COUNT AND NONCOUNT NOUNS

➢ Los sustantivos contables son aquellos que se pueden contar y tienen plural.
An apple, two apples ...

➢ Los sustantivos no contables, o incontables, son aquellos que no se pueden contar y, por lo
tanto, no tienen plural. En este grupo incluimos generalmente todas las sustancias, materias y
cualidades abstractas.
Milk, sugar, money, wood, gold, happiness, poverty

Sin embargo, algunos sustantivos pueden ser contables o incontables dependiendo


de la función que desempeñan.

She bought two cakes (contable)Ella compró dos tortas (indica las piezas).

You're eating some cake (incontable) Estás comiendo torta (indica la sustancia).

I'm frying an egg (contable). Estoy friendo un huevo.

There's some egg on your t-shirt (incontable) Hay huevo en tu camiseta (sustancia).

Some / Any

➢ Para referirse a sustantivos incontables directamente, se usan las palabras some y any.
➢ Como norma general, SOME se aplica en las oraciones afirmativas, mientras que ANY
se usa en las oraciones interrogativas y negativas.

¿Hay azúcar?

Yes, there is some sugar. No, there isn't any sugar

Sí, hay algo de azúcar. No, no hay nada de azúcar.


EXCEPCION: Se usa SOME en preguntas cuando se está ofreciendo o pidiendo
alguna cosa:

Would you like some sugar in your tea?


¿Desearías azúcar en tu té?

Could I have some water, please?


¿Podría traerme agua, por favor?

Estas palabras también pueden usarse con sustantivos contables...
