Sucre había llevado sus tropas hasta las alturas del volcán Pichincha (Quito). El
24 de mayo los españoles los divisaron y escalaron el volcán para enfrentarlos.
Los batallones patriotas combatieron con bravura, pero sufrieron muchas bajas.
Cuando parecía que sufrirían la derrota, llegaron los hombres del batallón Albión
(ingleses), con municiones y refuerzos. Los patriotas volvieron a la carga y
lograron desbaratar a los enemigos.

The battle of Pichincha took place on May 24, 1822 between the patriot forces commanded by
Antonio Jose de Sucre and the royalist troops led by Melchor Aymerich. The clash occurred in
the foothills of the Pichincha volcano, in Quito, now Ecuador.
The patriot army had 2900 men, most of them from Gran Colombia and Peru. The realists were
3,000 soldiers.
Sucre had taken his troops to the heights of the Pichincha volcano (Quito). On May 24 the
Spaniards spotted them and climbed the volcano to face them. The patriot battalions fought
bravely, but suffered many casualties. When it seemed that it suffered the defeat, the men of
the battalion Albion arrived (English), with ammunitions and reinforcements. The patriots
returned to the charge and managed to disrupt the enemies.
This victory allowed the liberation of Quito and its annexation to the Great Colombia, whose
president was the Liberator Simon Bolivar
