PARTE B
Escriba un ensayo de unas 250 palabras sobre el siguiente tema: MÁX. 6
PUNTOS.

1. Explore the idea of renounce and self-sacrifice expected from women -

for instance implicit in the sentence “don’t feel too bad about giving up” in
Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” - in the literary works studied so far in the
course.

Written by Jamaica Kincaid, this text is based on a several advices, or we must say
rules, that the mother provides to her daughter in order to fit in society or how she must
behave so she won’t be or look like a slut (‘this is how to behave in the presence of men
who don’t know you very well, and this way they won’t recognize immediately the slut
I have warned’). Although there are not explicit references to renounce or self-sacrifice
themselves, the whole idea is in the text. The mother is teaching the girl how to what is
expected from a woman. Throughout the text, it is implied how exhausting is to have
everything perfect and how to please society (‘ this is how you set a table for tea; this is
how you set a table for dinner…’) and how women were expected to follow the rules.
Also, we may see that through the whole narration the voice of the girl is erased, as in
she doesn´t have any option or choice other than following the imposed rules.

On the other hand, her mother gives her other advises that may not be ‘common’ in the
society they were living. As in example, the line ‘don’t feel too bad about giving up’
The mother explains that if the relationship with a man doesn´t work, there might be
many ways to fix it. We may see this is related to sexual relations. If those ways do not
work, the mother explains to her,” that she shouldn’t be afraid to end the relationship.
