Veamos las tres gráficas de funciones, las cuales serán, en cierto sentido, el
prototipo de funciones que no poseen la propiedad de continuidad en algún punto
de su dominio.
Definición de continuidad
Definición de continuidad
Continuidad en un punto
Una función f es continua en c si se satisfacen las tres condiciones siguientes:
1. f (c) existe
2. lim f ( x) existe
x →c
3. lim f ( x) = f (c)
x →c
Solución:
1) f(1) = no definido
x si x 1
Considere la función: f ( x) = 2
− x + 3 si x 1
Solución :
Si x = 1
1) f (1) = 2
2) lim+ − x 2 + 3 = −1 + 3 = 2
x →1
lim x = 1
x →1−
lim f ( x) no existe
x →1
Nótese que la función existe en el punto, sin embargo, el límite bilateral no existe.
Solución
1) f(3) = 3+ 6 = 9
lim x + 6 = 9
x → 3+
2) , por tanto lim x→3 f ( x) = 9
lim− x 2 = 9
x →3

3) lim f ( x) = f (3) = 9
x →3
2 x + 3 si x 1
f ( x) =
2 si x = 1
Solución:
1) f(1) = 2
lim 2 x + 3 = 5
x →1+
2) , por tanto lim f ( x) = 5
lim− 2 x + 3 = 5 x →1
x →1
3) lim f ( x) f (1)
x →1
2) lim 1 = −
x →o− x

1) f (2) no existe
lim x + 2 = 4
x → 2+
2) por tanto, lim x→2 f ( x) = 4
lim− x 2 = 4
x→2
3) lim f ( x) f (2)
x →2
CÁLCULO I

x + 2 si x 2
f ( x) = 2
x si x 2
Solución
1) f (2) = 2+2 = 4
lim x + 2 = 4
x → 2+
2) por tanto, lim x→2 f ( x) = 4
lim− x 2 = 4
x→2
3) lim f ( x) = f (2)
x →2
3 − x si x 1
f ( x) =
3 + x si x 1
Solución
1) f(1) = 2
lim 3 − x = 2
x →1+
2)
lim 3 + x = 4
x →1−
Ejemplo 8
c + k = 1
resolviendo el sistema c = -3 y k = 4.
4c + k = −8
x si x 1
Así, f ( x) = − 3 x + 4 si 1 x 4 , es una función continua en todo número.
− 2 x si x 4

cerrado a, b si lo es en el intervalo abierto (a,b) y además se cumplen las dos condiciones:
lim f ( x ) = f ( a )
x→a+
lim f ( x ) = f (b)
x →b −
1 si x = 0
f ( x) = x 2 si 0 x 2
5 si x = 2
c) lim+ f ( x) = 0 f (0) = 1
x →0
c) lim− f ( x) = 4 f (2) = 5
x →2
Ejemplo 2
x 2 − 4 x + 5 si x 3
f ( x) =
5 si x 3
Para x = 0
a) f (0) = 5
b) lim+ x 2 − 4 x + 5 = 0 − 0 + 5 = 5
x →0
c) lim+ f ( x) = 5 = f (0)
x →0
Para x = 3
a) f(3) = 5 existe
b) lim− x 2 − 4 x + 5 = 2
x →3
lim f ( x) = 2 f (3) = 5
x →3−
