ,y0
the quotient of the limits.
f(x,y) L
lim =
g(x,y) M
(x,y)→ x0 ,y0
Since the denominator 2x − 11y − 4 approaches 0 as (x,y)→(2,0), the Quotient Rule for limits cannot be used to evaluate the
limit of the given quotient. However, multiplying the numerator and the denominator by 2x − 11y + 2 leads to an equivalent
fraction whose limit can be calculated by substitution of x and y values.
Note that the numerator and denominator share a common factor of 2x − 11y − 4. Since 2x − 11y − 4 is nonzero for all(x,y) the
2x − 11y − 2
domain of , it can be canceled to simplify the limit.
2x − 11y − 4
